Researchers working toward indoor location detection
HOUSTON -- (April 17) -- Rice University computer scientists are mapping a new solution for interior navigational location detection by linking it to existing sensors in mobile devices. Their results were presented in a paper at last month's 2017 Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE) Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland. Rice University researchers (from left) Chen Luo, Anshumali Shrivastava and Juan Jose Gonzalez Espana published a paper on location detection for navigation with Krishna Palem (not pictured). Six months ago, the same researchers published a paper on their first technology for a new indoor mobile positioning system called CaPSuLe. The navigational location detection system began as a solution for mobile device users inside large indoor spaces like office complexes or shopping malls where GPS navigation falters under poor signals that quickly deplete battery life.
AI Investments Surge
Investors flocked to artificial intelligence startups during the first three months of 2017, with quarterly venture funding again topping $500 million, according to a venture capital tracking report. PricewaterhouseCoopers and CB Insights reported more than 1,100 deals during the first quarter, with venture investments totaling $13.9 billion. Those totals represent a "slight recovery" from the fourth quarter of last year, with total investment dollars rising 15 percent on a quarterly basis. The market trackers said the first quarter results show that "investment continues at a moderated pace" after venture funding in areas like big data began to slow last year. CB Insights' CEO Anand Sanwal noted that the previous year "was irrationally exuberant and the 2016 pullback was a reaction to that. However, 2016 was more of a soft landing than a wholesale popping of the venture bubble [that] pundits have been predicting since 2009."

Notably, this includes the mean and standard deviations of the RMSE scores from each population of results. The mean gives an idea of the average expected performance of a configuration, whereas the standard deviation gives an idea of the variance. The min and max RMSE scores also give an idea of the range of possible best and worst case examples that might be expected. Looking at just the mean RMSE scores, the results suggest that an epoch configured to 1000 may be better. The results also suggest further investigations may be warranted of epoch values between 1000 and 2000.
