That is the request by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who credited major staffing changes at the Transportation Security Administration for avoiding gridlock and long lines at airport security checkpoints this summer. Because of a shortage of TSA screeners, lawmakers and airlines had predicted long waits, headaches and confusion at the nation's airports during the peak summer travel season. Say hello to the Internet of Robotic Things

#artificialintelligence

The latest Internet of Things (IoT) sub-segment to emerge is the Internet of Robotic Things, where intelligent robots operate with relative autonomy. In essence the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) describes devices that are able to combine data from various sources, monitor events, determine a best course of action and manipulate objects in the real world. "Both commercial and consumer robotics systems can benefit from these capabilities," he said. "Smart edge devices can share embedded, local data with robotic systems, describing themselves and providing other information," said Kara.

Researchers at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and the University of Sussex, will use techniques developed to catalogue galaxies to analyse GP data in a search for early indicators of the medical condition. Dr Philip Rooney, a research fellow in astrophysics at Sussex, who will conduct much of the data analysis, said: "We regularly apply statistical and machine-learning techniques to catalogues of galaxies and galaxy spectra. "Researchers can apply these techniques to GP patient records, where the clinical condition is analogous to a galaxy, the GP database is similar to a galaxy catalogue and diagnosis of a condition is similar to the modelling of galaxy properties." Timely diagnosis of dementia allows patients to maximise their quality of life, benefit from treatments and plan for the future.

We have long relied upon simple image manipulation like blurring and pixelation to obscure sensitive information on the internet, but that may not work for much longer. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and Cornell Tech have developed a machine learning system that can identify faces and text in images with alarming accuracy. The researchers trained a neural network with images of faces and text and found it could often correctly identify the images again after they had been obfuscated with three different techniques -- YouTube's proprietary blur tool, standard mosaic pixelation, and the P3 algorithm. For some data sets, the neural network was able to correctly identify the YouTube blurred image with 80 or 90% accuracy.

NASA use space technology for cancer research

#artificialintelligence

The agency has been in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), allowing a portion of the space station for medical studies, including cancer research. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) collaborated with the City of Hope, a center for cancer research and treatment in California, to explore carbon nanotubes for the treatment of brain tumor. Last Sep. 6, JPL and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which is part of NIH, renewed their research partnership through 2021. "From a NASA standpoint, there are significant opportunities to develop new data science capabilities that can support both the mission of exploring space and cancer research using common methodological approaches," said Dan Crichton, head of JPL's Center for Data Science and Technology.

Intel buys computer vision startup Movidius as it looks to build up its RealSense platform

#artificialintelligence

Today, the company announced that it is acquiring the computer vision startup behind Google's Project Tango 3D-sensor tech, Movidius. Movidius has seen a great deal of interest in its radically low-powered computer vision chipset, signing deals with major device makers, including Google, Lenovo and DJI. At its recent IDF developers conference, Intel made major announcements related to its depth-sensing RealSense platform, including a new virtual reality platform called Project Alloy, feature upgrades to its autonomous drone piloting and other initiatives aimed at enhancing computer vision in consumer and enterprise devices. Movidius gives Intel an in to get its sensor tech on low-powered mobile devices.

Instead of learning to do things that people do well, ML could learn to do things that people do badly. We invented science precisely because our intuitions about the world have limitations. To learn anything new, we have to invent stories about how the world works, and then see how well these stories hold up. This kind of project would be harder than teaching machines to copy things we're good at, precisely because we don't know the right answers.

Artificial intelligence guru Robert Dale explains the benefits and shortcomings of natural language generation technology and advocates for disclosure of use of the software. Natural language generation, a field in artificial intelligence which automatically turns facts and statistics into coherent English and other languages, offers important advantages for finance and accounting, according to Robert Dale, a longtime expert in the technology. He is also co-author, with Arria's chief scientist Ehud Reiter, of the textbook, Building Natural Language Generation Systems, first published in 2000 and then again in 2006. We can build pretty sophisticated systems that can produce pretty sophisticated narratives, but we still cannot do that with quite the nuance of a human author.

Robots will steal 6% of US jobs by 2021, report suggests

#artificialintelligence

Customer service robots are already keeping pace with humans. So we will have people wanting to work and struggling to find jobs because the same trends are beginning to occur in other historically richer job creation areas like banking, retail and healthcare. In the short term, however, there's going to be some pain, as previously employed people struggle to find work in a fast-changing economy. Previously radical solutions like a universal basic income require serious consideration, or at least discussion, because radical change is coming whether we like it or not.
