Salesforce Announces The Launch Of Its Einstein Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platform

The company has also gone on to announce the formation of Salesforce Research, a unit which will do the research in deep learning, natural language processing along with computer vision, which can be used, so as to improve Salesforce products. The unit which is led by Salesforce chief scientist Richard Socher, formerly Co-Founder and Chief Executive of AI startup MetaMind, which Salesforce acquired earlier this year. In a press briefing in San Francisco, earlier this week, Socher goes on to decline to make up a statement on how many people were part of the team, although he did go on to state that some of Salesforce's 175 data scientists have gone on to join the newly organized division.


iOS 10 Bedtime feature sets an alarm for when to sleep – but might lead to problems waking up

The new Bedtime feature is a new kind of alarm – meant not only to be set for when you wake up, but also when you should be going to sleep. It aims to make sure that people spend enough time in bed by alerting them to their sleep time, and analysing whether or not they're actually making it into bed on time. It's used by heading to the Clock app in iOS 10, where there is a new tab at the bottom. There, you'll get the option to add what time you want to wake up and then what time you want to go to sleep. This might be the first thing you notice, and it's probably the most significant change to your daily routine.

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

September is fast approaching and so is London Design Festival and the Digital Design Weekend! Now in its sixth year, the Digital Design Weekend will bring together again over a hundred artists, designers, engineers, technologists and of course the public to celebrate and share contemporary digital art and design, take part in interactive installations and labs, engage in conversations, and learn about processes. Over the weekend we will be taking over the Museum to showcase a huge programme of cutting edge, international digital projects, but also performances, talks, open workshops, labs and family-friendly activities, all exploring engineering, making and collaboration. The Weekend will include many protoyping events and workshops, such as the Open IoT Design Sprint with Mozilla Open IoT Studio & collaborators* to make & share prototypes that serve local communities & celebrate the unique affordances of physical places; a Biosynth workshop to introduce basic electronics and biology interactions by Andreas Siagian from Indonesia's Lifepatch; a Storm Laboratory with Loop.ph to experience the turbulent nature of geophysical air dynamics, as well as a hydroponic system workshop, a co-design performance workshop and many more. There is lots for young people and families to enjoy, including, a Build Your Own Pavilion Young Architects Challenge by the Serpentine Galleries and Kidesign challenging budding young architects to design the pavilions of the future; Scan the World by MyMiniFactory, inviting families to help scan the V&A's collections and see 3D printers in action; a Tanglebot workshop with unruly robots, wool, Lego and Raspberry PIs, as well as many family-friendly installations and other activities.

I got to talk to Jane Jacobs once, toward the end of her life, an interview that is mentioned, in its properly Lilliputian proportion, in Robert Kanigel's new biography, "Eyes on the Street: The Life of Jane Jacobs" (Knopf). She was one of three people I have met in a lifetime of meeting people who had an aura of sainthood about them, the others being Iona Opie, the British folklorist who collected children's rhymes, and I. F. Stone, the independent American journalist. What they had in common was a sort of radiant self-reliance. They could say an obvious thing--that children are citizens of another country, that all governments lie--with the conviction that comes from having really found it out. They spoke for many, because they thought for themselves. Iona Opie made hanging around schoolyards to find small variants in jumping-rope rhymes seem essential to understanding humanity, and Izzy Stone made you feel unpatriotic for not printing your own biweekly page of political commentary. The ability to radiate certainty without condescension, to be both very sure and very simple, is a potent one, and witnessing it in life explains a lot in history that might otherwise be inexplicable--for instance, how a sixteen-year-old girl could lead the French Army to victory. Jane Jacobs's aura was so powerful that it made her, precisely, the St. Joan of the small scale. Her name still summons an entire city vision--the much watched corner, the mixed-use neighborhood--and her holy tale is all the stronger for including a nemesis of equal stature: Robert Moses, the Sauron of the street corner. The New York planning dictator wanted to drive an expressway through lower Manhattan, and was defeated, the legend runs, by this ordinary mom.

Glass of beer 'makes people more sociable'

Researchers from Switzerland have confirmed what most of us already know - drinking a single glass of beer can make people more sociable. The team from University Hospital in Basel tested 60 healthy people, with an equal number of men and women drinking alcoholic and non-alcoholic beer. They took part in a range of tasks, including a face recognition test, empathy test and sexual arousal test. The lead researcher said there had been little previous research in this area. Prof Matthias Liechti explained: "Although many people drink beer and know its effects through personal experience there is surprisingly little scientific data on its effects on the processing of emotional social information."


On the Geometric Ergodicity of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo

We establish general conditions under which Markov chains produced by the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method will and will not be geometrically ergodic. We consider implementations with both position-independent and position-dependent integration times. In the former case we find that the conditions for geometric ergodicity are essentially a non-vanishing gradient of the log-density which asymptotically points towards the centre of the space and does not grow faster than linearly. In an idealised scenario in which the integration time is allowed to change in different regions of the space, we show that geometric ergodicity can be recovered for a much broader class of tail behaviours, leading to some guidelines for the choice of this free parameter in practice.


Geometrically Convergent Distributed Optimization with Uncoordinated Step-Sizes

A recent algorithmic family for distributed optimization, DIGing's, have been shown to have geometric convergence over time-varying undirected/directed graphs. Nevertheless, an identical step-size for all agents is needed. In this paper, we study the convergence rates of the Adapt-Then-Combine (ATC) variation of the DIGing algorithm under uncoordinated step-sizes. We show that the ATC variation of DIGing algorithm converges geometrically fast even if the step-sizes are different among the agents. In addition, our analysis implies that the ATC structure can accelerate convergence compared to the distributed gradient descent (DGD) structure which has been used in the original DIGing algorithm.
