Can a Laplace PDE Define Air Corridors through Low-Altitude Airspace?

This paper develops a high-density air corridor traffic flow model for Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) operation in urban low altitude airspace. To maximize throughput with safe separation guarantees, we define an airspace spatiotemporal planning problem. For the spatial planning, we propose a multi-floor UAS coordination structure divided into a finite number of air corridors safely wrapping buildings and obstacles. We use the USGS Lidar data to map buildings and in turn generate air corridors by modeling UAS coordination as ideal fluid flow with the streamlines obtained by solving the Laplace partial differential equation (PDE). Proper boundary conditions for the differential equations are imposed to direct air corridors along the floors desired motion direction. For temporal planning, we use 4-dimensional path-finding through the corridor network with A* search to maximize airspace usability given each UAS initial and destination waypoint pair.

A new draft guidance by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would allow developers of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) digital health solutions to make changes to their products without submitting a new application. The plan would let submissions include predetermined change control plans (PCCP) that would lay out how developers would ensure changes are safe and effective. According to Ferdous Al-Farique, "While the agency has already allowed more than 500 AI/ML products on the market, many of which already allow PCCP, Congress passed legislation as part of the 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act that gave FDA explicit authority to approve PCCPs as part of AI/ML product applications." NASA reveals historic crew for 2024 Artemis moon voyage

The United States space agency (NASA) has unveiled the four-member crew for its upcoming mission around the moon, a team that includes the first woman, the first person of colour and the first Canadian assigned to a lunar mission. At a ceremony on Monday in Houston, Texas, NASA announced that Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Hammock Koch and Jeremy Hansen would crew the Artemis II mission for a 10-day flight, marking the agency's first manned moon voyage in over half a century. "For the first time in more than 50 years, these individuals -- the Artemis II crew -- will be the first humans to fly to the vicinity of the Moon," Vanessa Wyche, director of the Johnson Space Center, said in a statement. The launch, scheduled for 2024, will be only the second in the Artemis programme, a multinational initiative to establish a "long-term presence at the moon". The last time a manned crew approached the moon was in 1972, as part of NASA's Apollo programme. "This mission paves the way for the expansion of human deep space exploration and presents new opportunities for scientific discoveries, commercial, industry and academic partnerships," Wyche said.

The only member of Congress with an advanced degree in artificial intelligence says lawmakers should move slowly to impose new regulations on AI, in part because policymakers and even experts in the field have yet to lay out clear regulatory objectives. Rep. Jay Obernolte, R-Calif., says this deliberate approach is a good thing, despite pressure from high-profile tech leaders to halt AI development until its dangers are better understood. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Obernolte said it makes no sense to start regulating until Congress knows precisely what dangers it's trying to avoid. "Before we can create a regulatory framework around AI, we have to very explicit about what our goals are with our regulation," Obernolte said.

NASA's Perseverance Rover has collected a sample of Martian rock to be returned to Earth which could contain signs of life. But don't get too excited yet, as this particular tube won't reach a terrestrial laboratory where it can be studied for another 10 years or so. It has been roaming Mars to look for sampling sites that might contain ancient microbes and organics for almost a year now. In that time, it has completed its first of four search campaigns, which focused on the crater floor and the base of the Neretva Vallis delta. NASA's Perseverance Rover has collected a sample of Martian rock which could contain signs of life.
