Scientists discover facial expression used around the world as sign of disagreement

Daily Mail - Science & tech

If you're unsure whether a politician really disagrees with an issue, then just look for the'not face'. The facial expression has been discovered to be a universal sign for anger, disgust and contempt. Consisting of a furrowed brow, pressed lips and raised chin, the expression is found among many cultures, including those who speak English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. If you're unsure whether a politician really disagrees with an issue, then just for the'not face'. The facial expression has been discovered to be a universal sign for anger, disgust and contempt.

Do we owe our thick hair and tough skin to Neanderthals? World map of prehistoric ancestry shows how interbreeding has changed and even HELPED modern humans

Daily Mail - Science & tech

They died out more than 40,000 years ago but the legacy left by two prehistoric species of early humans is far more widespread than had been previously believed. Scientists have discovered a surprising number of bloodlines around the world carry fragments of DNA from Neanderthals or their sister species, the mysterious Denisovans. Their analysis suggests that our modern human ancestors appear to have interbred with the Denisovans just 100 generations after their trysts with Neanderthals. Scientists have produced new maps showing the levels of Neanderthal and Denisovan ancestry around the world. And the study has unearthed some surprising new benefits these illicit encounters have gifted to modern humans living today.

Stamford Hackathon Congratulates Its Winners

#artificialintelligence

It's now been a few weeks since our latest hackathon, and we're excited at the quality of developers, their projects, and experience everyone had. We're proud to announce the winners of the second Stamford Hackathon as follows: The Grand Prize was awarded to Shishir Garg, Anuj Garg, and Pradeep Yenneti for their Smart Home Assistant, a project that combined AI and IoT. The AI track first prize went to Marc Ira, Jared Russell, Brian McHugh, Cody Hess, and Tom Harvey, for the "Aziz-bot" an AI-enabled Slackbot. SIC's own Matt Terenzio won the AI second prize for "Follow This" The IoT track featured some fantastic projects, and the first prize went to Emily Serven and Caleb Dre for a room occupancy/management project, called "Is anyone here?" Best Hacker went to a team called MAPE, which incidentally were invited to Harman to present to their internal team, and comprised Vitali Kobzeu, Dmitri Komin, Roman Presnakov, and Aliaksandr Tsoi.

iOS 9.3: How to switch on Night Shift, the iPhone mode meant to help people go to sleep

The Independent - Tech

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

An Introduction to Deep Learning and it's role for IoT/ future cities

#artificialintelligence

This article is a part of an evolving theme. Here, I explain the basics of Deep Learning and how Deep learning algorithms could apply to IoT and Smart city domains. Specifically, as I discuss below, I am interested in complementing Deep learning algorithms using IoT datasets. I elaborate these ideas in the Data Science for Internet of Things program which enables you to work towards being a Data Scientist for the Internet of Things (modelled on the course I teach at Oxford University and UPM โ€“ Madrid). Deep learning is often thought of as a set of algorithms that'mimics the brain'. A more accurate description would be an algorithm that'learns in layers'.

Rage Frameworks Expands Its Artificial Intelligence Platform

#artificialintelligence

DEDHAM, MA--(Marketwired - Jan 28, 2016) - Rage Frameworks, a provider of knowledge-based automation technology and services, today announced major additions to its pioneering RAGE AI platform, adding two new powerful frameworks to its suite. RAGE AI significantly extends the frontier of deep learning and machine intelligence technology from "natural language processing" to "natural language understanding." RAGE AI incorporates deep linguistic parsing and proprietary innovations to understand meaning in context, which makes its solutions completely transparent, auditable and flexible. The platform facilitates unsupervised to supervised learning and contains several innovations to support automated knowledge acquisition including pragmatic knowledge. RAGE AI is not a black box and does not rely on statistical patterns present in training data.

Survey Findings - AIinFM

#artificialintelligence

We are pleased to announce the findings of our recent survey and should like to thank all those who gave their opinions on the impact of artificial intelligence on the facilities management (FM) and real estate sectors (RE). For practical purposes, artificial intelligence (AI) covers developments in software and hardware that include, but which are not limited to, smart applications, cognitive frameworks, robotics, actroids and drones. A summary of the findings is outlined below. The age distribution of respondents placed 52% in the 51-67 age group, with 32% in the 36-50 age group and 8% in the 26-35 age group. Our first question asked for an opinion on the impact that AI will have had on the FM and RE sectors 5 years from now. Just 4% considered that the impact would be negligible.

Machine Learning Isn't Data Science

#artificialintelligence

Too often, Machine Learning is used synonymously with Data Science. Before I knew what both of these terms were, I simply thought that Data Science was just some new faddish word for Machine Learning. Over time though, I've come to appreciate the real differences in these terms. I've always wondered how misconceptions like these endure for so long -- my current working hypothesis: people are deathly afraid of looking stupid. Too afraid of asking someone "what is machine learning?
