Machine Learning: Crunchflow is Partnering with USC Researchers to Explore New Frontiers in Big Data
Professor Soibelman and his research group at the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will have access to Crunchflow's large metadata database that has anonymous performance information from thousands of projects and employees allocated in professional service organizations. The researchers' mission is to find in this data preliminary patterns and results that help to understand how companies can boost efficiency levels. They also want to demonstrate the potential for extracting knowledge from such a database. Crunchflow's CEO Daniel Knijnik believes that the collaboration will place the company in the forefront of a technology that has the potential to revolutionize how artificial intelligence is applied to business. "We will have top researchers entirely dedicated to innovation, using the latest and most modern technology", he said.
An Interview with Dr. Vivienne Ming: Digital Disruptor, Scientist, Educator, AI Wizard…
During the recent Consumer Goods Forum global summit here in Cape Town, I had the opportunity to briefly chat with Vivienne about some of the issues confronting the digital disruption of this industry sector. [The original transcript has been edited for clarity and space.] Named one of 10 Women to Watch in Tech in 2013 by Inc. Magazine, Vivienne Ming is a theoretical neuroscientist, technologist and entrepreneur. She co-founded Socos, where machine learning and cognitive neuroscience combine to maximize students' life outcomes. Vivienne is a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley's Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, where she pursues her research in neuroprosthetics. In her free time, Vivienne has developed a predictive model of diabetes to better manage the glucose levels of her diabetic son and systems to predict manic episodes in bipolar suffers. She sits on the boards of StartOut, The Palm Center, Emozia, and the Bay Area Rainbow Daycamp, and is an advisor to Credit Suisse, Cornerstone Capital, and BayesImpact. Dr. Ming also speaks frequently on issues of LGBT inclusion and gender in technology. Every once in a while I have the opportunity to discuss wide-ranging topics with an intellect that stimulates, is passionate and really cares about the bigger picture. Those opportunities are more rare than one would think. Although set in a somewhat unexpected venue (the elite innards of consumer capitalism) her observations on the inescapable disruption that the new wave of modern technologies are prescient and thoughtful. Ed: In a continent where there is a large focus on putting people to work, how do you see the challenges and disruptions resulting from AI, robotics, IoT, VR and other technologies playing out? These technologies, as did other disruptive technologies before them, tend to replace human workers with machine processes. Vivienne: There is almost no domain in which artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and automation will not have a profound and positive impact. Medicine, farming, transportation, etc. will all benefit. There will be a huge impact on human potential, and human work will change. I think this is inevitable, that we are well on the way to this AI-enabled future.
Israeli machine-learning radiology firm Zebra Medical Vision raises 12m – MassDevice
Israeli machine-learning radiology firm Zebra Medical Vision said today it raised 12 million to support the development of imaging algorithms being designed for automatic reading and diagnosis of medical imaging data. The round was led by InterMountain Healthcare, and joined by existing investors, Zebra Medical Vision said. As part of its investment, InterMountain Healthcare plans to work with Zebra to accelerate its development. "We are privileged that 1 of the top healthcare systems in the U.S. has placed such confidence in our team and our platform. In an environment where computing power and machine learning frameworks are becoming a commodity, the ability to quickly and efficiently curate large quantities of data from a world class integrated healthcare provider can make the difference between simplistic tools and insights that can truly add clinical value and positively impact patient care," CEO Elad Benjamin said in a prepared statement.
Capital Health teams with startup MedyMatch for AI in stroke care
MedyMatch Technology, a startup from Israel that specializes in medical imaging analysis for emergency medicine, has its first U.S. hospital partner. Capital Health, a two-hospital system in New Jersey, will deploy MedyMatch's artificial intelligence-based analytics in the emergency department and help the Tel Aviv-based vendor develop a clinical decision support tool for stroke care. To accomplish the latter, Capital Health, based in Hopewell Township, New Jersey, has agreed to provide MedyMatch with anonymized data from patients, the organizations said Monday. "The data Capital Health will provide will allow us to move closer to providing this decision support tool which can help ensure appropriate diagnosis, critical for treatment," MedyMatch Chairman and CEO Gene Saragnese said in a prepared statement. Saragnese was CEO of Philips Imaging before joining the startup a year ago.

Many IT executives in North America currently have--or plan to have--machine learning programs in place, according to research. Predictive analytics and recommender systems are some of the leading implementations. Data from 451 Research and Blazent revealed that more than two-thirds (67.3%) of respondents said they currently have machine learning programs for predictive analytics in place, or are planning to implement them. Additionally, 66.7% said they are currently using machine learning for recommender systems--or are planning to. Furthermore, more than half (58.9%) of IT executives said they are using machine learning for cluster analysis and segmentation currently in place or plan to soon.
AI Fighter Pilot Beats a Human, But No Need to Panic (Really)
While Google was building an artificial intelligence that could beat a grandmaster at the ancient game of Go, researchers at the University of Cincinnati took a different tack. They designed an AI that could take on a fighter pilot. Dubbed ALPHA, this system recently beat retired United States Air Force Colonel Gene Lee in multiple flight simulator trials, as the researchers explain in a paper recently published in the Journal of Defense Management. The idea isn't to replace human fighter pilots. According to Nicholas Ernest, a University of Cincinnati alum and the founder of Psibernetix, a company that aims to commercialize the technology behind ALPHA, this AI may ultimately act as a kind of digital assistant that provides real-time advice to pilots.

KPMG will soon be using artificial intelligence for audits in Australia
KPMG plans to use IBM's Watson cognitive computing technology for its professional services in Australia. The artificial intelligence deal with IBM includes a focus on audit and assurance services. IBM's Watson has been doing everything from diagnosing cancer and recommending treatment to analysing the Harry Potter books and running online university courses. "Already, data and analytics techniques are transforming audit by allowing analysis of much bigger populations of data than traditional sampling from which to draw conclusions," says Duncan McLennan, KPMG's national managing partner of audit. "Cognitive technology will allow us to build on these data and analytics advances. They will be a game changer in how the value of audit is perceived by the marketplace."

The idea of a device that can materialize one's memories out of thin air seems like it could only exist in science fiction. But in a new study, researchers were able to pretty accurately sketch out the thoughts of participants simply by scanning their brains. It's helping scientists understand how memory works in the human brain, and it may be a first step toward the futuristic ability to read minds. Researchers at the University of Oregon showed a group of participants, all strapped into an MRI machine, a series of photos of human faces. They followed the participants' brain activity as they looked at each image, mapping neural activity to a code of numbers that correspond to the characteristics of each face.
