Challenges and Paths Towards AI for Software Engineering

AI for software engineering has made remarkable progress recently, becoming a notable success within generative AI. Despite this, there are still many challenges that need to be addressed before automated software engineering reaches its full potential. It should be possible to reach high levels of automation where humans can focus on the critical decisions of what to build and how to balance difficult tradeoffs while most routine development effort is automated away. Reaching this level of automation will require substantial research and engineering efforts across academia and industry. In this paper, we aim to discuss progress towards this in a threefold manner. First, we provide a structured taxonomy of concrete tasks in AI for software engineering, emphasizing the many other tasks in software engineering beyond code generation and completion. Second, we outline several key bottlenecks that limit current approaches. Finally, we provide an opinionated list of promising research directions toward making progress on these bottlenecks, hoping to inspire future research in this rapidly maturing field.


Tropical Bisectors and Carlini-Wagner Attacks

Pasque et al. showed that using a tropical symmetric metric as an activation function in the last layer can improve the robustness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) against state-of-the-art attacks, including the Carlini-Wagner attack. This improvement occurs when the attacks are not specifically adapted to the non-differentiability of the tropical layer. Moreover, they showed that the decision boundary of a tropical CNN is defined by tropical bisectors. In this paper, we explore the combinatorics of tropical bisectors and analyze how the tropical embedding layer enhances robustness against Carlini-Wagner attacks. We prove an upper bound on the number of linear segments the decision boundary of a tropical CNN can have. We then propose a refined version of the Carlini-Wagner attack, specifically tailored for the tropical architecture. Computational experiments with MNIST and LeNet5 showcase our attacks improved success rate.


Sentiment Classification of Thai Central Bank Press Releases Using Supervised Learning

Central bank communication plays a critical role in shaping economic expectations and monetary policy effectiveness. This study applies supervised machine learning techniques to classify the sentiment of press releases from the Bank of Thailand, addressing gaps in research that primarily focus on lexicon-based approaches. My findings show that supervised learning can be an effective method, even with smaller datasets, and serves as a starting point for further automation. However, achieving higher accuracy and better generalization requires a substantial amount of labeled data, which is time-consuming and demands expertise. Using models such as Na\"ive Bayes, Random Forest and SVM, this study demonstrates the applicability of machine learning for central bank sentiment analysis, with English-language communications from the Thai Central Bank as a case study.


Training Large Language Models for Advanced Typosquatting Detection

Since the early days of the commercial internet, typosquatting has exploited the simplest of human errors, mistyping a URL, to serve as a potent tool for cybercriminals. Initially observed as an opportunistic tactic, typosquatting involves registering domain names that closely match that of reputable brands, thereby redirecting users to counterfeit websites. This has evolved into a sophisticated form of cyberattack used to conduct phishing schemes, distribute malware, and harvest sensitive data. Now with billions of domain names and TLDs in circulation, the scale and impact of typosquatting have grown exponentially. This poses significant risks to individuals, businesses, and national cybersecurity infrastructure. This whitepaper explores how emerging large language model (LLM) techniques can enhance the detection of typosquatting attempts, ultimately fortifying defenses against one of the internet's most enduring cyber threats. Cybercriminals employ various domain squatting techniques to deceive users and bypass traditional security measures. These methods include but not limited to: Character Substitution: These attacks swap similar looking characters like replacing "o" with "0" in go0gle[.]com to trick users into believing they are visiting the legitimate site. Omission or Addition: This method involves removing or adding a character, creating domains such as gogle[.]com

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has overseen tests of newly developed AI-powered suicide drones and called for their increased production, North Korean state media said Thursday. Photos released from the communist country show Kim inspecting new upgraded reconnaissance drones that are capable of detecting various tactical targets and enemy activities on land and at sea, KCNA state news agency said. Kim said unmanned control and AI capability must be the top priorities in modern arms development. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen tests of newly developed AI-powered suicide drones and called for their increased production, North Korean state media said.


Israeli drone strikes kill four people in southern Lebanon

Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health has said that at least four people have been killed in two separate Israeli strikes in south Lebanon, as Israel claimed it struck Hezbollah operatives. Thursday's strikes were the latest in a series of deadly attacks in south Lebanon, despite a November ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah after more than a year of hostilities, including two months of open war. An "Israeli enemy strike on a car in Yohmor al-Shaqeef led to the death of three people", said a Health Ministry statement reported by the National News Agency (NNA) on Thursday. The NNA said an "enemy drone" targeted a vehicle near the town, in a strike that came at the same time as artillery shelling. Elsewhere, the Israeli military said in a statement that "several Hezbollah terrorists were identified transferring weapons in the area of Yohmor in southern Lebanon", adding that the army "struck the terrorists".


North Korea's Kim Jong Un oversees tests of new AI-equipped suicide drones

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has personally supervised his country's testing of new AI-equipped suicide and reconnaissance drones and called for unmanned aircraft and artificial intelligence to be prioritised in military modernisation plans. State-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Thursday that Kim oversaw the testing of "various kinds of reconnaissance and suicide drones" produced by North Korea's Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex. The new North Korean drones are capable of "tracking and monitoring different strategic targets and enemy troop activities on the ground and the sea", while the attack drones will "be used for various tactical attack missions", KCNA said, noting that both drone systems have been equipped with "new artificial intelligence". Kim agreed to expand the production capacity of "unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence" and emphasised the importance of creating a long-term plan for North Korea to promote "the rapid development" of "intelligent drones", which is "the trend of modern warfare". Pictures from the tests, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, were said to show attack drones successfully striking ground targets, including military vehicles.
