For the study, published in PeerJ Computer Science, researchers set a machine-learning algorithm loose on 584 cases and found that the AI could learn to predict the rulings in those cases with a relatively high percentage of accuracy. But if you're getting really excited about working with computer-lawyer-physic software in the future, well, there are a few caveats. Those 584 cases were all from the European Court of Human Rights and the analysis was based on published judgments. The program was learning to guess outcomes in a narrow class of cases, after they had already been decided. Still, the research is interesting.

And it appears that the future may extend the ways to use technology to find love even further. A new study suggests that by 2026, smart home devices, including your toaster and wardrobe, could help you find love. As for smart wardrobes, eHarmony's research indicates clothing style is actually an extremely precise and detailed reflection of a person's personality. Smart appliances such as fridges, toasters, coffee makers and cooking devices could reveal a large amount of information about our diet, meal times and even spontaneity when choosing or preparing food.

Sophos has announced the acquisition of Irish security firm Barricade, adding behavior-based analytics to its endpoint offering. Barricade offer a technology platform that it claims can enhance the ability to identify malicious or suspicious behaviour by using machine learning and artificial intelligence. It said that this works by extending the capabilities of rule-based detection technologies, that will be increasingly challenged to keep up with the growth of sophisticated and complex attack patterns. Sophos will maintain the offices in the Republic of Ireland with Barricade CEO David Coallier and the team of developers, data scientists and engineers joining the Sophos Cloud group. Coallier said: "We are proud of the technology we have built and are pleased to join the team at Sophos focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning based security analytics. Driving the development of our technology into a comprehensive security solution that every IT professional can use presents us with the next phase in our exciting journey."

The rules first appeared in his short story "Runaround" (1942). Quoting from the "Handbook of Robotics, 56th Edition, 2058 A.D.", the laws are: Whilst these laws are broadly acceptable for a robot, they are too narrow for an Artificial General Intelligence. An artificial General Intelligence must deal with scenarios that go beyond physical interaction with humans.

Artificial Lawyer caught up recently with Dan Rubins, the Founder and CEO – and also the CTO – of Legal Robot, one of the new breed of AI-driven document review start-ups. We discussed how he moved from working in a medical services company to joining the fray as a legal AI pioneer, how working on smart contracts may be where the company eventually ends up and why there's a big world of opportunity out there. The San Francisco-based founder of Legal Robot, Dan Rubins, is not a lawyer by background. But, his experiences have taught him a lot about the inefficiencies of document review, while his long term interest in technology and programming has also helped. Perhaps, most fundamentally, Rubins is a self-proclaimed engineer.

There is no consistent definition of digitization. Every industry and every department perceive it and react differently. How would you define digitization with respect to your industry? Michael Wei: Digitization has been the major shifting force for the last 4 decades, and it will continue to be a critical force in the next several decades ahead of us. The scope and impact are substantially wider than what we perceive, that's where I think the inconsistency comes from – each player stems from its own roots to look at digitization and has reached a definition from a partial view.

Have you seen sci-fi movies like A.I. Artificial Intelligence, a 2001 US science fiction drama directed by Steven Spielberg that portrays a childlike android programmed to love, or Bicentennial Man, which starred the late Robin Williams and was based on a 1976 novel by Isaac Asimov? Have you seen the movie Surrogates which starred Bruce Willis and portrayed a futuristic world where people live within the safety of their homes while their robotic surrogates carry on their daily chores? If yes, you are also likely to believe that machines endowed with artificial intelligence (AI) can emulate, or even surpass, human intelligence. However, nothing can be further from the truth, say researchers. "The frightening, futurist portrayals of artificial intelligence that dominate films and novels, and shape the popular imagination, are fictional… Unlike in the movies, there is no race of superhuman robots on the horizon or probably even possible," insists a Stanford University-hosted report.

Q3 is generally provide limited visibility given vacations and schedules especially in Europe. And I had spoken about Brexit on the last call and I'm pleased to say that concerns have not materialized with the exception of currency of course. And I'm pleased to see the continued progress we're making towards having less lumpy quarters despite the inherent lumpiness of this business, even in the face of those currency headwinds. Those currency headwinds caught a couple of points off of our results.

China's fastest supercomputers have some clear goals, namely development of its artificial intelligence, robotics industries and military capability, says the U.S. But some of the early iterations of this effort seem a little weird. China recently deployed what it calls a "security robot" in a Shenzhen airport. It's named AnBot and patrols around the clock. Here's what AnBot looks like, according to a Chinese government newspaper, The People's Daily online.
