Schools Shouldn't Ban Access to ChatGPT
When the artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT was released in late November, I was one of many educators who jumped on it, introducing it in the seminar I teach at Yale on the media and democracy. With its ability to communicate in plain-English prose, it was undeniably fun for the students to play with, composing everything from silly poems to job application letters. But it was also deeply troubling. When I prompted it to spread misinformation, it generated a news article falsely asserting the "U.S. Electoral Commission" had found "rampant voter fraud" in the 2020 election. It was also alarmingly quick to complete the term paper assignment that my students had been working on for weeks.
Proposal for EU Artificial Intelligence Act Passes Next Level โ Where Do We Stand and What's Next?
Following multiple amendments and discussions, the EU Member States โ the Council of the EU โ approved a compromise version of the proposed Artificial Intelligence Regulation (AI Act) on December 6, 2022. Once adopted, the AI Act will be the first horizontal legislation in the EU to regulate AI systems, introducing rules for the safe and trustworthy placing on the EU market of products with an AI component. The Regulation's extraterritorial scope (i.e., application to providers and users outside the EU when the output produced by the system is used in the EU) and its exceptionally high fines of the higher of up to โฌ30 million or up to 6 % of the company's total worldwide annual turnover for the preceding financial year, are expected to shape the regulatory requirements outside of the EU borders as has been the case with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The first proposal for an AI Act was published by the European Commission (Commission) in April 2021. The current version of the AI Act will next have to be adopted by the European Parliament (Parliament).

An apparent cyberattack on Iowa's largest school district has led officials to cancel classes for 30,000 students for a second day as technicians scramble to protect data and restore the computer system, the district's leader said Tuesday afternoon. The Des Moines school district's interim superintendent, Matt Smith, said officials received an alert Monday about a possible "cybersecurity event" that led them to cancel classes Tuesday and then to keep schools closed Wednesday. On Tuesday night, the district announced that school would reopen Thursday.
UK launches new AI Standards Hub for the development of AI best practices
In January 2022, DLA Piper reported on an announcement of a new initiative, as part of the UK's National AI Strategy, to shape the way organisations and regulators develop technical standards for artificial intelligence ("AI"). The initiative, the AI Standards Hub ("Hub"), was highlighted as a collaborative effort between the Alan Turing Institute, the British Standards Institution, and the National Physical Laboratory, in partnership with the UK Government, to lead the way in developing standards that could be used across all sectors and jurisdictions. On 12 October, in their latest update, the Alan Turing Institute announced that the hard work of the collaborators was finally complete and that the Hub was ready for interaction. While still early in its use, the Hub already contains an array of resources that will allow its users to understand and help shape the role of standards in the development of AI and best practices. The primary goal of the Hub is to advance trustworthy and responsible AI through a focus on standards that can be used as part of governance and innovation tools and mechanisms.

A dystopian future for cybersecurity is presented by all good apocalyptic sci-fi films and books. Beyond the inclusion of open AI in many vendor slide decks in a way of positioning next-generation technology and a more automated, advanced, approach to technology, the concept is now becoming more mainstream. This advancement from a glorified Google search has sparked the interest of students seeking to expedite essay responses without consuming the time or need to read source materials, followed by teachers seeking to similarly automate marking. Anyone who has been frustrated by a website chatbot while attempting to get help or an answer to a vaguely complex question found solace in conversing with a computer. Without a doubt, it's opened up a world of possibilities for AI to influence how we interact with technology daily as individuals, rather than just being a mysterious black box powering systems ranging from weather forecasting to space rockets. Inevitably, the potential impact on cyber security will quickly become a key topic of discussion on both sides.
What the UK's six AI principles mean for financial services
The regulatory framework is to be built around six cross-sector principles that the UK government outlined in July and focus on'high risk' AI โ in an approach to regulating AI that varies significantly to that proposed in the EU with the planned AI Act. Formal regulatory guidance is likely to be issued in the UK to guide firms' approach to using AI in due course, but we have assessed each of the six principles against the views expressed by regulators via the AI Public Private Forum (AIPPF) โ a forum set up by the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) โ in an effort to understand what is likely to be expected of firms. Undertaking an AI audit and assessing how AI use aligns with business objectives are just two of the measures that firms should consider to best prepare themselves for the new regulatory regime. A common theme across both the EU and UK proposals is ensuring the safe use of AI. Detailed UK guidance on risk categorisation is limited at this stage, but financial services firms would be wise to undertake an audit of their AI use and create an inventory of all AI applications that are in use or development.

And just as space travel ambitions have spread to other countries, a number of international authors have emerged among science fiction's elite. For example, Chinese novelist Liu Cixin's "The Three-Body Problem" has sold more than 8 million copies, is being adapted into a Netflix series and drew President Barack Obama's praise after he read it during his time in the White House. "The scope of it was immense," Obama said in 2017.
New voices in AI: machine learning insights on Earth's nightlights with Srija Chakraborty
Welcome to episode 10 of New voices in AI. This time we hear from Srija Chakraborty about her work using ML with large data sets to understand what happens on Earth at night. I am a researcher at the Earth from Space Institute, Universities Space Research Association, working on applied machine learning techniques for remote sensing datasets with the Black Marble Science team. Before this, I completed my doctoral studies at Arizona State University studying machine learning and statistical signal processing approaches for remote sensing applications and then held a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellowship at Goddard Space Flight Center, working on machine learning techniques for nighttime remote sensing. I currently work with the Black Marble dataset, which captures the Earth at night from space with the VIIRS instrument (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) onboard the Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 satellites.
ChatGPT gets a new update to improve accuracy of AI chatbot
It should be generally better across a wide range of topics and has improved factuality. The first point could pertain to ChatGPT's potential to spread misinformation. While the chatbot does have built-in functions to help it avoid offensive responses and factual errors, it's still far from perfect. OpenAI has also admitted that ChatGPT is susceptible to providing "plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers." Perhaps, with this update, the chatbot has grown a tad smarter at handling these things. Meanwhile, the second point looks like it refers to the ability to stop ChatGPT while it's generating a response, although we were unable to see anything related to it on our end.
