Machine learning is a method of data analysis that automates model building that allows computers to find hidden insights without being explicitly programmed to find a particular insight. Machine learning can be applied to data to help businesses quickly find clusters of similar objects (e.g., identify segments of customers) and to predict outcomes (e.g., identify customers who are at-risk of churning). While machine learning is a hot skill to possess, a recent study by Evans Data Corp. found that about a third of developers (36%) who are working on Big Data projects employ elements of machine learning.

How Reconnect Research is Resurrecting Telephone Research In The Age Of AI
My first job in market research was in 2001 as Director of Call Center Operations for a healthcare-focused MR firm. We did NCQA CAHPS studies using a rigid CATI sampling method, and we sold excess capacity as a field & tab provider for other research companies. We also were bidding on many government studies such as the CDC BRFSS, so I was receiving a crash course in sample theory and applying very hardcore probability sampling models to the studies we were conducting. I had come from a customer service call center operations management background, so I knew how useful IVR (Interactive Voice Response) could be and was exploring if there was a role for that technology in a research paradigm, and through that effort was recruited by my vendor, DialTek, to become their VP of Operations. DialTek did outbound (they still power the polling of Rasmussen Reports) and inbound (lots of satisfaction surveys when calling into a customer service line) IVR surveys, and during my time there we experimented with using it as a recruitment tool for qual, to build online panels, as a partial solution to streamline phone surveys, etc… In other words, I know the technology very well and understand the best uses cases for it.

Laundry detergent Top honored as essential historical material
The National Museum of Nature and Science on Tuesday added Lion Corp.'s enzyme-based laundry detergent Top to a list of important historical materials that have had an impact on Japanese lives and culture. Top, which first hit the market in 1979, was among 16 items honored with the designation by the Tokyo museum as "Essential Historical Materials for Science and Technology." With its protein-removing enzymes, the laundry detergent has been popular for its cleaning performance and environmentally friendly formula. Among the other products chosen to make the annual list this year were NEC Corp.'s PC-9801 16-bit personal computer, which debuted in 1982, and the Yagi-Uda antenna, the world's first directional ultrashort-wave antenna that is now used throughout the world in radios and televisions. The antenna, commonly known as the Yagi antenna, derives its name from one of its developers, Dr. Hidetsugu Yagi of Tohoku University.
Scientists look at how A.I. will change our lives by 2030
By the year 2030, artificial intelligence (A.I.) will have changed the way we travel to work and to parties, how we take care of our health and how our kids are educated. Focused on trying to foresee the advances coming to A.I., as well as the ethical challenges they'll bring, the panel yesterday released its first study. The 28,000-word report, "Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030," looks at eight categories -- from employment to healthcare, security, entertainment, education, service robots, transportation and poor communities -- and tries to predict how smart technologies will affect urban life. "We believe specialized A.I. applications will become both increasingly common and more useful by 2030, improving our economy and quality of life," Peter Stone, a computer scientist at the University of Texas at Austin and chair of the 17-member panel of international experts, said in a written statement. "But this technology will also create profound challenges, affecting jobs and incomes and other issues that we should begin addressing now to ensure that the benefits of A.I. are broadly shared."

TechCrunch breaks it down for us, saying that RankBrain is really ANI – artificial narrow intelligence, which is like, "AI for one particular thing (e.g. Last year, Google announced their new search software, RankBrain, that according to Bloomberg News, "Can make a guess as to what words or phrases might have a similar meaning and filter the result accordingly, making it more effective at handling never-before-seen search queries." While it may sound a little too Ex Machina for comfort, it's actually a pretty cool development.
