AI is Far Worse Than Nuclear War, Says Prominent Researcher
Artificial general Intelligence (AGI) researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky says AI innovation is far worse than the nuclear bomb and could lead to the death of everyone on earth. But that may not be entirely accurate, according to some of his peers, who believe the risks are overstated. Yudkowsky spoke in the wake of an open letter signed recently by several luminaries including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, billionaire Elon Musk, Gary Marcus, and others, calling for a six-month moratorium on large language AI training in the world. "If somebody builds a too-powerful AI, under present conditions, I expect that every single member of the human species and all biological life on Earth dies shortly thereafter," he warned, in a recent article published by the Time Magazine. It is perfectly legitimate to be afraid of the power of a new technology. Just know that the companies that stand to cash in on the hype very much want you to be. You have probably heard by now: artificial intelligence (AI) is coming, it is about to change everything, and humanity is not ready. AI is passing bar exams, plagiarizing term papers, creating deepfakes that are real enough to fool the masses, and the robot apocalypse is nigh. The government is not prepared.

The annual report keeps track, collects e displays AI-related data, to support meaningful decisions, and advance AI responsibly and ethically. The AI Index Report supports many different organizations to track progress in artificial intelligence. These organizations include: the Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University, LinkedIn, NetBase Quid, Lightcast, and McKinsey. The AI Index Report also expanded its tracking of global AI legislation from 25 countries in 2022 to 127 in 2023. The demand for AI-related job skills is increasing in virtually all industries (in the US).
The Role of AI in Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis - MedCity News
Over 800 women died from pregnancy-related complications in 2020 in the United States, and well over half of these deaths were preventable. This isnโt news for professionals who work in this space because maternal deaths in the U.S. outnumber those in most industrialized nations in the west. Maternal outcomes for Black women in the US are even worse. Black mothers die from pregnancy-related complications nearly three times more frequently than white and Hispanic women. Despite efforts to prioritize improved maternal mortality, thereโs been very little progress. In fact, maternal mortality actually increased over 18% between 2019 and 2020. Much of this increase is a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. For excess deaths that arenโt attributable to complications from Covid-19, technology may hold the solution. Artificial Intelligence may improve maternal health outcomes in the US Many tech companies focused on developing and implementing AI-driven solutions to healthcare problems in the last few years. These recent advancements in AI give patients and their healthcare providers hope amidst worsening maternal health outcomes in the United States. Some of the newest iterations of AI for healthcare identify pregnant women who are at risk for premature birth and other complications. In doing so, it allows healthcare providers and patient care teams to intervene before itโs too late. As a result, their pregnant patients benefit from health education, as well as medical care and access to social services to lower their risk for negative outcomes. Thereโs even an element of this technology that leverages the social determinants of health (SDOH). If a pregnant woman has a history of preterm birth or preeclampsia, is struggling to find food, or they canโt get to their appointments because of inadequate transportation, AI helps their healthcare provider understand how those influence maternal and infant health outcomes. This way, healthcare providers can address them early, giving pregnant patients their best chance at positive outcomes. Identifying at-risk pregnant women earlier with AI Traditional methods of care limited healthcare providersโ efforts to identify at-risk pregnant women especially in comparison to what weโve been able to accomplish with AI and other technology in recent years. Before these advances, OB/GYNs and midwives were tasked with using often incomplete data along with persistence and sheer luck. They did their best to call patients with no guarantee that they would reach them. Many OB/GYNs and midwives did their best, but pregnant moms deserve so much more than thatโespecially as we face climbing maternal mortality around the world. Now, maternal care providers donโt have to spend long hours rounding up patient data and hoping to catch pregnant patients on the phone. AI has the power to provide all of that data, along with a complete analysis that identifies which patients are at the highest risk. The result? Identifying pregnancies sooner and targeted outreach efforts that prioritize high-risk patients. Healthcare providers who use AI in maternal care can identify over 70% of at-risk moms during the first trimester. This incredible benefit allows these parents to get the care they need from the very beginning of their prenatal journey. Earlier access to care allows for better outcomes and interventions for both mothers and their babies. And AI prepares the folks providing care and doing patient outreach ahead of time so they know exactly how to support each and every patient. Insurance plans are also using this AI to significantly reduce preterm birth disparities for pregnant Black women across the nation. There was a 10% reduction in preterm births and low birth weight among babies whose mothers received care and support leveraging AI tools. This helps avoid lifelong consequences for newborns, including breathing, hearing, and vision issues, developmental delays, and other health complications. The benefits of AI donโt end when a pregnant woman gives birth, though. It continues collecting and analyzing patient data into the fourth trimester, when women are still at risk for life-threatening pregnancy-related complications, like preeclampsia and mental health challenges like postpartum depression or psychosis. Lawmakers are taking maternal mortality to task Tech companies and healthcare providers arenโt the only stakeholders trying to improve maternal mortality rates in the US. Itโs become a legislative priority for many folks on Capitol Hill, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Together with many federal agencies, they released the White House Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis just last year. This historic effort aims to improve maternal health outcomes by providing more economic and social support to women before, during, and after pregnancy while also prioritizing research and data collection among other key agenda items. Recently, the National Governors Association (NGA) Chair New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Snyder Murphy hosted a roundtable discussion about efforts to improve birth outcomes and reduce overall maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. One area of focus that Mrs. Murphy highlighted included the significant influence โdata holds to transform our national maternal health landscape [ โฆ ] with up-to-date information, we can create policies that are informed by reality. We can direct our strategy to target specific goals. And, most importantly, we can measure our performance and make essential revisions, change direction and learn from our experiences.โ Additionally, administrations in states such as Texas and Florida are including maternal health goals in their Medicaid managed care contracts. As the government continues working toward better maternal healthcare, AI and other technology will undoubtedly be a key piece of the puzzle to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities. Veteran NASA astronaut Tom Jones recaps the historic Artemis I mission after the Orion capsule made a successful return to earth and outlines what this means for the lunar return program. The Artemis II astronauts were named in a historic announcement on Monday. The astronauts include NASA's Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman and Christina Hammock Koch, and the Canadian Space Agency's Jeremy Hansen. All four will venture around the moon no sooner than late 2024. They'll be the first to fly NASA's Orion space capsule and will lift off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center on a Space Launch System rocket.

