And some of its most crucial concepts are things that you won't have been taught in school (see: Competitive Pressure). Trying to get up to speed can be difficult. AI research is complicated, and lots of the language is new even for the researchers themselves. But there's no reason the public can't grapple with the big issues at stake, like we learned to do with climate change and the internet. To help everyone engage more fully with the AI debate, TIME has put together a handy glossary of its most common terminology. Whether you're a complete beginner or you already know your AGIs from your GPTs, this A to Z is designed to be a public resource for everyone grappling with the power, promise, and perils of artificial intelligence. AGI stands for Artificial General Intelligence--a hypothetical future technology that can perform most economically productive tasks more effectively than a human.
Ukraine's Quest for Homegrown AI Drones to Take On Russia
The war in Ukraine, now into its 14th grueling month, has displaced millions, sparked global food shortages, and threatened to spiral into wider conflict. It has also highlighted how new technologies--especially ones drawn from the commercial sector--are upending conventional military doctrine. Ukraine has resisted and repelled Russia's much larger military force, thanks in large part to a willingness, borne of necessity, to adopt and experiment with novel technologies, not all of them originally designed for military use. I recently spoke with Ukraine's 32-year-old minister of digital transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, about the country's interest in tapping new technology to boost the war effort. Fedorov spoke over Zoom, via an interpreter, from an undisclosed location in Ukraine, about plans to produce more sophisticated drones and other autonomous systems, and to incubate military startups.

The majority were intercepted by Israel, but the attack led to the most violent confrontation between Lebanon and Israel since 2006, a sign that the increasing violence in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories is threatening to spread across the region.
Pentagon goes on AI hiring spree to bring machine learning capabilities to the battlefield
'The Five' discuss how AI generated images are getting harder to distinguish from reality and how the Dalai Lama asked a young boy to suck his tongue. The Pentagon is hiring data scientists, technologists and engineers as part of its effort to incorporate artificial intelligence into the machinery used to wage war. The Defense Department has posted several AI jobs on USAjobs.gov over the last few weeks, including many with salaries well into six figures. One of the higher paying jobs advertised in the last few weeks is for a senior technologist for "cognitive and decision science" at the U.S. Navy's Point Loma Complex in San Diego. That job starts at $170,000 and could pay as much as $212,000 year for someone who can help insert "cutting-edge technology" into Navy weaponry and equipment.

OpenAI's ChatGPT leader says AI needs regulation

The interview was published Sunday morning, a day before Google announced its new conversational AI platform, Bard, and two days before the Bing-ChatGPT integration was officially announced to the public. Tech firms have researched AI for years, but the sudden explosion of public platforms has catapulted the technology into public awareness and ramped up the financial stakes: Microsoft's market cap has risen almost $200 billion since it announced its OpenAI investment last month. OpenAI announced on Feb. 1, 2023, that a commercial version of its chatbot, called ChatGPT Plus, would soon be available to users in the United States. Microsoft announced its ChatGPT-Bing integration less than a week later.
OpenAI to offer users up to $20000 for reporting bugs
OpenAI, the firm behind chatbot sensation ChatGPT, said on Tuesday that it would offer up to $20,000 to users reporting vulnerabilities in its artificial intelligence systems. OpenAI Bug Bounty program, which went live on Tuesday, will offer rewards to people based on the severity of the bugs they report, with rewards starting from $200 per vulnerability. Technology companies often use bug bounty programs to encourage programmers and ethical hackers to report bugs in their software systems. According to details on the bug bounty platform Bugcrowd, OpenAI has invited researchers to review certain functionality of ChatGPT and the framework read more OpenAI to offer users up to $20,000 for reporting bugs.
