Deal to get ChatGPT Plus for whole of UK discussed by Open AI boss and minister

The Guardian

The boss of the firm behind ChatGPT and the UK technology secretary discussed a multibillion-pound deal to give the entire country premium access to the AI tool, the Guardian has learned. Sam Altman, a co-founder of OpenAI, talked to Peter Kyle about a potential agreement to give UK residents access to its advanced product. According to two sources with direct knowledge of the meeting, the idea was floated as part of a broader discussion in San Francisco about opportunities for collaboration between OpenAI and the UK. Those close to the discussion say Kyle never really took the idea seriously, not least because it could have cost as much as 2bn. OpenAI offers free and subscription versions of ChatGPT.

Is the AI bubble about to burst – and send the stock market into freefall? Phillip Inman

The Guardian

There are growing fears of an imminent stock market crash – one that will transform from a dip to a dive when euphoric headlines about the wonders of artificial intelligence begin to wane. Shares in US tech stocks have fallen in recent weeks and the prospect is that a flood of negative numbers will become the norm before the month is out. It could be 2000 all over again, and just like the bursting of the dotcom bubble it may be ugly, with investors junking businesses that once looked good on paper but now resemble a huge liability. Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve chair, is one of the policymakers tasked with keeping the wolf from the door. Speaking on Friday at the annual Jackson Hole gathering of central bank governors in Wyoming, he tried to calm nerves.

'AI can't write comedy', says SNL star Tina Fey

BBC News

Fey, who created 30 Rock, also revealed former Prime Minister David Cameron had wanted to speak to her about British shows while he was in power. She recalled: "After 30 Rock ended, like a year or two later, I was way out in Brooklyn working on this show called Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. "I was very happy to take a break from being on camera, jeans and dirty hair every day. "And I got this call from someone at NBC that said if you could come into Rockefeller Centre, David Cameron is here and has requested to meet you. "He was the current prime minister.

NASA spacecraft collects dust older than the sun from an asteroid more than 200million miles away

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Dust collected from an asteroid by a NASA spacecraft more than 200 million miles away from Earth contains material that is older than the sun. Scientists have analysed samples from the Bennu asteroid, which resembles the Death Star space station in the Star Wars films, and found it is'chemically primitive'. It contained'presolar grains' which are stardust that formed around dying stars billions of years ago. The samples provide a glimpse into the outer Solar System during the birth of the sun and are more pristine than any meteorite on Earth, according to a team of researchers. NASA spacecraft Osiris Rex briefly touched the surface of Bennu with a robotic arm and collected 120g of material which was put into a capsule before it returned to earth in 2023.

Meet the researcher hosting a scientific conference by and for AI

MIT Technology Review

That idea is not without its detractors. Among other issues, many feel AI is not capable of the creative thought needed in research, makes too many mistakes and hallucinations, and may limit opportunities for young researchers. Nevertheless, a number of scientists and policymakers are very keen on the promise of AI scientists. The US government's AI Action Plan describes the need to "invest in automated cloud-enabled labs for a range of scientific fields." Some researchers think AI scientists could unlock scientific discoveries that humans could never find alone.

Drone attack destroys UN aid convoy in Sudan's famine-hit Darfur region

Al Jazeera

A drone attack has hit a convoy of 16 trucks carrying desperately needed food to Sudan's famine-hit North Darfur region, the United Nations said, as warring parties trade blame for the attack. UN spokesperson Daniela Gross told reporters on Thursday that all drivers and personnel travelling with the World Food Programme (WFP) convoy were safe. At least three of the trucks caught fire, according to a WFP statement quoted by the Reuters news agency. Gross said all trucks had caught fire, according to The Associated Press news agency. It was not yet clear who was responsible for Wednesday's attack, the second in the past three months to prevent a UN convoy from delivering to North Darfur.

At least 18 killed in Colombia in drone attack on helicopter, car bombing

Al Jazeera

At least 18 people have been killed and dozens injured in two attacks in Colombia attributed to dissident factions of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group. In Cali, the country's third most populated city, a vehicle packed with explosives detonated on Thursday near a military aviation school, in an incident that left six people dead and 71 injured, according to the mayor's office. Hours earlier, a National Police Black Hawk helicopter participating in a coca leaf crop eradication operation was downed by a drone in the municipality of Amalfi, in the department of Antioquia, killing 12 police officers. Colombian President Gustavo Petro blamed the attacks on dissident factions of the now-defunct FARC group that have rejected a 2016 peace agreement to end a prolonged internal conflict that has left more than 450,000 dead in the country. Petro said on X that the attack on the police helicopter occurred as the aircraft was transporting personnel to an area in Antioquia, in northern Colombia, to eradicate coca leaf crops, the raw material for cocaine.
