In a Fox News appearance, Johnson agreed that the White House, and more broadly the U.S. government, does not seem concerned about the increased sightings in New Jersey and elsewhere in the Northeast. "Look, I'm the speaker of the House. I have the exact same frustrations that you do and all of us do. We don't have the answers. The administration is not providing them," Johnson said.

None of the mysterious drones reported over the skies of the U.S. Northeast are being flown by the Pentagon or are part of secret government tests, a Defense Department spokesman said Tuesday. Major General Pat Ryder told reporters that top department officials take seriously any cases of drones flying near or over U.S. military sites, though he added this was not a new concern given the volume of daily drone flights. "We will typically, when we detect them, attempt to classify them and take appropriate measures," Ryder said. "Is it possible that some of those are surveilling? But can you make that assumption in every case, not necessarily."

Described by analysts as "China's premier AI chip designers", Moore Threads and Biren Technology are subject to US export restrictions over their development of chips that "can be used to provide artificial intelligence capabilities to further development of weapons of mass destruction, advanced weapons systems and hi-tech surveillance applications that create national security concerns". However, prior to the US blacklisting in 2023, the two companies secured extensive licences with the UK-based Imagination Technologies, which is among a handful of firms worldwide that design an advanced type of microchip crucial for AI systems, and is regarded as a jewel of the UK's technology industry. A spokesperson for Imagination said: "At no stage has Imagination (or its owners) considered or implemented transactions with third parties with the aim of enabling China or any other nation state to use or direct Imagination technology for state or military end uses." While Imagination's representatives confirmed the existence of the licences with Moore Threads and Biren Technology, they denied claims that the company, under the ownership of a private equity fund backed with Chinese state money, sought to deliberately transfer its state-of-the-art secrets to China. Two former senior Imagination insiders claim that "knowledge transfer programmes" accompanying the licences were so comprehensive that they risked the Chinese companies learning how to replicate Imagination's expertise.

The FBI field office in Newark urged New Jersey residents this week not to shoot down drones or point lasers at manned aircraft, taking to social media to warn against the dangerous -- and possibly deadly -- activity, which comes amid an uptick in reported drone sightings along the U.S. East Coast. In the statement, released by the FBI and New Jersey State Police, authorities expressly warned against such activities, citing an increase in pilots of manned aircraft in the area who have been hit in the eyes with lasers after being misidentified as a drone by someone on the ground. New Jersey State Assemblyman Paul Kanitra took a photo of what appears to be multiple drones hovering in the New Jersey sky on Thursday, Dec. 13. Officials said there is also a concern that people on the ground could also mistakenly fire weapons at what they believe to be an Unmanned Aircraft Systems, or UAS, but is in fact a manned aircraft.

Drones spotted flying over Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Southern California over the past week posed no threat to operations at the installation, according to reports. James C. Sartain told The Warzone that between Dec. 9 and 15, "there were six instances of unmanned aerial systems (UAS)" seen entering the airspace over Camp Pendleton. Sartain also said the UAS did not pose any threat to installation operations. The publication also learned from base personnel that countermeasures to take out the drones were not necessary as air and ground operations were not impacted.
