Kaggle's annual March Machine Learning Mania competition drew 442 teams to predict the outcomes of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball tournament. In this winner's interview, Kaggler describes how he came in 5th place by stepping back from solution mode and taking the time to plan out his approach to the the project methodically. I have been working in credit risk model development in the banking industry for approximately 10 years. I have been lucky to receive exposure to big data and data science through previous roles but decided I wanted to teach myself R and to improve my machine learning knowledge. The best opportunity seemed to be to utilise Kaggle datasets where I could to help with this.
People with 'smart genes' are more likely to have autism
Researchers have found a surprising connection between intelligence and autism. Yesterday, scientists announced the discovery of 40 new genes linked to human intelligence, and found that many people with the genes were also on the autistic spectrum. The findings could one day help shed light on the condition's origins. Autism, more properly known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) โ includes Asperger's syndrome. It has long been known that some sufferers have superior abilities in areas such as mathematics and science.
You'll soon be able to control IKEA's affordable smart lights with Assistant, Alexa, and Siri
We've been hearing a lot about how Google Home and Amazon Echo can control our smart appliances and devices, but for many of us, they're still out of reach. Spending a couple hundred dollars on smart light bulbs or thousands on a new oven aren't exactly impulse buys, especially if we're just buying them to try out voice control. Thanks to IKEA, just about anyone can install smart lighting in their homes and manage them with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Siri. The Swedish furniture company announced in a press release that you will soon be able to control its affordable line of smart lights with the smart speakers and assistants you already have. IKEA's bulbs offer a no-frills approach to smart lighting.

It easier than ever before to train a neural network. However, it is rarely the case that you can just take code from a tutorial and directly make it work for your application. Interestingly, many of the most important tweaks are barely discussed in the academic literature but at the same time critical to make your product work. Therefore I thought it would be helpful for other people who plan to use deep learning in their business to understand some of these tweaks and tricks. This post is based on my talk I gave on May 10 at the Berlin.AI meetup (the slides are here).
Less sophisticated 'bots' help human groups
"Much of the current conversation about artificial intelligence has to do with whether AI is a substitute for human beings. We believe the conversation should be about AI as a complement to human beings," said Nicholas Christakis, co-director of the Yale Institute for Network Science (YINS) and senior author of the study. Christakis is a professor of sociology, ecology & evolutionary biology, biomedical engineering, and medicine at Yale. The study adds to a growing body of Yale research into the complex dynamics of human social networks and how those networks influence everything from economic inequality to group violence. In this case, Christakis and first author Hirokazu Shirado conducted an experiment involving an online game that required groups of people to coordinate their actions for a collective goal.
Microsoft creates mysterious new version of Windows 10 for Chinese government
Microsoft has built a new version of Windows 10 specifically for the Chinese government. The company announced the new version of the operating system at an event in Shanghai, but hasn't shared many specific details about how the software has been modified. Microsoft has been known to be working on a Chinese government edition of Windows 10 for some time. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Genomics reboots deep learning
A'new deep learning' method, DeepCpG, designed by researchers at EMBL-EBI, the Babraham Institute and the Sanger Institute helps scientists better understand the epigenome โ the biochemical activity around the genome. Published in Genome Biology, DeepCpG leverages'deep neural networks', a multi-layered machine learning model inspired by the brain. Machine learning provides a valuable tool for research into health and disease. Deep learning is one of the most active fields in machine learning, which has led to recent advancements in computer image classification, text translation and speech recognition. But deep learning also has major potential in computational biology, particularly for regulatory genomics and cellular imaging. "We now have this amazing'book' of the human genome, thanks to projects like 1000 Genomes, divided up nicely into chapters and annotated in parts.
GE and its healthcare partners want to bring AI to patient care
GE Healthcare and the corporate parent of two of Harvard University's teaching hospitals will spend the next ten years working on ways to bring artificial intelligence (AI) to every aspect of a hospital visit, the companies announced today. The Center for Clinical Data Science will include teams from both companies and will develop, test and deploy AI software at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital, the Boston Globe reported. GE, which moved its corporate headquarters to Boston last year, is working to transform itself from an industrial company to one that develops software that powers equipment from MRI machines to jet engines, among other innovations, the article noted. AI -- sometimes called deep learning technology -- refers to computers that can sift through vast amounts of data and learn to become more accurate and efficient over time. Executives from GE, one of the nation's largest corporations, and Partners Healthcare (which owns MGH and Brigham and Women's Hospital), said integrating the technology into healthcare could help patients receive better care.
3 Big Questions About AI-Guided Medicine
Last month, I discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) and "deep learning" algorithms could have a profound impact on the practice of medicine. This month, I'd like to cover three questions that patients, doctors, and policymakers might wish to ask as we approach the era of AI-guided health care. One of the potential promises of AI in medicine is the ability to comb through thousands (or millions) of patient records to detect clinically significant patterns not yet discovered by human researchers. A UK study showed AIs could more reliably predict who might be at risk for future heart attacks and strokes than models based on the best human guidelines from the American Heart Association. The AI project "Deep Patient" showed similar promise in predicting who might develop "severe diabetes, schizophrenia, and various cancers."
