Quantum Computer Duel: Trapped Ion And Superconducting Devices Go Head-To-Head
Scientists and engineers attempting to build a scalable and efficient quantum computer normally go about it in one of the two ways -- by trapping ions in magnetic fields, or by using superconducting circuits. In either case, the systems created utilize "qubits," which are quantum computing equivalent of electronic computing bits bits, existing in a state of superposition. The question that is often asked is this -- which architecture, trapped ions or a superconducting device, leads to the creation of faster and more reliable quantum computers? A team of researchers has, in a new study, attempted to answer the question. "If you want to buy a quantum computer, you'll need to know which one is best for your application. You'll need to test them in some way, and this is the first of this kind of comparison," Norbert Linke, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland's Joint Quantum Institute (JQI), said in a statement released Thursday.

Artificial Intelligence Is Learning to Be Racist
One thing that's certain in our increasingly automated future is that artificial intelligence will play a increasingly central role in our lives. But while we think of these machines as robotic and logical, they can actually acquire cultural biases around race and gender. Researchers from the University of Washington found that a machine learning tool called "word embedding" can absorb biases hidden in language patterns. This tool helps computers make sense of language, and is used in web search and language translation, using a statistical approach to build up a mathematical representation of language and the meaning of words. The study, published in the journal Science, involved the machine pairing word concepts together.

Stroke patients use artificial intelligence to ensure full therapeutic benefit
Results from a randomized controlled trial published this week in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke demonstrate that stroke survivors were twice as likely to take anti-blood clot treatment (anticoagulants) when using an artificial intelligence (AI) platform than patients receiving treatment as usual. The AI platform (AiCure, New York, NY) uses software algorithms on smartphones to automatically confirm patient identity, the medication, and medication ingestion. In addition, patients receive automated reminders and precise dosing instructions. Real-time data were available for review by health care workers. Early detection of nonadherence allowed for immediate follow up and ensured patients stayed on track in the intervention group.
How Companies Are Already Using AI
Every few months it seems another study warns that a big slice of the workforce is about to lose their jobs because of artificial intelligence. Four years ago, an Oxford University study predicted 47% of jobs could be automated by 2033. Even the near-term outlook has been quite negative: A 2016 report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said 9% of jobs in the 21 countries that make up its membership could be automated. And in January 2017, McKinsey's research arm estimated AI-driven job losses at 5%. My own firm released a survey recently of 835 large companies (with an average revenue of $20 billion) that predicts a net job loss of between 4% and 7% in key business functions by the year 2020 due to AI. Yet our research also found that, in the shorter term, these fears may be overblown.

Consumers Have Mixed Feeling About AIs Potential for Customer Service
Consumers aren't convinced that AI can provide the same, or better level of customer service that a human can provide today, according to a Pegasystems survey. In fact, more adults surveyed across the globe disagree (38%) than agree (27%) that AI can match human customer service. However, there's a bit more optimism about the future, as more agree (38%) than disagree (26%) that AI has the potential to improve service in the future. Even so, more than one-third are unsure, suggesting that there's some apathy towards the subject. The results of the survey show that more people prefer to talk to a live representative on the phone (45%) than any other method of contact for customer service.
