Meet BALLU, UCLA's Humanoid Blimp Robot

IEEE Spectrum Robotics

The 2016 IEEE International Conference on Humanoid Robots kicks off today. It's taking place at the Westin Resort & Spa Cancun, which sounds awful, but at least there are some cool new robots, and one of the coolest has to be BALLU, from Dennis Hong at UCLA's Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa). BALLU, or Buoyancy Assisted Lightweight Legged Unit (Professor Hong loves a good acronym), is a humanoid-ish robot with a body made of helium balloons and a pair of thin articulated legs. Since it weighs next to nothing, it never falls over, and can walk, hop, and perform a variety of other useful bipedal motions as long as you don't take it outside on a windy day. "To get creative ideas, sometimes we ask ourselves crazy, ridiculous questions," Hong told us.

5 EBooks to Read Before Getting into A Machine Learning Career

#artificialintelligence

Don't know where to start? If you are looking for something more, you could look here for an overview of MOOCs and online lectures from freely-available university lectures. Of course, nothing substitutes rigorous formal education, but let's say that isn't in the cards for whatever reason. Not all machine learning positions require a PhD; it really depends where on the machine learning spectrum one wants to fit in. Check out this motivating and inspirational post, the author of which went from little understanding of machine learning to actively and effectively utilizing techniques in their job within a year.

Humanity and AI will be inseparable, says CMU's Head of Machine Learning Verge 2021

#artificialintelligence

One of the big trends we've seen over the last five years is automation. At the same time, we're also seeing more intelligence built into tools we already have, like phones and computers. Where do you see this process in five years? In the future, I believe that there will be a co-existence between humans and artificial intelligence systems that will be hopefully of service to humanity. These AI systems will involve software systems that handle the digital world, and also systems that move around in physical space, like drones, and robots, and autonomous cars, and also systems that process the physical space, like the Internet of Things. You will have more intelligent systems in the physical world, too -- not just on your cell phone or computer, but physically present around us, processing and sensing information about the physical world and helping us with decisions that include knowing a lot about features of the physical world.

A milestone for laser sensors in self-driving cars โ€“ OSRAM Group Website

LIDAR sensors are an essential element in future fully autonomous or semi-autonomous self-driving cars. The system operates on the principle of time-of-flight measurement. A very short laser pulse is transmitted, hits an object, is reflected and detected by a sensor. From the time-of-flight of the laser beam it is possible to calculate the distance to the object. Scanning LIDAR systems scan the surroundings of the car horizontally with a laser beam across a certain angular segment and produce a high-resolution 3D map of the environment.

Pluto's strange spin points to a subsurface sea and could be hiding an OCEAN

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Pluto's icy heart may be hiding a subsurface ocean. Two new papers, based on observations from Nasa's New Horizons probe, claim that a frozen nitrogen pile-up in the dwarf planet's iconic heart-shaped region may have altered Pluto's tilt. This caused its spin to change which may have also created cracks and tensions in the crust of the dwarf planet that point towards the presence of a hidden sea, which scientists have previously said may host alien life. Two new papers, based on observations from Nasa's New Horizons probe, have proposed evidence of a frozen nitrogen pile-up throwing Pluto off its kilter. The cracks that have formed in the dwarf planet's surface as a result of this shift could point to a subsurface ocean, which scientists have previously said could host alien life In the first paper, researchers suggest a liquid ocean lying deep beneath Pluto's frozen surface is the best explanation for features revealed by the New Horizons probe.

Stockholm-based Now Interact has raised $5 million A round from SEB Venture Capital, Inventure, and Industrifonden to develop the product and drive U.S. expansion. Now Interact says it has created the first platform that optimizes the bridge between online and offline channels, including the contact center, telesales and bricks & mortar stores. Businesses can better leverage data to deliver a more personalized customer experience, generate maximum profit, and accelerate the digitalization of sales and service. SEB s investment in Now Interact can be seen as part of the bank s ongoing digital transformation, while Inventure is a leading early-stage venture capital firm in the region which supports early-stage entrepreneurs in the region in expanding their businesses globally. "We are very excited about the opportunity that Now Interact presents to the market as we believe that Artificial Intelligence is about to redefine how companies interact with their online visitors. Now Interact has created an advanced platform that will change the way users flow from online to offline channels," said Ulf Lewander of SEB.
