Google has updated its AI ethical guidelines and removed a key pledge not to use the tech in a dangerous way. The company erased the 2018 pledge on Tuesday which stated the tech giant'would not use AI for weapons or surveillance'. The revised policy now shows that Google will only develop AI'responsibly' and in line with'widely accepted principles of international law and human rights.' Google's change has sparked internal backlash as employees called the move'deeply concerning' and that the company should not be involved in'the business of war.' Matt Mahmoudi, Amnesty adviser on AI and human rights, shamed Google for the move, saying the tech giant set a'dangerous precedent.' 'AI-powered technologies could fuel surveillance and lethal killing systems at a vast scale, potentially leading to mass violations and infringing on the fundamental right to privacy,' he added.


US lawmakers want DeepSeek banned from government devices

Two US Congress members plan to introduce bipartisan legislation to ban China's DeepSeek AI chatbot from government devices. The bill's announcement came after a security expert said DeepSeek not only poses a threat to US AI stocks; it's also a national security risk. The chatbot has recently been the most downloaded app in the US. U.S. Representatives Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Darin LaHood (R-IL), each party's senior-most member on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, plan to introduce the "No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act." If all of this sounds familiar, the move echoes Congress' blocking of TikTok from government devices in 2022.

The bipartisan Strengthening Agency Management And Oversight Of Software Assets (SAMOSA) Act passed the House in December, and Sen. Joni Ernset, R-Iowa, is leading efforts to get it passed in the upper chamber. Ernst, the chair of the Senate DOGE Caucus, said the SAMOSA Act will "bring Washington out of the Stone Age and into the 21st century." Fox News Digital is told the bill could potentially save 750 million annually for taxpayers by consolidating federal agencies' cloud computing software licenses.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order at the end of January on artificial intelligence, which White House officials say shows that he is "dedicated to America's global leadership in AI technology innovation." That order directed the development of an AI Action Plan. On Thursday, the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy encouraged the American people to share policy ideas for the AI Action Plan by March 15.

After weighing the offer, Bouverot, who was at the time the co-chair of France's AI Commission, accepted. But France's Summit won't be like the others.

Even as Silicon Valley races to build more powerful artificial intelligence models, public opinion on the other side of the Atlantic remains decidedly skeptical of the influence of tech CEOs when it comes to regulating the sector, with the vast majority of Britons worried about the safety of new AI systems. The concerns, highlighted in a new poll shared exclusively with TIME, come as world leaders and tech bosses--from U.S. Vice President JD Vance, France's Emmanuel Macron and India's Narendra Modi to OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Google's Sundar Pichai--prepare to gather in Paris next week to discuss the rapid pace of developments in AI. The new poll shows that 87% of Brits would back a law requiring AI developers to prove their systems are safe before release, with 60% in favor of outlawing the development of "smarter-than-human" AI models. Just 9%, meanwhile, said they trust tech CEOs to act in the public interest when discussing AI regulation. The survey was conducted by the British pollster YouGov on behalf of Control AI, a non-profit focused on AI risks.


NeuralMOVES: A lightweight and microscopic vehicle emission estimation model based on reverse engineering and surrogate learning

This significant contribution makes it a critical sector for climate change mitigation, as reducing emissions from transportation is essential for achieving global climate goals. The sector's transformation through electrification, automation, and intelligent infrastructure offers promising avenues for substantial emissions reductions (Sciarretta et al., 2020; International Energy Agency, 2023; McKinsey Center for Future Mobility, 2023). However, the success of these innovations is critically dependent on the availability of suitable and accurate emission estimation models to guide the design and deployment of new technologies. Motor Vehicle Emission Simulation (MOVES) (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2022), one of the most well-established emission estimation models, serves as the official and state-of-the-art emission estimation model in the U.S., provided, enforced, and maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Despite its technical certification, MOVES' processing and software is tailored for two specific governmental uses: State Implementation Plans and Conformity Analyses U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (2021), which are for states to achieve and maintain air quality standards; and its use beyond trained practitioners and these specific analyses poses two main limitations. First, a steep learning curve, computational demands, and complex inputs make it difficult for researchers and practitioners to use. In particular, MOVES has rigid input requirements, including a combination of toggle-based settings within its GUI and structured input files in specific formats. Second, MOVES is tailored for macroscopic analysis and is unsuitable for microscopic applications, such as control and optimization, which commonly require second-by-second emission calculations for individual actions and vehicles.


Integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence in ADRD: A Framework for Streamlining Diagnosis and Care in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Healthcare systems are struggling to meet the growing demand for neurological care, with challenges particularly acute in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). While artificial intelligence research has often focused on identifying patterns beyond human perception, implementing such predictive capabilities remains challenging as clinicians cannot readily verify insights they cannot themselves detect. We propose that large language models (LLMs) offer more immediately practical applications by enhancing clinicians' capabilities in three critical areas: comprehensive data collection, interpretation of complex clinical information, and timely application of relevant medical knowledge. These challenges stem from limited time for proper diagnosis, growing data complexity, and an overwhelming volume of medical literature that exceeds any clinician's capacity to fully master. We present a framework for responsible AI integration that leverages LLMs' ability to communicate effectively with both patients and providers while maintaining human oversight. This approach prioritizes standardized, high-quality data collection to enable a system that learns from every patient encounter while incorporating the latest clinical evidence, continuously improving care delivery. We begin to address implementation challenges and initiate important discussions around ethical considerations and governance needs. While developed for ADRD, this roadmap provides principles for responsible AI integration across neurology and other medical specialties, with potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce care disparities, and advance clinical knowledge through a learning healthcare system.
