OS X update could use iPhone's Touch ID to unlock Macs

If this Touch ID to unlock a Mac functionality sounds familiar, the third party Knock app for iOS and Apple Watch unlocks a nearby computer with those devices rather than having to key in a password. Back in March, Recode reported that Apple Pay was on its way to the browser for making purchases on the web. This new report suggests that the Touch ID interaction with Macs will be used to confirm those transactions as well. As is the case with any rumor, it pays to be a bit skeptical. However, we won't have to wait long to see if this news is indeed true.

Earlier this week, a rousing headline shot at warp-speed across browsers and Twitter feeds: Women Swept The 2015 Nebula Awards, taking home the prestigious science-fiction and fantasy prizes in the categories of Novel, Novella, Novelette, Short Story and Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy work. The news might've come as a surprise to -- or, at least, to the chagrin of -- a boisterous group of science fiction writers and fans who've taken up the cause of restoring the genre to its tenants of yore: lighthearted adventure that's sleek, zippy, fun, and -- oh yeah -- comprised of shelves' worth of white male writers. The ostensible platform of the Sad and Rabid Puppies, whose name is meant to mock heartfelt liberalism, is meant to support action stories sans political or moral message. Last year, they rigged the voting for a similarly lauded set of prizes, the Hugo Awards, favoring white male writers and effectively quelling women and authors of color. Unlike the Nebulas -- which are voted on by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, an organization comprised not just of writers but editors and publishers -- the Hugos are controlled by readers, so the Puppies were able to leave their mark.

Accenture, IPSoft launch new practice for AI adoption in business

Accenture and IPSoft have launched a new practice called Accenture Amelia Practice (AAP), a new business unit aimed at helping clients adopt artificial intelligence in business. Accenture claims that AAP will help organisations in improving their business outcomes and create new growth opportunities. The company said that it will develop an array of go-to-market strategies, solutions and consulting service offerings for the deployment of virtual agent technology for clients across several industries. In the initial stages, the business unit will cater to clients in banking, insurance and travel industries with its virtual agent technology. Accenture chief technology officer, Paul Daugherty said: "Artificial intelligence is maturing rapidly and offers great potential to reshape the way that organisations conduct business and interact with their customers and employees. "At the same time, executives are overwhelmed by the plethora of technologies and many products that are advertising AI or Cognitive capabilities.

What can tiny robot bees do for us?

Robots today can do almost anything, it seems, but the latest development in microbot technology may be surprising: the ability to take a break. Scientists at Harvard and MIT have developed robot technology that uses static electricity to allow tiny bee-like drones, or micro aerial vehicles, to perch on objects, according to a new article published in Science. The tiny RoboBee, pioneered at the Harvard Microrobotics Lab, can perch on a variety of surfaces using electrostatic adhesion. Just as newly tumble-dried clothes cling to each other, the RoboBee uses the science of positive and negative electric charges to cling to surfaces such as ledges and trees. Once it is perched, the RoboBee clicks off its propeller wings, saving its energy and increasing the length of its mission.
