Bernard Meltzer, Obituary
Born in South Africa, he was educated at the South African College High School, took a first degree at the University of Cape Town in 1934 and a doctorate in Mathematical Physics at the University of London in 1953. After a spell as demonstrator in physics at Cape Town, he emigrated to Britain. Prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, he undertook ionospheric research in Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company, transferring to the Government's Telecommunications Research Establishment after the outbreak of hostilities to carry out research on radar. In 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, leaving in 1943 to go to Aberdeen University to run a special degree course for radio officers under the wartime Hankey Scheme. After the war was over, he returned to industrial research, first until 1949 in Mullard's Radio Valve Company on microwave electronics and then on television and photo-electric tubes at EMI's Research Laboratories.

Not all of them, certainly, and not overnight, but it's happening, and with this in mind researchers have begun exploring a potentially touchy subject in the workplace of the future: what happens when a robot tells you what to do? As it turns out, good things. A new study simulating a production line staffed by humans and robots has found that not only are we comfortable taking orders from robots, but that we actively prefer it, believing that robotic guidance increases efficiency and removes the problem of ego from the command chain. "In our research we were seeking to find that sweet spot for ensuring that the human workforce is both satisfied and productive," Matthew Gombolay, lead author on the study conducted by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) told MIT News. "We discovered that the answer is to actually give machines more autonomy, if it helps people to work together more fluently with robot teammate."

SAN FRANCISCO, June 9 (Reuters) - Apple Inc announced a series of long-awaited enhancements to its App Store on Wednesday, but the new features may not ease concerns of developers and analysts who say that the App Store model - and the very idea of the single-purpose app - has seen its best days. The revamped App Store will let developers advertise their wares in search results and give developers a bigger cut of revenues on subscription apps, while Apple said it has already dramatically sped up its app-approval process. The goal is to sustain the virtuous cycle at the heart of the hugely lucrative iPhone business. Software developers make apps for the iPhone because its customers are willing to pay, and those customers, in turn, pay a premium for the device because it has the best apps. The store is now more strategically important than ever for Apple as sales of the iPhone begin to level off and the company looks to software and services to fill the gap.

Some problems can be solved by representing the world in the initial state, and then for each action we can perform on the world we generate states for what the world would be like if we did so. If you do this until the world is in the state that we specified as a solution, then the route from the start to this goal state is the solution to your problem. In this tutorial I will look at the use of state space search to find the shortest path between two points (pathfinding), and also to solve a simple sliding tile puzzle (the 8-puzzle).
Nuance's Voice Recognition Software Deployed at Providence Health & Services' Hospitals, Clinics
Nuance Communications, Inc. announced today that Providence Health & Services is deploying Dragon Medical 360 Network Edition across its healthcare enterprise, making medical voice recognition available at 27 hospitals and 250 clinics for approximately 8,000 clinicians. According to a news release, Providence Health & Services is ranked by Thomson Reuters as among the top 20 percent of best-performing health systems in the country. The organization-wide use of Dragon Medical will help Providence roll out the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system by letting clinical staff document and navigate the EHR simply by speaking, saving time and allowing them to be more efficient and effective. Over the next year, Dragon Medical will be integrated with Epic and once fully deployed, clinicians will be able to use the just by using their voice, leading to faster EHR system adoption and improved physician satisfaction with EHR use, the press release claims. "Dragon Medical builds upon our current Nuance-driven background speech workflow through eScription and will give physicians more documentation options," said Laureen O'Brien, chief information officer, Providence Health & Services.

He made contributions of crucial international significance in three distinct fields of endeavour. During the second world war, he developed code-breaking techniques which led to effective automatic deciphering of German high-level ciphers. In the 1950s, he worked with Anne on pioneering techniques which were fundamental in the development of in vitro fertilisation. Donald subsequently became one of the founders of the field of artificial intelligence, an area to which he devoted the remainder of his academic career. It was within this field that I came to know Donald as an inspirational supervisor of my PhD at Edinburgh - not only insightful, forceful and even heroic, but possessing a wicked sense of humour.

Founded as a quirky Californian startup in the 1980s, the company has gone from producing AutoCAD design software for 8-bit PCs to speculating on the future of programmable lifeforms. "We are now looking at life as a design space," says Olguin when we meet in London, in between his hectic tour of synthetic biology research outfits.
