The Morning After: FBI warns about fake election security videos

Engadget

At the start of the weekend, the FBI issued a statement addressing videos "falsely claiming to be from the FBI relating to election security." That includes one claiming the bureau had "apprehended three linked groups committing ballot fraud," and one about Kamala Harris' husband. Disinformation has seemingly grown substantially in the final few days, with the presidential election kicking off tomorrow. Late last week, the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said they'd traced two other videos back to "Russian influence actors," including one falsely depicting individuals from Haiti voting illegally in multiple counties in Georgia. Just a couple of days to go, then everything will be fine.

The Artificial State

The New Yorker

"Jacob Javits of New York is the first United States senator to become fully automated," the Chicago Tribune announced in 1962 from the Republican state convention in Buffalo, where an electronic Javits spat out slips of paper with answers to questions about everything from Cuba's missiles ("a serious threat") to the Cubs' prospects (dim). Javits also harbors thoughts on medical care for the elderly, Berlin, the communist menace," and more than a hundred other subjects, the Tribune reported after an interview with the machine. Javits may have been the first automated American politician, but he wasn't the last. Since the nineteen-sixties, much of American public life has become automated, driven by computers and predictive algorithms that can do the political work of rallying support, running campaigns, communicating with constituents, and even crafting policy. In that same stretch of time, the proportion of Americans who say that they trust the U.S. government to do what is right ...

Generative Artificial Intelligence Meets Synthetic Aperture Radar: A Survey

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

SAR images possess unique attributes that present challenges for both human observers and vision AI models to interpret, owing to their electromagnetic characteristics. The interpretation of SAR images encounters various hurdles, with one of the primary obstacles being the data itself, which includes issues related to both the quantity and quality of the data. The challenges can be addressed using generative AI technologies. Generative AI, often known as GenAI, is a very advanced and powerful technology in the field of artificial intelligence that has gained significant attention. The advancement has created possibilities for the creation of texts, photorealistic pictures, videos, and material in various modalities. This paper aims to comprehensively investigate the intersection of GenAI and SAR. First, we illustrate the common data generation-based applications in SAR field and compare them with computer vision tasks, analyzing the similarity, difference, and general challenges of them. Then, an overview of the latest GenAI models is systematically reviewed, including various basic models and their variations targeting the general challenges. Additionally, the corresponding applications in SAR domain are also included. Specifically, we propose to summarize the physical model based simulation approaches for SAR, and analyze the hybrid modeling methods that combine the GenAI and interpretable models. The evaluation methods that have been or could be applied to SAR, are also explored. Finally, the potential challenges and future prospects are discussed. To our best knowledge, this survey is the first exhaustive examination of the interdiscipline of SAR and GenAI, encompassing a wide range of topics, including deep neural networks, physical models, computer vision, and SAR images. The resources of this survey are open-source at \url{https://github.com/XAI4SAR/GenAIxSAR}.

Agent-Based Modeling for Multimodal Transportation of $CO_2$ for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage: CCUS-Agent

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

To understand the system-level interactions between the entities in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), an agent-based foundational modeling tool, CCUS-Agent, is developed for a large-scale study of transportation flows and infrastructure in the United States. Key features of the tool include (i) modular design, (ii) multiple transportation modes, (iii) capabilities for extension, and (iv) testing against various system components and networks of small and large sizes. Five matching algorithms for CO2 supply agents (e.g., powerplants and industrial facilities) and demand agents (e.g., storage and utilization sites) are explored: Most Profitable First Year (MPFY), Most Profitable All Years (MPAY), Shortest Total Distance First Year (SDFY), Shortest Total Distance All Years (SDAY), and Shortest distance to long-haul transport All Years (ACAY). Before matching, the supply agent, demand agent, and route must be available, and the connection must be profitable. A profitable connection means the supply agent portion of revenue from the 45Q tax credit must cover the supply agent costs and all transportation costs, while the demand agent revenue portion must cover all demand agent costs. A case study employing over 5,500 supply and demand agents and multimodal CCUS transportation infrastructure in the contiguous United States is conducted. The results suggest that it is possible to capture over 9 billion tonnes (GT) of CO2 from 2025 to 2043, which will increase significantly to 22 GT if the capture costs are reduced by 40%. The MPFY and SDFY algorithms capture more CO2 earlier in the time horizon, while the MPAY and SDAY algorithms capture more later in the time horizon.

