Slo-mo bot: How scientists built a biohybrid robot from slug parts

Scientists have developed what may be the slowest first responder ever. On Monday, researchers from Case Western Reserve University unveiled a "biohybrid" robot powered by sea slug muscles. The device, researchers say, could perform tasks that are difficult for traditional robots, and even take on search missions. "We're building a living machine โ€“ a biohybrid robot that's not completely organic, yet," said Victoria Webster, a PhD candidate who led the research, in a statement. Biorobotic philosophies โ€“ including, but not limited to the notion that "living machines" could perform tasks that aren't possible for organic organisms or totally man-made devices โ€“ have inspired new lines of research in many fields.

The human eye can detect a single photon, study finds

Your eyes may be more sensitive than you ever thought possible. In a study published Tuesday in Nature Communications, researchers report that our warm, wet, multicellular eyes have evolved such a high level of sensitivity that they can, on occasion, detect a single photon aimed at the retina. Even the most sophisticated man-made devices require a cool, temperature-controlled environment to achieve the same feat. A single photon is the the smallest particle that light is made of, and it is extremely hard to see. "It's not like a dim flash of light or anything like that," said Alipasha Vaziri, a quantum physicist at Rockefeller University in New York City and the senior author on the paper.

The Pokรฉmon Go game, using augmented reality and GPS, allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokรฉmon, who appear on device screens as though in the real world. As the game has taken over, so have the range of ways in which players can out think Pokรฉmon. This weekend saw Michael Hsu, a front and back-end developer and part-time university lecturer in California, win the Best Use of Watson challenge at the AT&T Shape Tech Expo Hackathon in San Francisco. "I saw the Watson Visual Recognition API and wondered, what if I could get Watson to play Pokรฉmon Go for me?"

Researchers have developed a new genetic scoring technique that explains almost 10 per cent of the differences between children's educational attainment by the age of 16-years-old. A DNA test could soon be used to predict how a child will do when they are at school after researchers found they can explain 10 per cent of a person's academic achievement by the age of 16-years-old by creating what is known as a polygenic score based on 74 genetic variants thought to play a role in educational performance The IQ test has long been dismissed as an inaccurate way to discern how intelligent a person really is - but now scientists may have found a better way. Researchers at the University of Warwick say MRI scans can measure human intelligence, and define exactly what it is.
