US borrowing costs hit highest level since 2007
US government borrowing costs climbed to their highest level since 2007 after a jump in oil prices further fuelled concerns about inflation. The effective interest rate on US government bonds over 10 years, known as the 10-year Treasury yield, rose as high as 5.04% but has eased back since. Government bond yields have been rising globally for months, driven by worries that inflation caused by the oil price surge since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran will lead to higher interest rates. The US has been buying back bonds back in a bid to drive the Treasury yield down, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calling the intervention successful. The global benchmark wholesale oil price rose to over $109 a barrel on Tuesday, up from around $86 at the end of August, after renewed concerns about Saudi Arabia's ability to export oil following rising tensions in the region .

Math Can't Go On Like This
AI just solved one of the world's hardest math problems. In late July, one of the world's most famous mathematicians issued a warning to his field. Math is entering a "turbulent period," the UCLA professor Terence Tao said in front of a packed lecture hall at the International Congress of Mathematicians. AI is getting so good at math, he said, that it's causing a "crisis in our mathematical values and practices." Earlier in the same week that Tao gave his talk at math's most prestigious conference, a researcher at Anthropic had used Claude to disprove an 87-year-old math conjecture.
Thirteenth Met Police officer sacked after Charing Cross Panorama film
Another Metropolitan Police officer has been dismissed following BBC Panorama's undercover investigation into the force's Charing Cross station. PC Mason O'Connor was sacked after a hearing found he had breached standards of professional behaviour, relating to a comment he made to a female colleague, the Met said. O'Connor was reported to a proactive wider investigation following the broadcast of the programme in October 2025 and he has become the 13th officer to be sacked since then, the force added. Other officers who were covertly filmed for the documentary were seen calling for immigrants to be shot, boasting about excessive use of force and joking about rape and sexual assault. O'Connor's dismissal relates to a comment he is alleged to have made to a female colleague while off-duty in a pub in October 2024.
Could AI really wipe out humanity – six experts spell out the risks
Experts say claims AI could kill all humans through biological weapons development had no scientific basis. Experts say claims AI could kill all humans through biological weapons development had no scientific basis. There have been some shocking claims in recent days about AI safety: we face a 10% chance of doom; AIs are worse than nukes; a "botnet" threatens the entire internet; it's all a big tech psyop. Below, we look at six claims and reactions to them. 'In 6-12 months a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent botnet - potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage' - Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic, 12 September 2026 Amodei's concerns should not be entirely dismissed but require a large shaker of salt, said Gary Marcus, an AI sceptic and emeritus professor at New York University.
