Trump has few good options to slow China's rise as AI superpower
Trump has few good options to slow China's rise as AI superpower U.S. President Donald Trump is likely to extend a trade truce with China reached last year when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits the White House next week. Even as U.S. President Donald Trump blasts Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei over his call to hit the brakes on artificial intelligence development, the two agree on the need to prevent China from catching up with the U.S. But doing that remains difficult in practice. In his 3,800-word missive titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," Amodei called on policymakers to avoid selling China advanced AI chips, crack down on chip smuggling and prevent "unauthorized distillation by companies in authoritarian countries," among other steps. He urged democracies to maintain a lead "as large as possible," echoing language from the administration of former President Joe Biden.

Village votes to leave UK over asylum housing plan in symbolic referendum
Residents of an Oxfordshire village have voted to become independent from the UK in a symbolic referendum held in protest at plans to house more than 1,000 migrants at a former military base. Villagers in Piddington, near Bicester, voted on Tuesday over Home Office proposals to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at nearby MoD Bicester. The 350 residents were invited to cast their ballot in a small box outside the village hall, the community hub of Piddington. The referendum was organised by the local parish council and out of 312 votes cast, 285 voted to leave, there were 26 no votes, and one ballot paper was spoiled. Delivering the result, Susannah Parden, vice chair of the parish council said: We are Piddington the village that roars. Following the result, council chair Tim McNally said: This is an example of democracy in operation.
NZ apologises to children forced to live in bush for years with fugitive dad
New Zealand has apologised to the three children of Tom Phillips who vanished with their father for years until he died in a police shootout after an inquiry found authorities failed to protect them. There were missed opportunities... and we're sorry about the impact that it's had on those children, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said on Wednesday. Agencies involved had underplayed, minimised or overlooked how the significant periods of isolation harmed the children, the inquiry found. When Phillips took his kids, then aged five, seven and eight, into the bush in December 2021, it wasn't the first time he had disappeared with them. Yet they would not be found for almost four years .
