The researchers say the algorithm is 90% accurate in distinguishing sharks from dolphins, rays, whales, and other marine life. They note the algorithm's accuracy is a significant improvement over human spotters using their naked eye from helicopters in flight, which are 18% accurate, or those spotting from fixed-wing aircraft, which are 12% accurate. They developed the app by flying drones over coastal waters and capturing about 8,000 images.

If you put an AI in charge of your house -- letting it control the lights, the alarms, the temperature, and so on -- how would you want it to act? Should it be "autonomous and challenging" or "obedient and assisting"? Would you prefer if it sounded male, female, or if it was gender neutral? These are just some of the questions Ikea is asking its customers in a new survey titled "Do you speak human?" The questionnaire was launched late last month by SPACE10, Ikea's "future-living lab," which is tasked with exploring how our houses will look and feel in the decades to come.

Twitter's (TWTR) investment in computers that function like a human brain is paying off, in more ways than one. Aside from helping to draw people back to the social media website, the company's growing status in artificial intelligence (AI) is also attracting attention from high profile investors. In an interview with CNBC's Squawk Alley, billionaire businessman Mark Cuban confirmed that he has recently been buying Twitter stock, as well as shares in other big names that work in AI, deep learning and machine learning, such as Amazon (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX). In the interview, which sent the company's embattled shares up 4 per cent, Cuban claimed that firms specializing in AI are likely to experience better productivity and higher revenues off a smaller workforce, which should subsequently boost earnings. Cuban's encouraging comments came after the social media giant credited better than expected quarterly earnings to machine learning techniques.


147 teams will compete for $5 million in the IBM Watson AI XPrize

The XPrize program is no stranger to moon shots. From capturing carbon to cleaning water -- even literal trips to the moon and Star Trek-style tricorders -- the contest seeks the boldest solutions to humanity's greatest challenges. That tradition continues in the company's latest competition, the IBM Watson AI XPrize, in which 147 teams from 22 countries will compete for a $5 million purse over the next four years. The AI competition will be the first such XPrize that is "open" in that teams will be free to solve any issue they want. There will be a number of "domains" (read: themes) that they can choose from including Health and Wellness, Civil Society, Space and Exploration or Energy and Resources, but so long as the competitors solve their problems using AI, their projects can straddle any or all of these domains.

Twitter shares up 4% after billionaire investor Cuban buys shares as AI play

The remarks by Cuban came six days after Twitter reported better-than-expected first-quarter earnings. The social media company has used algorithms to combat user harassment, vowing to prevent abusive behavior and block repeat offenders from the site. They've also used machine learning to tailor ads and tweets to users. Twitter said in its first-quarter earnings release, it "continued to use other machine learning techniques to improve the relevance of notifications, which increased engagement and brought people back to Twitter." In March, Chief Executive Jack Dorsey said the impact of AI on society would be "positive," but he appeared unsure if the U.S. government is ready to deal with the impact.


A Conversation with the Getty's New Imaging and Digital Media Architect
