SUPER-MAN: SUPERnumerary Robotic Bodies for Physical Assistance in HuMAN-Robot Conjoined Actions

This paper presents a mobile supernumerary robotic approach to physical assistance in human-robot conjoined actions. The study starts with a description of the SUPER-MAN concept. The idea is to develop and utilize mobile collaborative systems that can follow human loco-manipulation commands to perform industrial tasks through three main components: i) an admittance-type interface, ii) a human-robot interaction controller, and iii) a supernumerary robotic body. Next, we present two possible implementations within the framework from theoretical and hardware perspectives. The first system is called MOCA-MAN and comprises a redundant torque-controlled robotic arm and an omnidirectional mobile platform. The second one is called Kairos-MAN, formed by a high-payload 6-DoF velocity-controlled robotic arm and an omnidirectional mobile platform. The systems share the same admittance interface, through which user wrenches are translated to loco-manipulation commands generated by whole-body controllers of each system. Besides, a thorough user study with multiple and cross-gender subjects is presented to reveal the quantitative performance of the two systems in effort-demanding and dexterous tasks. Moreover, we provide qualitative results from the NASA-TLX questionnaire to demonstrate the SUPER-MAN approach's potential and its acceptability from the users' viewpoint.

Six with ties to MIT honored as 2022 ACM Fellows
On Jan. 18, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) announced its 2022 fellows, those it recognizes "for significant contributions in areas including cybersecurity, human-computer interaction, mobile computing, and recommender systems among many other areas." Included in the crop of new fellows were six distinguished scientists with ties to MIT. Constantinos Daskalakis, the Armen Avanessians (1982) Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), was honored "for contributions to the foundations of algorithmic game theory, mechanism design, sublinear algorithms, and theoretical machine learning." Daskalakis is a theoretical computer scientist who works at the interface of game theory, economics, probability theory, statistics, and machine learning. His current work focuses on multi-agent learning, learning from biased and dependent data, causal inference and econometrics.
San Francisco asks state regulators to slow driverless taxi rollout
There's no easy fix to America's supply chain problem, but a major issue is a lack of drivers. Now a new type of scanner called 4-D LiDar offers a possible solution, which could be a huge step forward for self-driving cars and trucks. San Francisco authorities penned letters to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) asking to slow the expansion of Cruise and Waymo robotaxi services, citing safety concerns. Officials said that although they hope emerging driving automation technology will contribute to improving street safety and enhance equitable and accessible mobility, the expansion of either service "is unreasonable," following recent incidents during which the autonomous vehicles blocked traffic and intruded into active emergency response scenes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into Cruise last December.

Tesla Inc. confirmed the U.S. Justice Department has asked for documents related to the electric-car maker's advanced driver-assistance system after opening a criminal investigation. The Austin, Texas-based company, in a regulatory filing released Tuesday, said the DOJ asked for information about Tesla's Autopilot system, which helps drivers with tasks such as steering and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles on the highway.

Baidu, China's top search engine provider and robotaxi developer, is apparently working on its own counterpart to ChatGPT. The news, first reported by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, sent Baidu's stock price rising on Monday to reach its highest point since September. A spokesperson for Baidu declined to comment on the reports. But it wouldn't be surprising that Baidu, which bills itself as the pioneer in China's artificial intelligence field, is stepping up to build the Chinese equivalent of today's most powerful chatbot. The question is how big a difference the tool can make, and where its limitations lie.

AI: World likely to hit key warming threshold in 10-12 years
The world will likely breach the internationally agreed-upon climate change threshold in about a decade, and keep heating to break through a next warming limit around mid-century even with big pollution cuts, artificial intelligence predicts in a new study that's more pessimistic than previous modeling. The study in Monday's journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reignites a debate on whether it's still possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as called for in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, to minimize the most damaging effects of climate change. The world has already warmed 1.1 or 1.2 degrees since pre-industrial times, or the mid-19th century, scientists say. Two climate scientists using machine learning calculated that Earth will surpass the 1.5 degree (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) mark between 2033 and 2035. Their results fit with other, more conventional methods of predicting when Earth will break the mark, though with a bit more precision.
