Mamba-Assisted Non-Markovian Closure for Reduced-Order Modeling

Reduced-order modeling of high-dimensional dynamical systems is often hindered by the non-Markovian closure term that represents the effect of unresolved variables on the resolved dynamics. Inspired by the Mori--Zwanzig formalism, in which the closure takes the form of a memory functional of the resolved trajectory, we recast closure modeling as a sequence modeling problem and propose the Mamba-Assisted Closure (MAC) framework: a Mamba-based sequence model, trained to predict the closure from the resolved trajectory, is coupled with the reduced-order governing equations through a numerical integrator to advance the resolved variables in time. A key feature of the framework is its exploitation of the dual representation of state-space models -- the model is trained in a sequence-to-sequence fashion via the convolutional form, and deployed for step-by-step autoregressive rollout via the recurrent form, yielding both efficient long-trajectory training and constant per-step inference cost. On the viscous Burgers' equation and the chaotic two-scale Lorenz '96 system, the MAC model substantially outperforms the Markovian reduced-order model, the GRU-based sequence model, and the Wilks method in predictive accuracy and long-time rollout stability.

That is the equivalent of the annual residential electricity use of up to 760,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa. Drone hits nuclear facility as Kyiv and Moscow trade strikes

In a post on Facebook late Saturday, it added, "It is the Russian Federation that has illegally kept the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant under military control since March 2022, turning a civilian nuclear facility into an element of military infrastructure."

John Harrison is a really classy writer, winner of all sorts of awards, and his latest novel sounds right up my street. It's set in a future years after an obscure "crisis" changed everything, in a world where the seas are full of new creatures.

The most significant strike hit Taganrog, Rostov Oblast, where a major port fire broke out after drones hit a tanker, fuel tank and administrative building, Russia's RIA Novosti state media agency reported. "A tanker, a fuel tank, and an administrative building caught fire at the port of Taganrog as a result of a drone attack," Slyusar wrote. "According to preliminary information, there are no casualties. The information is being clarified."

Conf-Gen: Conformal Uncertainty Quantification for Generative Models

Conformal prediction (CP) and its extension, conformal risk control (CRC), are established frameworks for quantifying uncertainty in supervised machine learning through formal guarantees. However, recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) have been driven by unsupervised generative models, such as large language models (LLMs) and image generators, which are not directly compatible with CP or CRC. In this work we introduce conformal generation (Conf-Gen), a general framework adapting CRC to generative tasks while relaxing its theoretical assumptions. Conf-Gen unifies and generalizes previous attempts to apply CP to LLMs, and extends conformal methodology to entirely new domains. We demonstrate the flexibility of Conf-Gen through some novel applications, including obtaining conformal guarantees on: image generators producing non-memorized images, conversational AI systems having asked enough clarifying questions, and the output of AI agents being correct.
