Knowing that an AI wrote Sunspring makes the movie more fun to watch, especially once you know how the cast and crew put it together. Director Oscar Sharp made the movie for Sci-Fi London, an annual film festival that includes the 48-Hour Film Challenge, where contestants are given a set of prompts (mostly props and lines) that have to appear in a movie they make over the next two days. Sharp's longtime collaborator, Ross Goodwin, is an AI researcher at New York University, and he supplied the movie's AI writer, initially called Jetson. As the cast gathered around a tiny printer, Benjamin spat out the screenplay, complete with almost impossible stage directions like "He is standing in the stars and sitting on the floor." Then Sharp randomly assigned roles to the actors in the room.
Rethinking Machine Learning In The 21st Century: From Optimization To Equilibration
The past two decades has seen machine learning (ML) transformed from an academic curiosity to a multi-billion dollar industry, and a centerpiece of our economic, social, scientific, and security infrastructure. Much work in machine learning has drawn on research in optimization, motivated by large-scale applications requiring analysis of massive high-dimensional data. In this talk, I'll argue that the growing importance of networked data environments, from the Internet to cloud computing, requires a fundamental rethinking of our basic analytic tools. My thesis will be that ML needs to shift from its current focus on optimization to equilibration, from modeling the world as uncertain, but stationary and benign, to one where the world is non-stationary, competitive, and potentially malicious. Adapting to this new world will require developing new ML frameworks and algorithms.

Wipro to deploy AI platform Holmes to do the job of 3,000 engineers
Bengaluru: Wipro Ltd will use its artificial intelligence platform Holmes to automate several aspects of its so-called fixed-price projects, saving up to 46.5 million and freeing around 3,000 engineers from mundane software maintenance activities. The move is part of Wipro's larger plan to generate 60- 70 million in revenue by selling the platform to new and existing clients in the current financial year. About 30,000 of Wipro's workforce in the delivery side of the business are engaged in fixed-price projects. The company has over 150,000 employees, including 110,000 in delivery. New chief executive officer Abidali Neemuchwala has set an ambitious target for Wipro-- more than tripling its revenue growth to 12-14% for fiscal 2017.

New research explains why so many biological networks, including the human brain (a network of neurons), exhibit a hierarchical structure, and will improve attempts to create artificial intelligence. The study, published in PLOS Computational Biology, demonstrates this by showing that the evolution of hierarchy โ a simple system of ranking โ in biological networks may arise because of the costs associated with network connections. Like large businesses, many biological networks are hierarchically organised, such as gene, protein, neural, and metabolic networks. This means they have separate units that can each be repeatedly divided into smaller and smaller subunits. For example, the human brain has separate areas for motor control and tactile processing, and each of these areas consist of sub-regions that govern different parts of the body.

A series of emails between American diplomats in Pakistan and Washington over drone strikes are the focus of the criminal probe involving presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's handling of classified information, according to a report Thursday by The Wall Street Journal. The emails in 2011 and 2012 were sent through a "computer system for unclassified matters" that gave the State Department input into whether a Central Intelligence Agency drone strike went forward, congressional and law enforcement officials briefed on the FBI probe told the Journal. Some of those emails were then sent by then-Secretary of State Clinton's aides to her personal email account and private server, officials told the Journal. The vaguely worded messages, however, didn't mention the "CIA," "drones" or details about the targets, the Journal reported. The emails were written within the often-narrow time frame in which State Department officials had to decide whether or not to object to drone strikes before the CIA pulled the trigger, officials told the newspaper.
