GPT-4 and the Next Frontier of Generative AI – Towards AI

#artificialintelligence

Originally published on Towards AI. This is a follow-up to my part 1 on ChatGPT. GPT-4 has burst onto the scene! Open AI officially released the larger and more powerful successor to GPT-3 with many improvements, including the ability to process images, draft a lawsuit, and handle up to a 25,000-word input.¹ During testing, Open AI reported that it was smart enough to find a solution for solving a CAPTCHA by hiring a human on taskrabbit to do it for GPT-4.²

Why Elon Musk is wrong about pausing AI development - CapX

#artificialintelligence

Panic about new technologies is nothing new, and artificial intelligence is no exception. This week more than 1,800 people have signed an open letter calling for at least a six-month pause on training AI systems that are'more powerful than GPT-4′ – the latest chatbot released by Open AI. The signatories – who include the likes of Elon Musk, Andrew Yang and Steve Wozniak – want governments to impose a moratorium if AI labs don't stop their research voluntarily. Meanwhile here in the UK, the Government recently released its own AI regulation strategy. The letter cites a number of concerns about AI: 1) disseminating dis/misinformation 2) ushering in a period of widespread unemployment, and 3) the creation of nefarious robot overlords.

'Vulkan' Leak Offers a Peek at Russia's Cyberwar Playbook

WIRED

Did you hear that Donald Trump got indicted this week? The first-ever indictment of a former US president had been looming for weeks. And now that it's happened, the move by a Manhattan grand jury is deepening fissures in America's already-fraught political divide. But while Trump headlines flood your feeds, there were plenty of other big stories this week, none of which have anything to do with any of that. In Germany, police are cracking down on people who post adult content to websites and platforms that lack age-verification checks, like Twitter.

Musk, scientists call for halt to AI race sparked by ChatGPT

#artificialintelligence

Are tech companies moving too fast in rolling out powerful artificial intelligence technology that could one day outsmart humans? That's the conclusion of a group of prominent computer scientists and other tech industry notables such as Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak who are calling for a 6-month pause to consider the risks. Their petition published Wednesday is a response to San Francisco startup OpenAI's recent release of GPT-4, a more advanced successor to its widely-used AI chatbot ChatGPT that helped spark a race among tech giants Microsoft and Google to unveil similar applications. The letter warns that AI systems with "human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity" -- from flooding the internet with disinformation and automating away jobs to more catastrophic future risks out of the realms of science fiction. It says "recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control."

ChatGPT bans in Italy over Unlawfully Collecting User Data - CinexTech

#artificialintelligence

ChatGPT bans: The Italian Data Protection Authority also says that OpenAI could be fined if it doesn't make ChatGPT follow privacy laws in Italy. OpenAI says that it has stopped giving ChatGPT to users in Italy because that country is looking into the program. But the CEO of the company, Sam Altman, tweeted, "Though we think we follow all privacy laws." We of course defer to the Italian government and have ceased offering ChatGPT in Italy (though we think we are following all privacy laws). Italy is one of my favorite countries and I look forward to visiting again soon!

Iran Issues Fatwa Against AI

#artificialintelligence

In an extraordinary move, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has issued a fatwa against Artificial Intelligence, calling it "satanic." Anyone using the quickly developing technology would be punished by hanging, Iranian officials said. I am informing all virtuous Muslims of the world that a new satanic technology aims to replace the creation of Allah the almighty. I call on all Muslims wherever they may be in the world to refrain from and fight against all forms of artificial intellegence as they insult the sacred beliefs of Muslims henceforth. Whoever is killed in this cause will be a martyr, God willing.

DoD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office Launches Hack the Pentagon Website > U.S. Department of Defense > Release

#artificialintelligence

The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) Directorate for Digital Services (DDS) has launched a website (www.hackthepentagon.mil) to accompany their long-running program: Hack the Pentagon (HtP). DDS launched HtP in 2016, using bug bounties as an innovative way to secure critical Department of Defense (DoD) systems and assets. HtP invites vetted, independent security researchers, known as "ethical hackers", to discover, investigate, and report vulnerabilities, which DoD can then remediate. DDS built the HtP website as a resource for Department of Defense organizations, vendors, and security researchers to learn how to conduct a bug bounty, partner with the CDAO DDS team to support bug bounties, and participate in DoD-wide bug bounties. "With the HtP website launch, CDAO is scaling a long running program, which historically offered services on a project-by-project basis, by offering the Department better access to lessons learned and best practices for hosting bug bounties," said Dr. Craig Martell, Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer.

Elon Musk's warnings about AI research followed months-long battle against 'woke' AI

FOX News

Unanimous AI's chief scientist and CEO Louis Rosenberg and Center for AI and Digital Policy founder Marc Rotenberg explain why they signed an open letter with Elon Musk calling for a pause of artificial intelligence developments. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been waging a battle for the last several months over what he called "woke" artificial intelligence, a fight that appears to have factored into his call for a six-month pause in the development of next generation AI systems. Musk was one of several signatories to a letter this week that warned of advanced AI technology that could pose "profound risks to society and humanity." The letter said one of those risks is that AI might be used to "flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth." The letter was signed by several notable technology experts, and it's not clear who might have pushed for the inclusion of that specific phrase.
