The People First Social Network Gab What is Gab? gab?ab/ informal verb talk, typically at length, about trivial matters. Gab is a people first social network-Users can post "Gabs," which have a 300 character limit-Users can follow other Gabbers and be followed back-Users can upvote or downvote Gabs-Top Gabs are ranked based on these votes-Gabs are also displayed in a chronological home feed, something that is no longer a defau... Rose Behar August 15, 2016 4:56pm In an expansive interview with the Washington Post, Apple CEO Tim Cook opened up about a number of personal and professional subjects, from the importance of his public coming out to why he believes analysts are wrong that Apple has nowhere left to grow. In response to media reports that a first information report has been registered against Amnesty International (AI) India over organizing an event on rights violations in Kashmir, a statement issued by the AI today said it is yet to receive the copy of the FIR.

Devouring Reddit threads might help artificial intelligence understand language better

The new machine, called a DGX-1, is optimized for the form of machine learning known as deep learning, which involves feeding data to a large network of crudely simulated neurons and has resulted in great strides in artificial intelligence in recent years. Language remains a very tricky problem for artificial intelligence, but in recent years researchers have made progress in applying deep learning to the problem (see "AI's Language Problem"). "This will allow us to train models on larger data sets, which we have found leads to progress in AI." OpenAI hopes to use reinforcement learning to build robots capable of performing useful chores around the home, although this may prove a time-consuming challenge (see "This Is the Robot Maid Elon Musk Is Funding" and "The Robot You Want Most Is Far from Reality").

This week, Intel announced the acquisition of machine learning startups Nervana Systems for a rumored 400M. This move is intended to improve Intel's artificial intelligence(AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities in its next generation architecture. The acquisition follows the news of Apple's acquisition of Seattle-based AI startup Turi for about 200M. These series of M&A events are signaling that we are entering a time of consolidation in the AI and ML markets.

Are Machine Learning Search Algorithms To Blame For Stereotypes?

#artificialintelligence

Do machine-learning algorithms processing search engine queries bring on prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping in query results? The paper submitted to the International Conference on Social Informatics scheduled for publication analyzes how Google and Bing represent female beauty in their image search results, particularly when it comes to different age and racial groups. For nearly every country analyzed, white women appear more in the "beautiful" results, and black and Asian women appear in the "ugly" ones, per The Washington Post, which initially pointed to the study. Searches for "ugly" women return images of those about 60% white and 20% black between the ages of 30 to 50.

How AI Will Redefine Love

#artificialintelligence

As Samantha's psychological and intellectual capacities grow, so does Theodore and Samantha's love for each other. The line between the consciousness experienced by intelligent machines and human beings will be blurrier than we would like to admit. Programming AI to have the capacity to feel love can allow us to create more compassionate AI and may be the very key to avoiding the AI apocalypse many fear. The person, place, event or service making the request or statement haven't realized that they are already serving or love to begin with.

"The information all becomes shareable and then the decision will be made by these kind of guardian angels for each of the firefighters," said Edward Chow, manager of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Civil Program Office and AUDREY program manager. The AI automatically warns a police officer inside to evacuate, while also telling incoming firefighters or hazardous-material teams to address the threat quickly. Those firefighters, police officers and EMTs of the future will carry body-worn sensors, cameras and augmented glasses with heads-up displays. "The proliferation of miniaturized sensors and internet of things devices can make a tremendous impact on first responder safety, connectivity and situational awareness," said John Merrill, Next Generation First Responder program manager for the DHS' Science and Technology Directorate.

All the parts are in place, since we already have multiple companies building drones that follow you autonomously. But object tracking in vision systems isn't new, nor is tying that to an aerial drone's flight and navigation abilities. I first talked about the possibility of personal companion drones with a drone-oriented entrepreneur three years ago, and since then, we've come a long way. Mostly, I'd be interested to see how it impacts smartphone usage, and what it does in terms of cutting back on our time spent interfacing directly with our connected gadgets.

A search program that has a word embedding algorithm plugged into it can bring resumes that contain more of these related words up to the top of the search pile, hopefully helping you to find the most qualified candidates without having to read through every single document. Word embeddings do similar work in computer programs that we interact with every day -- programs that target ads at us, decide what we see on social media, or work to improve Internet search results. But here's the problem: These word embeddings learn the relationships between words by studying human writing -- like the hundreds of thousands of articles on Wikipedia or Google News. For Kalai, the problem is not that people sometimes use word embedding algorithms that differentiate between gender or race, or even algorithms that reflect human bias.

This amazing search engine automatically face-swaps you into your image results

#artificialintelligence

A similar process is done on the target images to mask out the faces and intelligently put your own in their place -- and voila! It's not limited to hairstyles, either: put yourself in a movie, a location, a painting -- as long as there's a similarly positioned face to swap yours with, the software can do it. Kemelmacher-Shlizerman has also created systems that do automated age progression, something that can be useful in missing persons cases. "This is a first step in trying to imagine how a missing person's appearance might change over time."

Why Scheduling is More Social than You Think About MeetVibe

#artificialintelligence

Lunch dates, business meetings, and social gatherings sound like random events, but they all share two things in common: personal interactions and scheduling. Social dynamics include the behaviors, relationships and interactions of individuals and groups. We know the reason companies invest so much in automated systems is in an effort to save time and money. MeetVibe integrates the latest technology to reduce the time required for the act of scheduling so that people can make the most of their time with the ones who are important to them.
