Solar Power driven EV Charging Optimization with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Power sector decarbonization plays a vital role in the upcoming energy transition towards a more sustainable future. Decentralized energy resources, such as Electric Vehicles (EV) and solar photovoltaic systems (PV), are continuously integrated in residential power systems, increasing the risk of bottlenecks in power distribution networks. This paper aims to address the challenge of domestic EV charging while prioritizing clean, solar energy consumption. Real Time-of-Use tariffs are treated as a price-based Demand Response (DR) mechanism that can incentivize end-users to optimally shift EV charging load in hours of high solar PV generation with the use of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). Historical measurements from the Pecan Street dataset are analyzed to shape a flexibility potential reward to describe end-user charging preferences. Experimental results show that the proposed DQN EV optimal charging policy is able to reduce electricity bills by an average 11.5\% by achieving an average utilization of solar power 88.4


Deep learning for Lagrangian drift simulation at the sea surface

We address Lagrangian drift simulation in geophysical dynamics and explore deep learning approaches to overcome known limitations of state-of-the-art model-based and Markovian approaches in terms of computational complexity and error propagation. We introduce a novel architecture, referred to as DriftNet, inspired from the Eulerian Fokker-Planck representation of Lagrangian dynamics. Numerical experiments for Lagrangian drift simulation at the sea surface demonstrates the relevance of DriftNet w.r.t. state-of-the-art schemes. Benefiting from the fully-convolutional nature of Drift-Net, we explore through a neural inversion how to diagnose modelderived velocities w.r.t. real drifter trajectories.


Spatial Graph Convolution Neural Networks for Water Distribution Systems

We investigate the task of missing value estimation in graphs as given by water distribution systems (WDS) based on sparse signals as a representative machine learning challenge in the domain of critical infrastructure. The underlying graphs have a comparably low node degree and high diameter, while information in the graph is globally relevant, hence graph neural networks face the challenge of long-term dependencies. We propose a specific architecture based on message passing which displays excellent results for a number of benchmark tasks in the WDS domain. Further, we investigate a multi-hop variation, which requires considerably less resources and opens an avenue towards big WDS graphs.

The tanker, the Pacific Zircon, sustained minor damage to its hull with no injuries or spillage of the gas oil cargo, Israeli-controlled Eastern Pacific Shipping said Wednesday, and an Israeli official said Iran was responsible. Three maritime sources told Reuters that a drone was suspected to have attacked the tanker. An Israeli official said Iran was responsible for the attack by using a Shahed-136 drone, the type it has been supplying to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine.

The Pacific Zircon was "hit by a projectile approximately 150 miles off the coast of Oman ... on 15 November," Singapore-based firm Eastern Pacific Shipping which operates the vessel said in a statement, adding that there were no reports of casualties or any leakage of the cargo. "There is some minor damage to the vessel's hull but no spillage of cargo or water ingress," said the company which is owned by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer -- one of two sons of shipping magnate Sammy Ofer, who died in 2011. The tanker was carrying 42,000 tonnes of gas oil and bound for Buenos Aires, according to Samir Madani, co-founder of website TankerTrackers.com, The Bahrain-based United States Fifth Fleet said it was "aware of the incident".

An oil tanker associated with an Israeli billionaire has been struck by a bomb-carrying drone off the coast of Oman amid heightened tensions with Iran, an official has told the Associated Press. The attack happened on Tuesday night off the coast of Oman, the Middle East-based defence official said. The official spoke on Wednesday on condition of anonymity as they did not have authorisation to discuss the attack publicly. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a British military organisation in the region monitoring shipping, told the AP: "We are aware of an incident and it's being investigated at this time." The official identified the vessel attacked as the Liberian-flagged oil tanker Pacific Zircon.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will enable ships navigating in polar ocean conditions to be more efficient using a new route planning tool created by British Antarctic Survey (BAS) researchers. The tool aims to reduce carbon emissions and optimize science. The system, being developed by the BAS AI Lab, will be used by the crew of the U.K.'s polar research ship RRS Sir David Attenborough to make decisions about route planning. It will recommend the fastest and most fuel-efficient routes between two locations taking into account all the polar conditions such as sea ice, ocean dynamics and weather. The Captain and officers, with their vast knowledge and experience of sailing around the icy continent, can evaluate the options provided and select the best route.
