Fact-Saboteurs: A Taxonomy of Evidence Manipulation Attacks against Fact-Verification Systems

Mis- and disinformation are a substantial global threat to our security and safety. To cope with the scale of online misinformation, researchers have been working on automating fact-checking by retrieving and verifying against relevant evidence. However, despite many advances, a comprehensive evaluation of the possible attack vectors against such systems is still lacking. Particularly, the automated fact-verification process might be vulnerable to the exact disinformation campaigns it is trying to combat. In this work, we assume an adversary that automatically tampers with the online evidence in order to disrupt the fact-checking model via camouflaging the relevant evidence or planting a misleading one. We first propose an exploratory taxonomy that spans these two targets and the different threat model dimensions. Guided by this, we design and propose several potential attack methods. We show that it is possible to subtly modify claim-salient snippets in the evidence and generate diverse and claim-aligned evidence. Thus, we highly degrade the fact-checking performance under many different permutations of the taxonomy's dimensions. The attacks are also robust against post-hoc modifications of the claim. Our analysis further hints at potential limitations in models' inference when faced with contradicting evidence. We emphasize that these attacks can have harmful implications on the inspectable and human-in-the-loop usage scenarios of such models, and we conclude by discussing challenges and directions for future defenses.
Revisiting DocRED -- Addressing the False Negative Problem in Relation Extraction

The DocRED dataset is one of the most popular and widely used benchmarks for document-level relation extraction (RE). It adopts a recommend-revise annotation scheme so as to have a large-scale annotated dataset. However, we find that the annotation of DocRED is incomplete, i.e., false negative samples are prevalent. We analyze the causes and effects of the overwhelming false negative problem in the DocRED dataset. To address the shortcoming, we re-annotate 4,053 documents in the DocRED dataset by adding the missed relation triples back to the original DocRED. We name our revised DocRED dataset Re-DocRED. We conduct extensive experiments with state-of-the-art neural models on both datasets, and the experimental results show that the models trained and evaluated on our Re-DocRED achieve performance improvements of around 13 F1 points. Moreover, we conduct a comprehensive analysis to identify the potential areas for further improvement. Our dataset is publicly available at https://github.com/tonytan48/Re-DocRED.

NASA astronauts Woody Hoburg and Steve Bowen on Thursday upgraded the International Space Station's power supply by installing a new roll-out solar array. Hoburg and Bowen, flight engineers on Expedition 69, completed their spacewalk just before 2:30 p.m. EDT, after 5 hours and 35 minutes. Their main objective, per NASA, was to install an ISS Roll-Out Array, or IROSA, to augment power generation for the 1B power channel on the station's starboard truss structure. Arrays are collections of solar panels wired together to capture sunlight and produce power for the space station.
Texas authorities nab previously deported MS-13 gang member on international watchlist
Texas DPS said the smuggler was smuggling two illegal immigrants from Mexico. Texas authorities announced Thursday that they have arrested a confirmed MS-13 gang member with a lengthy rap sheet, whose name is on an international watchlist, after he attempted to escape deeper into the U.S. in a grain hauler on a train. Delmar Sanchez Zuniga is a previously deported Honduran national with a lengthy rap sheet, authorities said. Texas Department of Public Safety said in a statement on Thursday that he is a confirmed MS-13 gang member on the Transnational Criminal Organization Watchlist. The agency said that Texas Rangers, using drone technology, observed a number of illegal immigrants attempting to board a train in Maverick County on June 3.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, recently said that China should play a key role in shaping the guardrails that are placed around the technology. "China has some of the best AI talent in the world," Altman said during a talk at the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) last week. "Solving alignment for advanced AI systems requires some of the best minds from around the world--and so I really hope that Chinese AI researchers will make great contributions here." Altman is in a good position to opine on these issues. His company is behind ChatGPT, the chatbot that's shown the world how rapidly AI capabilities are progressing.

A Russian soldier whose surrender to Ukrainian forces was captured on drone camera, spoke for the first time about his experience. Ruslan Anitin, a draftee who was cornered alone by the Ukrainian military near the city of Bakhmut, surrendered by communicating via an aerial drone's camera. "It felt like it was never going to involve us at all," Anitin said of the conflict during an interview with the Wall Street Journal about his experience. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has developed a vast network of strategic investments and political relationships that's allowed the tech billionaire to wield significant influence over artificial intelligence and public policy in Washington, D.C., according to an explosive new report. The Bull Moose Project, a nonprofit advocacy group committed to developing "the next generation of America First leaders and policies," has spent months investigating Schmidt's financial disclosures, tax records, business documents and other publicly available information. As Russians fight for Ukraine, Kyiv is faced with a new dilemma

On June 1, he was part of four small military units that crossed into the western Russian region of Belgorod to attack Shebekino, a city of 40,000, and seize the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka. They clashed with border guards and servicemen and were backed by Ukrainian drone attacks and heavy, indiscriminate artillery fire that included banned cluster munitions, Russian officials claimed.

When technical writer and former WWII pilot Jonathan Ferguson changed his gender in 1958, it made the news in Britain. I've imagined the moment many times since I first read about it in a paper called "Hacking the Cis-Tem" by scholar Mar Hicks. Ferguson's name change, according to the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph and Morning Post, was straightforward: someone took a pen and amended a line in the Official Register. In my imagination, it was a fountain pen and written with a flourish, and in that moment Ferguson felt truly seen after years of hiding his true identity. I'm embellishing, but I want it to have been simple and meaningful.
How Shady Chinese Encryption Chips Got Into the Navy, NATO, and NASA
From TikTok to Huawei routers to DJI drones, rising tensions between China and the US have made Americans--and the US government--increasingly wary of Chinese-owned technologies. But thanks to the complexity of the hardware supply chain, encryption chips sold by the subsidiary of a company specifically flagged in warnings from the US Department of Commerce for its ties to the Chinese military have found their way into the storage hardware of military and intelligence networks across the West. In July of 2021, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security added the Hangzhou, China-based encryption chip manufacturer Hualan Microelectronics, also known as Sage Microelectronics, to its so-called "Entity List," a vaguely named trade restrictions list that highlights companies "acting contrary to the foreign policy interests of the United States." Specifically, the bureau noted that Hualan had been added to the list for "acquiring and ... attempting to acquire US-origin items in support of military modernization for [China's] People's Liberation Army." Yet nearly two years later, Hualan--and in particular its subsidiary known as Initio, a company originally headquartered in Taiwan that it acquired in 2016--still supplies encryption microcontroller chips to Western manufacturers of encrypted hard drives, including several that list as customers on their websites Western governments' aerospace, military, and intelligence agencies: NASA, NATO, and the US and UK militaries.
