On 19 September the chief executive of the Law Society, Catherine Dixon, delivered a keynote address at the International Bar Association conference in Washington DC. The Law Society is the professional body that represents more than 170,000 solicitors in England and Wales. Our vision is to be valued and trusted as a vital partner to represent, promote and support solicitors while upholding the rule of law, legal independence, ethical values and the principle of justice for all. We also fulfil an important public interest function which aims to ensure access to justice, protect human rights and freedoms and uphold the rule of law. As part of our work to develop our strategy, we published a piece of research to identify what the future will bring for the legal profession.

They were dismissed as stupid and primitive by the archaeologists who first studied their fossilised bones, but it seems Neanderthals may have been just as chatty as our own species. Researchers have discovered evidence that suggests Neanderthals may have used vocal communication just like our own species Homo sapiens. They used 3D scans to analyse the delicate ear bones from both the fossilised remains of Neanderthals and modern humans. Scientists have found evidence that suggests Neanderthals (reconstruction pictured) may have communicated vocally in similar ways to modern humans. Using highly detailed'micro-CT' scans they were able to reconstruct how the ear bones, or ossicles, would have functioned when Neanderthals were alive.


Researchers develop machine-learning program that helps identify hundreds of ASD-related genes

Investigators eager to uncover the genetic basis of autism could now have hundreds of promising new leads thanks to a study by Princeton University and Simons Foundation researchers. In the first effort of its kind, the research team developed a machine-learning program that scoured the whole human genome to predict which genes may contribute to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results of the program's analyses -- a rogue's gallery of 2,500 candidate genes -- vastly expand on the 65 autism-risk genes currently known. Researchers have recently estimated that 400 to 1,000 genes underpin the complex neurodevelopmental disorder. This newest research provides a manageable, "highly enriched" pool from which to pin down the full suite of ASD-related genes, the researchers said.

Robots' potential to take over the world is a commonly expressed fear in the world of AI, but at least one Turing Award winner doesn't see it happening that way. Rather than replacing mankind, technology will create a new kind of human that will coexist with its predecessors while taking advantage of new tech-enabled tools. So argued Raj Reddy, former founding director of Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute and 1994 winner of the Turing Award, at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Germany last week. "I could not have predicted much of what has happened in AI," Reddy told an audience of journalists at a press conference. "Four or five things happened in AI in the last decade that I didn't think would happen in my lifetime," including achievements in language translation and AI's triumph at the game of Go.
