AI hiring tools to be audited for sexism and racism under New York law

New Scientist

A first-of-its-kind law in New York City aims to make the use of AI in hiring and promotion both clearer and fairer. New York's Local Law 144, which goes into effect on 5 July, requires employers to get an independent audit of their automated employment decision tools to ensure that they do not demonstrate significant bias based on sex, race or ethnicity – though it does not cover discrimination based on factors such as …

Learning thermodynamically constrained equations of state with uncertainty

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Numerical simulations of high energy-density experiments require equation of state (EOS) models that relate a material's thermodynamic state variables -- specifically pressure, volume/density, energy, and temperature. EOS models are typically constructed using a semi-empirical parametric methodology, which assumes a physics-informed functional form with many tunable parameters calibrated using experimental/simulation data. Since there are inherent uncertainties in the calibration data (parametric uncertainty) and the assumed functional EOS form (model uncertainty), it is essential to perform uncertainty quantification (UQ) to improve confidence in the EOS predictions. Model uncertainty is challenging for UQ studies since it requires exploring the space of all possible physically consistent functional forms. Thus, it is often neglected in favor of parametric uncertainty, which is easier to quantify without violating thermodynamic laws. This work presents a data-driven machine learning approach to constructing EOS models that naturally captures model uncertainty while satisfying the necessary thermodynamic consistency and stability constraints. We propose a novel framework based on physics-informed Gaussian process regression (GPR) that automatically captures total uncertainty in the EOS and can be jointly trained on both simulation and experimental data sources. A GPR model for the shock Hugoniot is derived and its uncertainties are quantified using the proposed framework. We apply the proposed model to learn the EOS for the diamond solid state of carbon, using both density functional theory data and experimental shock Hugoniot data to train the model and show that the prediction uncertainty reduces by considering the thermodynamic constraints.

Estimating See and Be Seen Performance with an Airborne Visual Acquisition Model

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

-- Separation provision and collision avoidance to avoid other air traffic are fundamental components of the layered conflict management system to ensure safe and efficient operations. Pilots have visual-based separation responsibilities to see and be seen to maintain separation between aircraft. To safely integrate into the airspace, drones should be required to have a minimum level of performance based on the safety achieved as baselined by crewed aircraft seen and be seen interactions. Drone interactions with crewed aircraft should not be more hazardous than interactions between traditional aviation aircraft. Accordingly, there is need for a methodology to design and evaluate detect and avoid systems, to be equipped by drones to mitigate the risk of a midair collision, where the methodology explicitly addresses, both semantically and mathematically, the appropriate operating rules associated with see and be seen. In response, we simulated how onboard pilots safely operate through see and be seen interactions using an updated visual acquisition model that was originally developed by J.W. Andrews decades ago. Monte Carlo simulations were representative two aircraft flying under visual flight rules and results were analyzed with respect to drone detect and avoid performance standards.

Towards Open-Domain Topic Classification

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We introduce an open-domain topic classification system that accepts user-defined taxonomy in real time. Users will be able to classify a text snippet with respect to any candidate labels they want, and get instant response from our web interface. To obtain such flexibility, we build the backend model in a zero-shot way. By training on a new dataset constructed from Wikipedia, our label-aware text classifier can effectively utilize implicit knowledge in the pretrained language model to handle labels it has never seen before. We evaluate our model across four datasets from various domains with different label sets. Experiments show that the model significantly improves over existing zero-shot baselines in open-domain scenarios, and performs competitively with weakly-supervised models trained on in-domain data.

DisasterResponseGPT: Large Language Models for Accelerated Plan of Action Development in Disaster Response Scenarios

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The development of plans of action in disaster response scenarios is a time-consuming process. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer a powerful solution to expedite this process through in-context learning. This study presents DisasterResponseGPT, an algorithm that leverages LLMs to generate valid plans of action quickly by incorporating disaster response and planning guidelines in the initial prompt. In DisasterResponseGPT, users input the scenario description and receive a plan of action as output. The proposed method generates multiple plans within seconds, which can be further refined following the user's feedback. Preliminary results indicate that the plans of action developed by DisasterResponseGPT are comparable to human-generated ones while offering greater ease of modification in real-time. This approach has the potential to revolutionize disaster response operations by enabling rapid updates and adjustments during the plan's execution.

The Importance of Robust Features in Mitigating Catastrophic Forgetting

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Continual learning (CL) is an approach to address catastrophic forgetting, which refers to forgetting previously learned knowledge by neural networks when trained on new tasks or data distributions. The adversarial robustness has decomposed features into robust and non-robust types and demonstrated that models trained on robust features significantly enhance adversarial robustness. However, no study has been conducted on the efficacy of robust features from the lens of the CL model in mitigating catastrophic forgetting in CL. In this paper, we introduce the CL robust dataset and train four baseline models on both the standard and CL robust datasets. Our results demonstrate that the CL models trained on the CL robust dataset experienced less catastrophic forgetting of the previously learned tasks than when trained on the standard dataset. Our observations highlight the significance of the features provided to the underlying CL models, showing that CL robust features can alleviate catastrophic forgetting.

Towards Grammatical Tagging for the Legal Language of Cybersecurity

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Legal language can be understood as the language typically used by those engaged in the legal profession and, as such, it may come both in spoken or written form. Recent legislation on cybersecurity obviously uses legal language in writing, thus inheriting all its interpretative complications due to the typical abundance of cases and sub-cases as well as to the general richness in detail. This paper faces the challenge of the essential interpretation of the legal language of cybersecurity, namely of the extraction of the essential Parts of Speech (POS) from the legal documents concerning cybersecurity. The challenge is overcome by our methodology for POS tagging of legal language. It leverages state-of-the-art open-source tools for Natural Language Processing (NLP) as well as manual analysis to validate the outcomes of the tools. As a result, the methodology is automated and, arguably, general for any legal language following minor tailoring of the preprocessing step. It is demonstrated over the most relevant EU legislation on cybersecurity, namely on the NIS 2 directive, producing the first, albeit essential, structured interpretation of such a relevant document. Moreover, our findings indicate that tools such as SpaCy and ClausIE reach their limits over the legal language of the NIS 2.

Safety-Aware Task Composition for Discrete and Continuous Reinforcement Learning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Compositionality is a critical aspect of scalable system design. Reinforcement learning (RL) has recently shown substantial success in task learning, but has only recently begun to truly leverage composition. In this paper, we focus on Boolean composition of learned tasks as opposed to functional or sequential composition. Existing Boolean composition for RL focuses on reaching a satisfying absorbing state in environments with discrete action spaces, but does not support composable safety (i.e., avoidance) constraints. We advance the state of the art in Boolean composition of learned tasks with three contributions: i) introduce two distinct notions of safety in this framework; ii) show how to enforce either safety semantics, prove correctness (under some assumptions), and analyze the trade-offs between the two safety notions; and iii) extend Boolean composition from discrete action spaces to continuous action spaces. We demonstrate these techniques using modified versions of value iteration in a grid world, Deep Q-Network (DQN) in a grid world with image observations, and Twin Delayed DDPG (TD3) in a continuous-observation and continuous-action Bullet physics environment. We believe that these contributions advance the theory of safe reinforcement learning by allowing zero-shot composition of policies satisfying safety properties.
