Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have successfully demonstrated that autonomous methods can discover new materials. The artificial intelligence (AI)-driven technique led to the discovery of three new nanostructures, including a first-of-its-kind nanoscale "ladder." The research was published today in Science Advances.. The newly discovered structures were formed by a process called self-assembly, in which a material's molecules organize themselves into unique patterns. Scientists at Brookhaven's Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) are experts at directing the self-assembly process, creating templates for materials to form desirable arrangements for applications in microelectronics, catalysis, and more.


The Role of Heuristics and Biases During Complex Choices with an AI Teammate

Behavioral scientists have classically documented aversion to algorithmic decision aids, from simple linear models to AI. Sentiment, however, is changing and possibly accelerating AI helper usage. AI assistance is, arguably, most valuable when humans must make complex choices. We argue that classic experimental methods used to study heuristics and biases are insufficient for studying complex choices made with AI helpers. We adapted an experimental paradigm designed for studying complex choices in such contexts. We show that framing and anchoring effects impact how people work with an AI helper and are predictive of choice outcomes. The evidence suggests that some participants, particularly those in a loss frame, put too much faith in the AI helper and experienced worse choice outcomes by doing so. The paradigm also generates computational modeling-friendly data allowing future studies of human-AI decision making.


Enabling Astronaut Self-Scheduling using a Robust Advanced Modelling and Scheduling system: an assessment during a Mars analogue mission

Human long duration exploration missions (LDEMs) raise a number of technological challenges. This paper addresses the question of the crew autonomy: as the distances increase, the communication delays and constraints tend to prevent the astronauts from being monitored and supported by a real time ground control. Eventually, future planetary missions will necessarily require a form of astronaut self-scheduling. We study the usage of a computer decision-support tool by a crew of analog astronauts, during a Mars simulation mission conducted at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS, Mars Society) in Utah. The proposed tool, called Romie, belongs to the new category of Robust Advanced Modelling and Scheduling (RAMS) systems. It allows the crew members (i) to visually model their scientific objectives and constraints, (ii) to compute near-optimal operational schedules while taking uncertainty into account, (iii) to monitor the execution of past and current activities, and (iv) to modify scientific objectives/constraints w.r.t. unforeseen events and opportunistic science. In this study, we empirically measure how the astronauts, who are novice planners, perform at using such a tool when self-scheduling under the realistic assumptions of a simulated Martian planetary habitat.

Better Phishing, Easy Malicious Implants: How AI Could Change Cyberattacks

Artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) models have already shown some promise in increasing the sophistication of phishing lures, creating synthetic profiles, and creating rudimentary malware, but even more innovative applications of cyberattacks will likely come in the near future. Malware developers have already started toying with code generation using AI, with security researchers demonstrating that a full attack chain could be created. The Check Point Research team, for example, used current AI tools to create a complete attack campaign, starting with a phishing email generated by OpenAI's ChatGPT that urges a victim to open an Excel document. The researchers then used the Codex AI programming assistant to create an Excel macro that executes code downloaded from a URL and a Python script to infect the targeted system. Each step required multiple iterations to produce acceptable code, but the eventual attack chain worked, says Sergey Shykevich, threat intelligence group manager at Check Point Research.
