AI 'Inevitable,' Retraining Needed, Survey Finds
Much debated concerns about the impact artificial intelligence on the global workforce are again highlighted in a new study on AI adoption, but so too are worries among CIOs who worry they lack the in-house skills to deploy and manage machine intelligence. A survey of about 1,600 senior managers released this week at the World Economic Forum by IT services specialist Infosys Ltd. (NYSE: INFY) seeks to explore the cultural impact of AI along with near-time applications and implications. Survey respondents who have already deployed the technology said they are primarily using it to automate mundane business processes as a way of saving money and boosting productivity. Overall, however, more than half of all respondents (54 percent) said the biggest challenge to adopting AI remains "employee fear of change" along with an equal number who cited lack of skills required to manage deployments. Those findings appear to reinforce the need for employee retraining to simultaneously oversee the automation technology while boosting job security among the ranks of IT workers.
Fast talkers AREN'T more effective communicators
A researcher has found that men convey more information than women at the same speech rate. Dr Uriel Cohen Priva, a psychology professor at Brown University the author of the research, also found that whether we speak slowly or quickly, we still end up communicating information at about the same rate. Slow talkers tend to use rarer, more unexpected words and fast talkers speak with more common words. Men conveyed more information than women at the same speech rate because women may tend to be more concerned with making sure their listeners understand what they're saying The research, published in the journal Cognition, suggests we tend to converse with a narrow channel of communication so that we don't convey too much or too little information at a time. In the field of information theory, rarer word choices and complicated syntax conveys more information.
Galaxy Note 7 explosion chaos inspires fire-extinguishing batteries
A team of researchers at Stanford University has created a lithium-ion battery designed to extinguish itself if it ever overheated and caught fire. The battery contains flame retardant chemical compound triphenyl phosphate (TPP), which sits inside a shell within the electrolyte fluid. The shell melts at 150C (302F), releasing the TPP and thereby eliminating any risk of a full-blown fire. In tests cited by the research, published in the journal Science Advances, the burning battery extinguished itself after 0.4 seconds. Will Artificial Intelligence Have a Major Impact on B2B Marketing?
B2B marketing executives say artificial intelligence (AI) will have a significant impact on their marketing efforts in the next five years, but most say they still do not have a firm understanding of the technology, according to recent research from Demandbase. The report was based on data from a survey of 500 B2B marketing executives who work for firms with 250 or more employees. Some 80% of respondents say AI will revolutionize marketing by 2020. However, only 26% of respondents say they are very confident they understand how AI is used in marketing, and only 10% say their company is using AI as part of its marketing efforts. B2B marketing executives expect the top challenges of AI will be integrating it into their existing systems/technologies (60% cite it as an issue) and training employees on how to use it (54%).
Is 2017 the Chinese year of AI?
This year, China looks set to make larger waves than ever in artificial intelligence and augmented reality. The nation's search giant, Baidu, is leading the charge. Already making serious headway in AI research, it has now announced that former Microsoft executive Qi Lu will take over as its chief operating officer. Lu ran the applications and services division at Microsoft, but, according to the Verge, a large part of his remit was developing strategies for artificial intelligence and chatbots. In a statement, Baidu cites hiring Lu as part of its plan to become a "global leader in AI."
Artificial intelligence can now predict heart failure, and that may save lives
An artificial intelligence system has accurately predicted when patients with heart conditions will die, according to new results published in the journal Radiology. The study was conducted by a team of scientists at the London Institute of Medical Services, who trained the software to analyze blood tests and intricate 3D models of beating hearts in order to detect signs of failure. The AI was assigned 256 patients diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, a type of high blood pressure which impacts the lungs and can cause dizziness, fainting, and shortness of breath. By tracking the movement of 30,000 different points on a patient's heart, it was able to construct an intricate 3D scan of the organ. Combining these models with patient health records going back eight years, the system could learn which abnormalities signaled a patient's approaching death, making predictions about five years into the future.
Eugene Cernan, the last man on the moon, hailed as a 'patriot and a pioneer'
January 17, 2017 --Eugene "Gene" Cernan, the last human to walk on the moon, passed away Monday at the age of 82. The former astronaut played an important role in America's space program during the height of the Cold War. In addition to being one of only 12 people to have set foot on the moon, he was also only the second American to complete a successful spacewalk during a Gemini mission. On Dec. 11, 1972, Mr. Cernan and fellow astronaut Harrison Schmitt stepped onto the moon for the first time, an experience that he later said in his biography made him no longer belong "solely to the Earth," but "to the universe." But as he touched the moon, his transmission to Houston in the moment was more awestruck: "Oh, my golly. Before becoming an astronaut, Cernan was a pilot with the US Navy. He found himself on the backup crew for Gemini 9, along with Thomas Stafford, until the primary crew was tragically killed in a plane crash before launch. With Gemini 9, Cernan became the third person in the world to complete a successful spacewalk. His 2 hours and 9 minutes spent outside the capsule was a record stretch in 1966. Cernan's first trip to the moon happened in May 1969, during the Apollo 10 mission, though it would be over three years until he actually set foot on the lunar surface. Apollo 10 was a dress rehearsal of sorts, taking measurements from orbit and testing various essential procedures that would be needed for the first actual moon landing with Apollo 11. "I keep telling Neil Armstrong that we painted that white line in the sky all the way to the Moon down to 47,000 feet so he wouldn't get lost, and all he had to do was land," Cernan said in a 2007 interview with NASA. "Made it sort of easy for him." With Apollo 17, Cernan finally got his chance to explore the lunar surface. Over the course of the mission, Cernan and Schmitt travelled 19 miles (30 km) across the lunar surface on a rover, gathering over 220 pounds (100 kg) of moon rocks to bring home for further study. At one point, he traced the letters TDC, the initials of his daughter, on the lunar surface. But when the time came to leave, Cernan, the last man on the moon, was reluctant to leave. "Those steps up that ladder, they were tough to make," he said. "I didn't want to go up.
Hiring a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO)
Artificial intelligence has wide-reaching implications across all aspects of the business, and now some leaders in the field advocate for this technology to be represented in the C-suite by a chief artificial intelligence officer (CAIO). Andrew Ng, a renowned A.I. researcher and thought leader, recently made that argument in Harvard Business Review article titled "Hiring Your First Chief A.I. Officer." Summarizing his case, Ng wrote, "The benefit of a chief A.I. officer is having someone who can make sure A.I. gets applied across silos." Since every aspect of a business involves the collection and use of data for competitive advantage, a CAIO could look across an organization and assess how different business units can work together to create new competitive advantages. On September 4, 2015, 17-year old Kenney Bui's coach removed him from his Seattle high-school team's football game with a mild concussion. Thirteen days later, a doctor cleared him to play. At a game a few weeks after that, on October 2, Bui took another hit, walked off the field showing signs of confusion, and while athletic trainers asked him questions from the school district's standardized concussion screening protocol, he closed his eyes. He never opened them again. Bui was one of six high schoolers to die on the football field in 2015 from a traumatic brain injury, but every year millions of people suffer milder concussions while playing sports.