Distance-based Multiple Non-cooperative Ground Target Encirclement for Complex Environments

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper proposes a comprehensive strategy for complex multi-target-multi-drone encirclement in an obstacle-rich and GPS-denied environment, motivated by practical scenarios such as pursuing vehicles or humans in urban canyons. The drones have omnidirectional range sensors that can robustly detect ground targets and obtain noisy relative distances. After each drone task is assigned, a novel distance-based target state estimator (DTSE) is proposed by estimating the measurement output noise variance and utilizing the Kalman filter. By integrating anti-synchronization techniques and pseudo-force functions, an acceleration controller enables two tasking drones to cooperatively encircle a target from opposing positions while navigating obstacles. The algorithms effectiveness for the discrete-time double-integrator system is established theoretically, particularly regarding observability. Moreover, the versatility of the algorithm is showcased in aerial-to-ground scenarios, supported by compelling simulation results. Experimental validation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Distributionally Robust Optimization

arXiv.org Machine Learning

With its early roots in the development of calculus by Isaac Newton, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Pierre de Ferma t and others in the late 17th century, mathematical optimization has a rich his tory that involves contributions from numerous mathematicians, economists, eng ineers, and scientists. The birth of modern mathematical optimization is commonly c redited to George Dantzig, whose simplex algorithm developed in 1947 solves l inear optimization problems where โ„“ is affine and X is a polyhedron ( Dantzig 1956). Subsequent milestones include the development of the rich theory of convex a nalysis ( Rockafellar 1970) as well as the discovery of polynomial-time solution metho ds for linear ( Khachiyan 1979, Karmarkar 1984) and broad classes of nonlinear convex optimization problems ( Nesterov and Nemirovskii 1994). Classical optimization problems are deterministic, that is, all problem data are assumed to be known with certainty. However, most decision pro blems encountered in practice depend on parameters that are corrupted by measu rement errors or that are revealed only after a decision must be determined and committed. A naรฏve approach to model uncertainty-affected decision problems a s deterministic optimization problems would be to replace all uncertain paramete rs with their expected values or with appropriate point predictions. However, it h as long been known and well-documented that decision-makers who replace an un certain parameter of an optimization problem with its mean value fall victim to th e'flaw of averages' ( Savage, Scholtes and Zweidler 2006, Savage 2012).

Query-Efficient Adversarial Attack Against Vertical Federated Graph Learning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Graph neural network (GNN) has captured wide attention due to its capability of graph representation learning for graph-structured data. However, the distributed data silos limit the performance of GNN. Vertical federated learning (VFL), an emerging technique to process distributed data, successfully makes GNN possible to handle the distributed graph-structured data. Despite the prosperous development of vertical federated graph learning (VFGL), the robustness of VFGL against the adversarial attack has not been explored yet. Although numerous adversarial attacks against centralized GNNs are proposed, their attack performance is challenged in the VFGL scenario. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to explore the adversarial attack against VFGL. A query-efficient hybrid adversarial attack framework is proposed to significantly improve the centralized adversarial attacks against VFGL, denoted as NA2, short for Neuron-based Adversarial Attack. Specifically, a malicious client manipulates its local training data to improve its contribution in a stealthy fashion. Then a shadow model is established based on the manipulated data to simulate the behavior of the server model in VFGL. As a result, the shadow model can improve the attack success rate of various centralized attacks with a few queries. Extensive experiments on five real-world benchmarks demonstrate that NA2 improves the performance of the centralized adversarial attacks against VFGL, achieving state-of-the-art performance even under potential adaptive defense where the defender knows the attack method. Additionally, we provide interpretable experiments of the effectiveness of NA2 via sensitive neurons identification and visualization of t-SNE.

Communication and Energy-Aware Multi-UAV Coverage Path Planning for Networked Operations

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper presents a communication and energy-aware Multi-UAV Coverage Path Planning (mCPP) method for scenarios requiring continuous inter-UAV communication, such as cooperative search and rescue and surveillance missions. Unlike existing mCPP solutions that focus on energy, time, or coverage efficiency, our approach generates coverage paths that require minimal the communication range to maintain inter-UAV connectivity while also optimizing energy consumption. The mCPP problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization task, aiming to minimize both the communication range requirement and energy consumption. Our approach significantly reduces the communication range needed for maintaining connectivity while ensuring energy efficiency, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. Its effectiveness is validated through simulations on complex and arbitrary shaped regions of interests, including scenarios with no-fly zones. Additionally, real-world experiment demonstrate its high accuracy, achieving 99\% consistency between the estimated and actual communication range required during a multi-UAV coverage mission involving three UAVs.

Addressing Uncertainty in LLMs to Enhance Reliability in Generative AI

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In this paper, we present a dynamic semantic clustering approach inspired by the Chinese Restaurant Process, aimed at addressing uncertainty in the inference of Large Language Models (LLMs). We quantify uncertainty of an LLM on a given query by calculating entropy of the generated semantic clusters. Further, we propose leveraging the (negative) likelihood of these clusters as the (non)conformity score within Conformal Prediction framework, allowing the model to predict a set of responses instead of a single output, thereby accounting for uncertainty in its predictions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our uncertainty quantification (UQ) technique on two well known question answering benchmarks, COQA and TriviaQA, utilizing two LLMs, Llama2 and Mistral. Our approach achieves SOTA performance in UQ, as assessed by metrics such as AUROC, AUARC, and AURAC. The proposed conformal predictor is also shown to produce smaller prediction sets while maintaining the same probabilistic guarantee of including the correct response, in comparison to existing SOTA conformal prediction baseline.
