Variations on Memetic Algorithms for Graph Coloring Problems

Given an undirected graph G (V, E) with V a set of vertices and E a set of edges, graph vertex coloring involves assigning each vertex with a color so that two adjacent vertices (linked by an edge) feature different colors. The Graph Vertex Coloring Problem (GVCP) consists in finding the minimum number of colors, called chromatic number ฯ‡(G), required to color the graph G while respecting these binary constraints. The GVCP is a well-documented and much-studied problem because this simple formalization can be applied to various issues such as frequency assignment problems [1, 2], scheduling problems [3, 4, 5] and flight level allocation problems [6, 7]. Most problems that involve sharing a rare resource (colors) between different operators (vertices) can be modeled as a GVCP.

Machine Learning in Microsoft Translation A.I. is Out of 'Star Trek'

Microsoft has taken some inspiration from Star Trek. The company announced Tuesday a program called Microsoft Translator that listens to someone, transcribes what they've said, and then shares the translated text with their audience. The system is kind of like the universal translator from the most (or second-most, depending on who you ask) influential sci-fi series. It even speaks Klingon -- Microsoft Translate supports 60 languages for speech-to-text translation, and the one used by an alien species is apparently one of them. Microsoft said that its translator can work with up to 100 people at once, even if they're split between multiple languages, just as well as it can facilitate communications between two people.

ARM tackles server compatibility issues with Allinea acquisition

ARM servers are devalued partly because many applications don't work with the chips. But ARM has acquired Allinea Software with the hope of partially resolving the compatibility issue. Allinea provides software development, debugging, and porting tools, which should make it easier for people to write applications for ARM-based servers and supercomputers. The acquisition will "provide a channel to thousands of developers using supercomputers and give us better first-hand knowledge of the issues being addressed as software is ported to new ARM-based systems," Javier Orensanz, general manager of the development solutions group at ARM, said in a blog entry. The development tools will also be used for ARM chips in deep-learning systems, which require large-scale server deployments for analytics. ARM's competition will come from deep-learning and HPC software tools offered by Intel, Nvidia, Google, Microsoft, and more recently, AMD.

A dwarf planet in our own solar system might once have supported life, scientists have said. Ceres, a mysterious rocky planet in the asteroid belt between Mars ad Jupiter, has a rich body of ice beneath its dark surface, according to scientists. The discoveries were reported in a pair of studies published in the journals Science and Nature Astronomy. The scientists behind them hope that they could help commercial endeavours to mine water and other resources from asteroids, and to send humans out beyond the moon.
