Classification with Ultrahigh-Dimensional Features

Although much progress has been made in classification with high-dimensional features \citep{Fan_Fan:2008, JGuo:2010, CaiSun:2014, PRXu:2014}, classification with ultrahigh-dimensional features, wherein the features much outnumber the sample size, defies most existing work. This paper introduces a novel and computationally feasible multivariate screening and classification method for ultrahigh-dimensional data. Leveraging inter-feature correlations, the proposed method enables detection of marginally weak and sparse signals and recovery of the true informative feature set, and achieves asymptotic optimal misclassification rates. We also show that the proposed procedure provides more powerful discovery boundaries compared to those in \citet{CaiSun:2014} and \citet{JJin:2009}. The performance of the proposed procedure is evaluated using simulation studies and demonstrated via classification of patients with different post-transplantation renal functional types.


Submodular Optimization under Noise

We consider the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function under noise. There has been a great deal of work on optimization of submodular functions under various constraints, resulting in algorithms that provide desirable approximation guarantees. In many applications, however, we do not have access to the submodular function we aim to optimize, but rather to some erroneous or noisy version of it. This raises the question of whether provable guarantees are obtainable in presence of error and noise. We provide initial answers, by focusing on the question of maximizing a monotone submodular function under a cardinality constraint when given access to a noisy oracle of the function. We show that: - For a cardinality constraint $k \geq 2$, there is an approximation algorithm whose approximation ratio is arbitrarily close to $1-1/e$; - For $k=1$ there is an algorithm whose approximation ratio is arbitrarily close to $1/2$. No randomized algorithm can obtain an approximation ratio better than $1/2+o(1)$; -If the noise is adversarial, no non-trivial approximation guarantee can be obtained.

At 2:40 a.m., my phone woke me up. At least one of us was always on shift, and that night in September of 2010, I had volunteered to respond to automated text messages from our alert system. As a graduate student at the time, I (Jonah) had helped build the first quick-response alert software pipeline for two gravitational-wave observatories, called LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) and Virgo. This system was designed to search for astrophysical signals in data as it arrived, to alert people who could check if a signal seemed valid, and share the message with astronomers around the world if needed. Every alert carried the possibility of a positive detection--humanity's first direct observation of waves traveling through the fabric of spacetime, predicted by Einstein in 1916. I got out of bed and made a sleepy-eyed walk to the small workstation we kept in our apartment. I didn't know it, but the alert was the beginning of a professional and emotional rollercoaster. I logged into our event database and started browsing plots. The plots showed an unusually loud signal.

Activision Blizzard heads into Friday's release of its blockbuster video game franchise Call of Duty on a roll. The arrival of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, expected to be the biggest-selling video game of the year, comes just hours after the Santa Monica, Calif.-based game publisher Thursday reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings. Activision Blizzard, the No. 1 U.S. game publisher, reported earnings per share of 26 cents, compared to 17 cents in the July-September period a year ago.

Professor Yann LeCun is a force to be reckoned with in the world of artificial intelligence. With approximately 20 years in the field, the director of Facebook's AI lab has authored over 180 academic papers. One of his most notable pieces of work came in 1988, when he helped to develop a piece of AI software known as a "convolutional neural network" that could recognise handwritten numbers. Trained on a data set of thousands of characters, this revolutionary system detected visual patterns directly from the pixel. Essentially, it let computers open their eyes and use data to learn on their own.

Will AI replace judges and lawyers?

An artificial intelligence method developed by University College London computer scientists and associates has predicted the judicial decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with 79% accuracy, according to a paper published Monday, Oct. 24 in PeerJ Computer Science. The method is the first to predict the outcomes of a major international court by automatically analyzing case text using a machine-learning algorithm.* "We don't see AI replacing judges or lawyers," said Nikolaos Aletras, who led the study at UCL Computer Science, "but we think they'd find it useful for rapidly identifying patterns in cases that lead to certain outcomes. It could also be a valuable tool for highlighting which cases are most likely to be violations of the European Convention on Human Rights." In developing the method, the team found that judgments by the ECtHR are highly correlated to non-legal (real-world) facts, rather than direct legal arguments, suggesting that judges of the Court are, in the jargon of legal theory, "realists" rather than "formalists."

Having seen Activision Blizzard's stock hit all-time highs in recent days --topping out with an intraday high Oct. 25 of $45.55 -- Wall Street analysts expect the No. 1 U.S. game publisher to surpass its own forecasts of Q3 revenue of $1.49 billion and earnings of 6 cents per share. Analysts polled by S&P Global Market Intelligence expect $1.56 billion and 8 cents per share.
