What can your face say about you? Face recognition technology can pick up on things like your age, gender and maybe even your mood. Now, two researchers say it could even tell whether you're a criminal. They are claiming to have developed a system that, when shown a series of faces it has never encountered before, can pick out the ones belonging to convicted criminals. But other researchers have criticised the results, and say the work raises ethical questions over what face recognition technology can and should be used to detect.

A classical music dataset released Wednesday by University of Washington researchers -- which enables machine learning algorithms to learn the features of classical music from scratch -- raises the likelihood that a computer could expertly finish the job. MusicNet is the first publicly available large-scale classical music dataset with curated fine-level annotations. It's designed to allow machine learning researchers and algorithms to tackle a wide range of open challenges -- from note prediction to automated music transcription to offering listening recommendations based on the structure of a song a person likes, instead of relying on generic tags or what other customers have purchased. "At a high level, we're interested in what makes music appealing to the ears, how we can better understand composition, or the essence of what makes Bach sound like Bach. It can also help enable practical applications that remain challenging, like automatic transcription of a live performance into a written score," said Sham Kakade, a UW associate professor of computer science and engineering and of statistics.

One of Silicon Valley's most idiosyncratic players -- the Mozilla Foundation -- just reported a 28% leap in revenue for 2015, to $421 million, with cash flow more than tripling, to about $80 million. Asia-based senior executives at global companies believe that the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics on their business performance in Asia will be profound and positive--and will be felt sooner than we may think. Outside of global robotics industry leaders Korea and Japan, most of Asia currently lacks the depth of technical skills and R&D facilities needed to keep pace with AI development. However, China, India, and other large Asian economies generate a copious amount of data, a tremendous "natural resource" that is critical to pushing AI's capabilities forward. Ironically, given the commonly held view that AI will be responsible for disintermediation of jobs at all levels, it is Asia's massive human capital dividend--the billions of constantly Internet-connected workers and consumers--that will propel AI development in the region farther and faster. MIT Technology Review's International Markets division surveyed more than 60 Asia-based senior executives to gather perspective on the impact of AI and robotics on Asia's business landscape.

Apple Maps has gotten much better since its 2012 launch, but it still isn't quite as built out as Google's rival Google Maps. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is said to be using the aerial robots as well as some indoor navigation tech to improve its app to better compete with Google. Apple, like Google and Microsoft's Bing, currently uses cars equipped with cameras and sensors to travel and record mapping data. By switching to drones the company could conceivably record this data faster and thus more quickly update and improve Maps. More specifically, Apple is said to want to use the drones to examine street signs, monitor road changes as well as see if areas are under construction, according to the report.
