Are Stories A Key To Human Intelligence?
In a talk in Pittsburgh in 1997, the late evolutionary biologist Stephen J. Gould allegedly characterized humans as "the primates who tell stories." Psychologist Robyn Dawes went much further, suggesting humans are "the primates whose cognitive capacity shuts down in the absence of a story." To be sure, we love a good story. Research suggests that anecdotes can be as persuasive as hard data, and that jurors are influenced by the quality of the prosecution's and defense's "stories" when deciding whether to find a defendant guilty. Even in science, we seek explanations, not mere descriptions; in history, we want a good narrative, not a mere sequence of events. Or do they offer something more?

Artificial intelligence can now cook you a meal, chat to you on your phone, and beat you in a game of rock, paper, scissors. But Andy Rubin, who co-founded Android, believes that AI in the future will go one step further - being so powerful that it underpins every connected device. Mr Rubin said a combination of quantum computing and AI advancements could yield a conscious intelligence that would control every internet-enabled gadget. According to recent studies, certain jobs are already at risk of being replaced by automated workers. Accountants are 99 per cent likely to lose their jobs to machines.
Study: You'll Love Your Robot More If You Assemble It Yourself
There is such a thing as the "IKEA effect," which, according to one description, suggests that "when individuals construct products themselves, they tend to overvalue their (often mediocre) creations." The "IKEA effect" highlights the importance of "self-agency": when you make something yourself, the work it takes to make that thing gives you a richer sense of initiative and ownership. The result is you get a more positive perception of your creation (even if it's made of particle board). Now two researchers from Pennsylvania State University's Media Effects Research Laboratory want to find out if the same thing applies to robots. The researchers, Yuan Sun and S. Shyam Sundar, say previous studies in human-computer interaction have demonstrated that the "self-agency" effect is present in things as basic as customizing the interface of a software application, resulting in "more positive attitudes toward the technology, a heightened sense of control and identity, greater user engagement, and product attachment."

In the following section we introduce the back-propagation learning algorithm and use mini-batching to express the most compute intensive equations in matrix form. Once expressed in matrix form, hardware optimized numerical linear algebra routines are used to achieve an efficient mapping of the algorithm on to the Intel Xeon Phi co-processor. Section 3 describes the preparation of the data used to train the DNN. Section 4 describes the implementation of the deep neural networks. Section 5 then presents results measuring the performance of a DNN. Finally in Section 6, we demonstrate the application of DNNs to backtesting using a walk forward methodology, and provide performance results for a simple buy-hold-sell strategy.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) Knows Its Hardware Era Is Over: Argus Research
In a research note issued today, Argus Research shed light on how Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is transforming from a hardware enterprise to a software- and services-focused business. The sell-side firm reiterated its Buy rating on AAPL stock, with a 135 price objective. AAPL stock rose 0.74% to trade 98.18, just before 10 AM EDT. Apple hosted its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 13, and used the forum to announce new capabilities for Siri, features for Apple Watch, and integration of third-party apps into iOS. No new hardware was introduced, and the tech giant did not address rumors of a second-source vendor--Intel--as a baseband supplier for the iPhone.

Ronny Kohavi is a Microsoft Distinguished Engineer and the General Manager for Microsoft's Analysis and Experimentation team at Microsoft's Applications and Services Group. He was previously Partner Architect at Bing, part of the Online Services Division at Microsoft. He joined Microsoft in 2005 and founded the Experimentation Platform team in 2006. His papers have over 27,000 citations and three of his papers are in the top 1,000 most-cited papers in Computer Science. In short, Ronny is the big kahuna of experimentation and I am very happy he took time to have this discussion with me.
