A Free Course on Machine Learning & Data Science from Caltech

#artificialintelligence

Right now, Machine Learning and Data Science are two hot topics, the subject of many courses being offered at universities today. Above, you can watch a playlist of 18 lectures from a course called Learning From Data: A Machine Learning Course, taught by Caltech's Feynman Prize-winning professor Yaser Abu-Mostafa. This is an introductory course in machine learning (ML) that covers the basic theory, algorithms, and applications. ML is a key technology in Big Data, and in many financial, medical, commercial, and scientific applications. It enables computational systems to adaptively improve their performance with experience accumulated from the observed data.

Apple Watch detects heart problem known to cause strokes

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The Apple Watch has been found to detect a heart condition that affects some 2.7 million people in the US, a new study has revealed. By pairing the smartwatch's heart rate sensors with artificial intelligence, researchers developed an algorithm capable of distinguishing an irregular heartbeat, known as atrial fibrillation, from a normal heart rhythm - and with 97 percent accuracy. Atrial fibrillation, although easily treatable, has been difficult to diagnose and the team believes their work could pave the way for new methods to identify the abnormality. The algorithm was accurate 97 percent of the time using the smartwatch's heart rate sensor (stock) University of California, San Francisco, in collaboration with the app Cardiogram, trained a deep neural network with heart readings from 6,158 Cardiogram users.

Neural Networks for Machine Learning Coursera

#artificialintelligence

About this course: Learn about artificial neural networks and how they're being used for machine learning, as applied to speech and object recognition, image segmentation, modeling language and human motion, etc. We'll emphasize both the basic algorithms and the practical tricks needed to get them to work well. This course contains the same content presented on Coursera beginning in 2013. It is not a continuation or update of the original course. It has been adapted for the new platform. Please be advised that the course is suited for an intermediate level learner - comfortable with calculus and with experience programming (Python).

NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) Stock Tear Continues, Riding On Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) stock surged on Wednesday in the wake of the company's earnings report on Tuesday evening, but it climbed even more on Thursday after the analyst day. It's really no surprise to anyone that artificial intelligence and deep learning were two key highlights of the chip maker's analyst day. Macquarie Research analyst Srini Pajjuri said in a note to investors that NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) management estimates the total addressable market at $11 billion for "training" and $15 billion for "inference." The company's new Volta datacenter product focuses on "inferencing," the segment of the market that the analyst expects to be the more competitive of the two. It also announced a new self-driving partnership with Toyota, which builds on its other self-driving agreements with Tesla, Volvo and Audi.

Arccos to Introduce Golf's First Artificial Intelligence Platform, Arccos Caddie, Powered by Microsoft Azure

#artificialintelligence

"Every shot in golf involves a decision-making process, and the caddie's role has historically been to help you make more intelligent choices. Today, however, less than 3 percent of players have access to a caddie," said Sal Syed, CEO and Co-Founder of Arccos. "Everyone else is missing out on a crucial source of information that can help inform every shot. Arccos named Microsoft as its Official Cloud Partner in January 2017. Together, they are dedicated to creating artificial intelligence technologies that will move the connected golf category forward, taking it mainstream; this starts with Arccos Caddie.

An EV Battery That Charges Fully In 5 Minutes Could Become Commercial In 3 Years

International Business Times

Electric vehicles now comprise a substantial part of the automotive market. But the fact remains that despite the increasing number of charging stations, it is still inconvenient to charge a car in comparison to getting a tank full of gas. StoreDot, an Israeli startup, might have the solution to the woes of electric vehicle (EV) owners, with a new battery it claims can fully charge in five minutes and drive the EV 300 miles on a single charge. "Fast Charging is the critical missing link needed to make electric vehicles ubiquitous. The currently available battery technology dictates long charging times, which makes the EV form of transportation inadequate for the public at large. We're exploring options with a few strategic partners in the auto space to help us boost the production process in Asia and reach mass production as soon as possible," Doron Myersdorf, co-founder and CEO of StoreDot, said in the official press release Thursday.

MICCAI 2017 Tutorial - DL for MI

#artificialintelligence

Deep learning is the field of machine learning that studies and develops artificial neural networks capable of learning several layers of representation (features) from raw data. These methods have delivered new levels of performance in the field of computer vision. More recently, they have become popular in medical imaging systems, such as for the segmentation of various types of tissues in medical imagery. In this tutorial, we will provide an introduction to deep learning, covering both theory and practice. On the theory side, we will describe the most common concepts found in today's deep learning research, with a focus on convolutional neural networks.

Can the human brain on LSD take on AI?

Daily Mail - Science & tech

LSD advocates have long claimed that taking psychedelic drugs lead users to a fabled'higher state of consciousness.' Now, researchers are hoping to put this theory to the test, by pitting the human brain on LSD against an AI computer in a game of Go. If the controversial study goes ahead, participants will have their brains scanned while playing the game, in the hopes of learning how the substance changes brain connectivity to enhance creativity and problem solving. LSD advocates have long claimed that taking psychedelic drugs lead users to a fabled'higher state of consciousness.' Pictured is the molecular structure of LSD Due to strict regulations, the only evidence of the benefits of microdosing LSD bas been based on self-reports. Ms Feilding wants to change that, by leading the first ever scientific trial into LSD microdosing. She plans to give 20 participants low doses of LSD or a placebo, and scanning their brains while they perform a range of cognitive tasks, including the Wisconsin Card Sorting test, and a game of GO against an AI computer.

Growing healthy resilient biological tissues on humanoid robots

Robohub

Musculoskeletal robots may one day assist the growth of replacement tissue grafts for transplant patients. Researchers at the University of Oxford are beginning to investigate a potentially groundbreaking method for replacing damaged musculoskeletal tissues (such as muscle, tendons and ligaments), which remain unmet needs in regenerative medicine. The proposed approach, which involves growing tissue grafts directly on humanoid musculoskeletal robots, could result in healthier, stronger tissue prior to transplantation on a patient. Tissue engineering aims to produce biological tissue in vitro by a combination of cells, scaffolds, or matrices to support new tissue growth and bioreactors. Bioreactors are growth chambers where tissue constructs are grown and provide some form of mechanical stimulation.
