Autonomous Rendezvous with Non-cooperative Target Objects with Swarm Chasers and Observers

Space debris is on the rise due to the increasing demand for spacecraft for com-munication, navigation, and other applications. The Space Surveillance Network (SSN) tracks over 27,000 large pieces of debris and estimates the number of small, un-trackable fragments at over 1,00,000. To control the growth of debris, the for-mation of further debris must be reduced. Some solutions include deorbiting larger non-cooperative resident space objects (RSOs) or servicing satellites in or-bit. Both require rendezvous with RSOs, and the scale of the problem calls for autonomous missions. This paper introduces the Multipurpose Autonomous Ren-dezvous Vision-Integrated Navigation system (MARVIN) developed and tested at the ORION Facility at Florida Institution of Technology. MARVIN consists of two sub-systems: a machine vision-aided navigation system and an artificial po-tential field (APF) guidance algorithm which work together to command a swarm of chasers to safely rendezvous with the RSO. We present the MARVIN architec-ture and hardware-in-the-loop experiments demonstrating autonomous, collabo-rative swarm satellite operations successfully guiding three drones to rendezvous with a physical mockup of a non-cooperative satellite in motion.


Agent-based Simulation of District-based Elections

In district-based elections, electors cast votes in their respective districts. In each district, the party with maximum votes wins the corresponding seat in the governing body. The election result is based on the number of seats won by different parties. In this system, locations of electors across the districts may severely affect the election result even if the total number of votes obtained by different parties remains unchanged. A less popular party may end up winning more seats if their supporters are suitably distributed spatially. This happens due to various regional and social influences on individual voters which modulate their voting choice. In this paper, we explore agent-based models for district-based elections, where we consider each elector as an agent, and try to represent their social and geographical attributes and political inclinations using probability distributions. This model can be used to simulate election results by Monte Carlo sampling. The models allow us to explore the full space of possible outcomes of an electoral setting, though they can also be calibrated to actual election results for suitable values of parameters. We use Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) framework to estimate model parameters. We show that our model can reproduce the results of elections held in India and USA, and can also produce counterfactual scenarios.

NS-HGlio: A generalizable and repeatable HGG segmentation and volumetric measurement AI algorithm for the longitudinal MRI assessment to inform RANO in trials and clinics

Accurate and repeatable measurement of high-grade glioma (HGG) enhancing (Enh.) and T2/FLAIR hyperintensity/edema (Ed.) is required for monitoring treatment response. We aim to develop an HGG volumetric measurement and visualization AI algorithm that is generalizable and repeatable. A single 3D-Convoluted Neural Network, NS-HGlio, to analyze HGG on MRIs using 5-fold cross validation was developed using retrospective (557 MRIs), multicentre (38 sites) and multivendor (32 scanners) dataset divided into training (70%), validation (20%), and testing (10%). Six neuroradiologists created the ground truth (GT). Ed. (WholeLesion/WL) tumor tissue and repeatability testing on 14 subjects from the TCIA MGH-QIN-GBM dataset using volume correlations between timepoints were performed. NS-HGlio is accurate, repeatable, and generalizable.

The 22nd annual list features critical technological advances predicted to change how we live and work fundamentally. MIT Technology Review, owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, compiled the list of companies or institutions set to develop breakthroughs and when the public can expect these innovations. Mat Honan, editor-in-chief of MIT Technology Review, said: 'Our breakthrough technologies lists are fascinating snapshots of the evolution of big tech innovation breakthroughs.

Artificial intelligence had a huge moment in 2022. The chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, gained notoriety for its ability to engage in seemingly human-like conversations, sparking curiosity and serious conversations about where this technology is headed. Applications in national security and space are poised to benefit from this new age of AI, says technologist Patrick Biltgen, principal at the defense and intelligence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. He says the industry is just beginning to grasp the potential of so-called generative AI, with tools like ChatGPT that create coherent and convincing written content and models like DALL-E 2 that come up with realistic images from a description in natural language. Defense and aerospace organizations have long sought AI for its ability to automate tasks, shorten decision cycles and bring autonomy into systems.


Public Programs Are Only as Good as Their Data

Data scientists will have a bumper year in 2023 as governments invest heavily in applying AI and algorithms to public policy. The European Commission has committed €1.3 billion ($1.38 billion) to research and innovation under the Digital Europe Programme. The UK government is funding £117 million ($143.6 million) for PhDs in AI, and it's already on the second year of its 10-year plan to "make Britain a global AI superpower." Examples of ongoing initiatives include the National Health Service's use of AI to identify abnormalities in CT scans and the Department for Work and Pensions' efforts to detect fraud in universal credit applications. Animal testing has long been necessary for a drug to gain approval by the US Food and Drug Administration--but it may be on its way out. A new law seeks to replace some lab animal use with high-tech alternatives. The FDA Modernization Act 2.0, signed by President Biden at the end of December with widespread bipartisan support, ends a 1938 federal mandate that experimental drugs must be tested on animals before they are used in human clinical trials. While the law doesn't ban animal testing, it allows drugmakers to use other methods, such as microfluidic chips and miniature tissue models, which use human cells to mimic certain organ functions and structures.


'Historical Figures' AI Chat Bot Generates Lies From Dead People – Rolling Stone

The latest artificial intelligence tool to sweep social media is "Historical Figures Chat," a novelty that currently sits at the #34 spot in the "Education" section of Apple's app store. "With this app, you can chat with deceased individuals who have made a significant impact on history from ancient rulers and philosophers, to modern day politicians and artists," the description claims. What it doesn't mention is just how off the mark some of the algorithmic responses can be. The internet being what it is, users have downloaded Historical Figures -- which was first made available some two weeks ago -- and embarked on conversations with unsavory characters including Charles Manson, Jeffrey Epstein, and various high-ranking Nazis. These are just a few of the 20,000 significant personalities available for interview, and they seem especially keen on expressing remorse for the horrible things they did while alive, while whitewashing their own documented views.