Biden to meet with experts on AI 'risks and opportunities'
FOX Business correspondent Lydia Hu has the latest on jobs at risk as AI further develops on'America's Newsroom.' President Biden will meet with science and technology advisers on Wednesday to discuss the "risks and opportunities" that artificial intelligence technologies pose for Americans and national security. A White House official said the president would focus on discussing the importance of protecting rights and safety to ensure there are appropriate safeguards and innovation is responsible. Furthermore, Biden will call on Congress to pass bipartisan legislation to protect children and to limit the personal data tech companies collect. The Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, or PCAST, is a federal advisory committee composed of experts outside the federal government charged with making science, technology and innovation policy recommendations to the White House.

The French government on Tuesday approved a key budget bill presented as the country's biggest military spending spree in more than 50 years, underscoring the impact of Russia's war in Ukraine. The bill foresees $450 billion in military spending or the period covering 2024-2030 - up by more than a third relative to the previous timeframe. Defense Minister Sรฉbastien Lecornu said bill's political, budgetary, military and technological drive is comparable to the huge push in the 1960s that saw France develop nuclear weapons, making the country one of the world's major military powers.

Last week, a who's who of technologists called for artificial intelligence (AI) labs to stop training the most powerful AI systems for at least six months, citing "profound risks to society and humanity." In an open letter that now has more than 3,100 signatories, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, tech leaders called out San Francisco-based OpenAI Lab's recently announced GPT-4 algorithm in particular, saying the company should halt further development until oversight standards are in place. That goal has the backing of technologists, CEOs, CFOs, doctoral students, psychologists, medical doctors, software developers and engineers, professors, and public school teachers from all over the globe. On Friday, Italy became the first Western nation to ban further development of ChatGPT over privacy concerns; the natural language processing app experienced a data breach last month involving user conversations and payment information. ChatGPT is the popular GPT-based chatbot created by OpenAI and backed by billions of dollars from Microsoft.
Americans warned to 'beware a flood of fake Trump mugshots' powered by AI in advance of arraignment
The former president is set to be arraigned by the Manhattan district attorney on Tuesday. A number of media outlets issued a warning to Americans in advance of Donald Trump's arraignment in New York City, telling them that fake mugshots of the former president may soon flood the internet. Time told Americans that the source of a fake mugshot of Trump might come from "online pro-Trump groups," also sharing reputed comments from internet forums. "'Let's make our own version and circulate it!' one person posted on a popular pro-Trump forum. 'No one will know what's real!' Another person posted'If they don't release the mugshot immediately, just stage a mugshot as to not hold up any billboards, t-shirts, posters, or fundraising drives,'" according to the magazine.
