A.I. Could Hack Turing Test by Keeping Silent

The Turing test, the quintessential evaluation designed to determine if something is a computer or a human, may have a fatal flaw, new research suggests. The test currently can't determine if a person is talking to another human being or a robot if the person being interrogated simply chooses to stay silent, new research shows. While it's not news that the Turing test has flaws, the new study highlights just how limited the test is for answering deeper questions about artificial intelligence, said study co-author Kevin Warwick, a computer scientist at Coventry University in England. "As machines are getting more and more intelligent, whether they're actually thinking and whether we need to give them responsibilities are starting to become very serious questions," Warwick told Live Science. "Obviously, the Turing test is not the one which can tease them out." The now-famous Turing test was first described by British computer scientist Alan Turing in 1950 to address questions of when and how to determine if machines are sentient.

Y Combinator-backed Mosaic connects wearables, Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) bot maker Mosaic announced today that it has been selected for the Y Combinator summer program and has released a new beta version of its assistant on Amazon Alexa, Slack, SMS, and Facebook Messenger. Mosaic connects a single chatbot to more than a dozen wearables and IoT devices, ranging from lightbulbs to Tesla cars. Essentially, the chatbot takes all the data we compile in our personal lives and helps us make sense of it. Mosaic wants to give people advice based on all the data accumulated by wearables and internet-connected devices and can also explain things like water usage and how to get energy. In the future, Mosaic wants your fitness wearable to talk to you about personal fitness challenges, make sure you're getting enough sleep, and tell you when you need to exercise "This is definitely on our roadmap and one of the most interesting things we're going to do," said cofounder Sumang Liu.

Humans have been farming for thousands of years since the first crops were planted and animals began being domesticated during the Mesolithic era. But technology could soon be squeezing us out of our traditional roles as farmers, as robots take to the fields. A robot that is capable of herding cattle and pulling trailers through the mud has gone on trial at a farm in Australia while another capable of pick broccoli six times faster than humans is being tested in Britain. SwagBot, an Australian farming machine, can herd cattle and pull trailers through mud, is being developed at the University of Sydney. At the same time, the University of Lincoln is building and testing a robot that can pick broccoli six times faster than humans. It can identify broccoli in fields with up to 95 per cent accuracy, the researchers say.

NLP Logix Receives Recognition for Developing a Machine Learning Model that Helps Identify and Classify Cancer Cells

Computer-aided algorithms are helping pathologists more efficiently and accurately identify cancer stages to deliver targeted treatment. Jacksonville-based advanced data analytics and machine learning solutions company NLP Logix continues to lead the way in the emerging field of computer vision, receiving recognition as the only United States team to deliver a top-winning solution in an international competition to develop a machine learning model that can help identify and treat cancer cells by stage level. NLP Logix recently earned a top-three finish position in the HER2 Challenge, an academic research competition sponsored by the University of Warwick's Department of Computer Science. More than 100 data science teams worldwide competed in the challenge which asked applicants to create algorithms to automate "scoring" of large-file images of stained slides of breast cancer cells based on the aggressiveness of the cancer. The method is used to detect the presence of the gene for HER2, a transmembrane growth factor receptor which is found in about 20 percent of cases of invasive cancer.
