Bezos Says Artificial Intelligence to Fuel Amazon's Success
Amazon.com Inc. is embracing artificial intelligence to deliver goods more quickly, enhance its voice-activated Alexa assistant and create new tools sold to others through its cloud-computing division, Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said in his annual shareholder letter. Changes ushered in by artificial intelligence and machine learning will help the companies that embrace them and put up barriers for those who don't, the world's second- richest man wrote in a 1,700-word letter released Wednesday. Bezos repeated familiar themes, such as the need to operate a business like it's always "Day 1" to keep a startup mentality and the ability to act quickly on limited information to stay ahead, what he calls "high-velocity decision making." His emphasis on artificial intelligence and machine learning was the most concrete indication of areas in which the e-commerce giant will continue to invest. Machine learning is the science of getting computers to act without being programmed, and is used in autonomous cars, speech-recognition and internet search engines.

Amazon helps parents make conversation with their children with new Fire for Kids features
Amazon has added two new features to its Fire for Kids service, both of which are designed to help parents make conversation with their children. Discussion Cards suggest a number of questions for parents to ask their children, based on the apps, books, videos and games they've been accessing on Amazon Fire for Kids. Examples for Billionaire Boy, a story about the richest boy in the country's struggle to make friends, include, "Why do you think people say that'the best things in life are free'?" Discussion Cards also provide an easy-to-digest summary of content and offer up ideas for real-world family activities. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
Robots diagnose concussions
Tackle football comes with risks like broken arms and strained muscles, but head-on collisions put football players in even more serious danger. Since concussions can be difficult to diagnose, players are sometimes allowed to carry on even though they should be off the field. And untreated head injuries have lasting consequences. To that end, some schools keep doctors on the sidelines to diagnose head injuries. But many schools don't have full-time athletic trainers and the nearest doctor is sometimes far from the football-loving schools in rural America.
Vodafone to use artificial intelligence to speed up online queries
Vodafone UK has launched TOBi – the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot – as an innovative way of offering our customers a quicker web chat service. TOBi, a virtual customer services' agent, can handle a range of customer queries including device troubleshooting, usage and order tracking amongst many others. Recent research shows that 55% of UK consumers say that the most important factor in the ideal customer experience is getting a prompt and effective response to queries[1], highlighting the need for companies to provide faster and more integrated customer service responses. With 75% of all consumers aged 18-25 already using instant messenger everyday [2], TOBi is our answer to providing customers with the quick and easy web chat service they want. TOBi is already available to some customers through our online web chat service. Later this month messaging will also be available through the My Vodafone app, so customers will be able to speak to advisors whenever they want and while they are on the go.

Machine Learning in R for beginners
Machine learning is a branch in computer science that studies the design of algorithms that can learn. Typical machine learning tasks are concept learning, function learning or "predictive modeling", clustering and finding predictive patterns. These tasks are learned through available data that were observed through experiences or instructions, for example. Machine learning hopes that including the experience into its tasks will eventually improve the learning. The ultimate goal is to improve the learning in such a way that it becomes automatic, so that humans like ourselves don't need to interfere any more. This small tutorial is meant to introduce you to the basics of machine learning in R: more specifically, it will show you how to use R to work with the well-known machine learning algorithm called "KNN" or k-nearest neighbors. Additionally, this tutorial also covers how to use caret do to machine learning in R. The KNN or k-nearest neighbors algorithm is one of the simplest machine learning algorithms and is an example of instance-based learning, where new data are classified based on stored, labeled instances.

Researchers discover pupil dilation patterns synch up
A new study has found that patterns of pupil dilation can reveal when two minds'connect.' Using eye-tracking technology, researchers have found collective pupillary synchrony between speakers and listeners were greatest during emotional peaks of a narrative – and decreased as the story became less engaging. The results of the experiments have suggested that speakers who are highly expressive are more likely to evoke pupillary synchrony - allowing them to keep their audiences's attention. Pupil dilation can occur during many different settings. When you enter a dark cinema, your pupils will automatically dilate to let more light in.
