The same day that news was anounced, the iconic fast-food chain's shares hit an all-time high and analysts upgraded the stock. "Dramatic increases in labor costs have a significant effect on the restaurant industry, where profit margins are pennies on the dollar and labor makes up about a third of total expenses," says Andy Puzder, a former restaurant chain CEO, in the report. "As a result, restaurants are looking to reduce costs while maintaining service and food quality." However, the report does also outline how AI and automation can function alongside existing workers to improve results and free up human workers for higher-level functions.

According to a new report by consultancy firm Accenture, corporate profitability is in decline across most industries in the United States – and is also impacting investment and output in public services. After reaching their highest share of national income in the post-war era, the growth of profits dropped from 25 percent in 2010 to -3 percent in 2015, the report states. It is not a rosy picture for the future if things carry on as they are. Indeed, the current data do not suggest an environment conducive to growth. Business investment is already close to stalling. For instance, in manufacturing business investment growth has declined from 14.8 percent in 2012 to -5.2 percent in 2016 in the United States and from 5.9 percent in 2012 to -6.6 percent in 2016 in the United Kingdom .

Alphabet and Avis Budget will work together on self-driving cars, the companies announced on Monday. Alphabet's self-driving car company, Waymo, will rely on Avis to service and store its fleet of Chrysler self-driving vans, the companies said in a statement. Most of the 600 vehicles will be deployed, in part to support a pilot in Phoenix, Arizona. Shares of Avis bounced more than 18 percent immediately after the news, and were up more than 12.5 percent mid-morning. Avis competitor Hertz also saw shares spike more than 7 percent.

Karanam and Yasamin Mostofi/ACM) Researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara have demonstrated the first three-dimensional imaging of objects through walls using an ordinary wireless signal. Applications could include emergency search-and-rescue, archaeological discovery, and structural monitoring, according to the researchers. Other applications could include military and law-enforcement surveillance. In the research, two octo-copters (drones) took off and flew outside an enclosed, four-sided brick structure whose interior was unknown to the drones. One drone continuously transmitted a WiFi signal; the other drone (located on a different side of the structure) received that signal and transmitted the changes in received signal strength ("RSSI") during the flight to a computer, which then calculated 3D high-resolution images of the objects inside (which do not need to move). Interestingly, the equipment is all commercially available: two drones with "yagi" antenna, WiFi router, Tango tablet (for real-time localization), and Raspberry Pi computer with network interface to record measurements.

Former Google car project Waymo has signed a deal with Avis Budget Group to service and house a fleet of self-driving vehicles being tested in Phoenix, giving the rental car agency a foothold in the budding market for autonomous transportation. The agreement accelerates Google parent Alphabet Inc.-owned Waymo's effort to commercialize its self-driving car technology, which is beginning a real-world pilot program after years of tests. Avis Budget said Monday that it would provide "fleet support and maintenance services" to the Waymo vehicles in Phoenix. Waymo is providing free rides to passengers in a fleet of Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid minivans outfitted with Waymo's myriad autonomous car sensors.

The world's most powerful quantum computer processor could be created by Google, if research underway at the firm pays off. The company is currently testing a quantum processor more than twice as powerful as its previously announced chip, and claims it will be ready by the end of 2017. If successful, the processor could lead to computers capable of solving scientific mysteries that would take ordinary computers billions of years to compute. Google claims it will have a working quantum chip, powerful enough to out perform conventional computers, by the end of 2017. The heart of modern computing is binary code, which has served computers for decades.
