The battery story: From frogs' legs to electric cars
Murderers in early 19th-Century London sometimes tried to kill themselves before they were hanged. Failing that, they asked friends to give their legs a good, hard pull as they dangled from the gallows to ensure their death. Their freshly hanged bodies, they knew, would be handed to scientists for anatomical studies. They didn't want to survive the hanging and regain consciousness while being dissected. If George Foster, executed in 1803, had woken up on the lab table, it would have been in particularly undignified circumstances.
Best Buy has knocked $50 off the Ring Video Doorbell Pro
Late last week, our colleagues at TechConnect highlighted an Amazon deal for $50 off the Ring Video Doorbell Pro. That deal quickly disappeared, but good news: It's resurfaced at Best Buy. This Robot Baby Factory Is the Stuff of Nightmares
Tucked away in western Wisconsin, not terribly far from Minneapolis, sits a factory full of babies. This factory produces each baby in just 15 minutes, and sells them for $649 apiece. Many of them are given to teenagers, in a bid to keep them from having babies of their own. These'bot babies teach would-be parents and medical types how to care for a newborn, and let teenagers experience being awakened in the wee hours by a wailing infant so perhaps they'll think twice about pregnancy. Realityworks calls them RealCare babies and started producing them in 1994, when the dolls went by the name Baby Think It Over.
Honda is bringing its robotic lawnmower to the US
Robots are slowly making their way into the workforce, but there is one job humans may not mind these machines taking over – mowing the lawn. Honda has unveiled an autonomous robotic lawnmower that uses electric motors, sensors and three different programmable cutting patterns to take care of one of life's most tedious chores. Called Miimo, the robot is equipped with a minicomputer and is capable of recharging itself – when it hits less than 30 percent battery life, it heads back to its charging dock, reloads and returns to where it left off to finish the task. Ocean tech: Robot sea snakes and shoal-swimming subs
In the near future, ocean search-and-repair specialists won't need arms or legs, according to one vision. In fact, they are destined to be much more slithery. "We try to get people to move away from the word snake because it's seen as kind of scary but even I find myself all the time calling it a snake," says Richard Mills from marine tech firm Kongsberg. If the idea of a swimming robot snake doesn't appeal, you might want to skip the next few paragraphs. I first mentioned Eelume to a friend who asked me whether I would be allowed to have a swim with it.

Oita Prefecture embarks on 'smart forestry' initiative
OITA – With forestry workers growing older, Oita Prefecture has embarked on a "smart forestry" initiative to reduce workloads, partly through the use of drones. Forests cover 72 percent of the prefecture, with most of them cultivated plantations. Despite the use of mechanization for cutting down trees, planting still involves hard physical work, including climbing mountain slopes while carrying nursery trees weighing up to 30 kg. Forestry association workers are currently the local industry's main workforce, but 44 percent of them are 60 or older. Young people are reluctant to join their ranks, due partly to the physical labor.
