Twitter could roll out 'fake news' button on tweets
Twitter is exploring the idea of building a fake news button, a new report says. The feature is currently said to be in "a prototype phase", but could roll out in the future as a convenient way for users to stop the spread of false stories. How it would work isn't yet clear, but anonymous sources familiar with the plans say a fake news button could sit next to individual tweets. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Artificial intelligence to generate new cancer drugs on demand

Thursday, 22nd of December Baltimore, MD - Scientists at the Pharmaceutical Artificial Intelligence (pharma.AI) group of Insilico Medicine, Inc, today announced the publication of a seminal paper demonstrating the application of generative adversarial autoencoders (AAEs) to generating new molecular fingerprints on demand. The study was published in Oncotarget on 22nd of December, 2016. The study represents the proof of concept for applying Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to drug discovery. The authors significantly extended this model to generate new leads according to multiple requested characteristics and plan to launch a comprehensive GAN-based drug discovery engine producing promising therapeutic treatments to significantly accelerate pharmaceutical R&D and improve the success rates in clinical trials.
The Robot Academy: Lessons in inverse kinematics and robot motion
The Robot Academy is a new learning resource from Professor Peter Corke and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), the team behind the award-winning Introduction to Robotics and Robotic Vision courses. There are over 200 lessons available, all for free. The lessons were created in 2015 for the Introduction to Robotics and Robotic Vision courses. We describe our approach to creating the original courses in the article, An Innovative Educational Change: Massive Open Online Courses in Robotics and Robotic Vision. The courses were designed for university undergraduate students but many lessons are suitable for anybody, as you can easily see the difficulty rating for each lesson.

Adobe releases analytics tools for conversational AI
It's still hard to say if the voice-controlled aluminum can will be the next smartphone or the next Segway, but either way, brands are preparing. This morning Adobe launched a new set of analytics tools, Adobe Sensei for Voice, to help brands take advantage of conversational data to improve targeting and, ideally, conversions. Adobe says it can consume data from Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana and Bixby (lol one day). The company captures both user intent and contextual data -- context that can be put to use by brands when targeting customers across other channels like social and email. This means Adobe can track the actions users most often take with their conversational AI of choice and the things they regularly interact with -- think calling an Uber versus listening to the latest Portugal. In practice, developers and brands will have access to the frequency of user interactions and the sequential actions taken after engaging with a particular service.
Foreign IT workers seen as solution to industry shortage
There is a rising demand for IT engineers in Japan as many point out there is a shortage of such professionals domestically. An estimate shows that Japan will face a shortage of close to 600,000 IT-related professionals by 2030. As companies are moving to recruit workers from overseas, skilled IT engineers, especially from Asia, are increasingly garnering attention. Such a trend seems to be in line with the government's policy to further increase the number of foreign workers with technical skills. What are some of the issues Japanese firms need to address when expanding the hiring of foreign workers? Staffing agencies reportedly plan to shore up their efforts to recruit IT workers from Asian countries. Meanwhile, a program called Project Indian Institutes of Technology (PIITs), which involves IT-powerhouse India, invites students from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) to intern at Japanese firms. The Japan Times organized a forum on June 13, titled "IT human resources sought overseas by Japanese companies: an example of an internship program by IIT students," to enhance the discussion regarding the IT engineer situation in Japan. Japanese companies accepting IIT students as interns and Indian students taking part in the program were invited to discuss their thoughts. The participants of this forum were Hiroshi Hirabayashi, president and representative director of the Japan-India Association; Shigeo Mizuno, director and corporate vice president of Fujifilm Software Co.; Koji Iwamoto, deputy manager of the general planning department at Tonichi Printing Co.; and Toyoaki Machida, Japan general manager of the global section at Webstaff Co. Additionally, Himanshu Tolani, a third-year undergraduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar; Shubham Jain, a third-year undergraduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur; and Yash Ubale, a third-year undergraduate student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, participated. As a child, Kay Tye was immersed in a life of science. "I grew up in my mom's lab," she says. At the age of five or six, she earned 25 cents a box for "restocking" bulk-ordered pipette tips into boxes for sterilization as her mother, an acclaimed biochemist at Cornell University, probed the genetics of yeast. Today, Tye runs her own neuroscience lab at MIT. Under large black lights reminiscent of a fashion shoot, she and her team at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory can observe how mice behave when particular brain circuits are turned on or off.
Mind Reading: Using Artificial Neural Nets to Predict Viewed Image Categories From EEG Readings - Silicon Valley Data Science
How can artificial neural nets help in understanding our brain's neural net? On the weekend of March 24–26, YCombinator-backed startup DeepGram hosted a deep learning hackathon. The weekend-long event included speakers and judges from Google Brain, NVIDIA, and Baidu. My colleague, Dr. Matt Rubashkin, also participated and you can read about his project here. I chose to work on one of the datasets suggested by DeepGram: EEG readings from a Stanford research project that predicted which category of images their test subjects were viewing using linear discriminant analysis.
Study finds hackers could use brainwaves to steal passwords
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggest that brainwave-sensing headsets, also known as EEG or electroencephalograph headsets, need better security after a study reveals hackers could guess a user's passwords by monitoring their brainwaves. EEG headsets are advertised as allowing users to use only their brains to control robotic toys and video games specifically developed to be played with an EEG headset. There are only a handful on the market, and they range in price from $150 to $800. Nitesh Saxena, Ph.D., associate professor in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences Department of Computer and Information Sciences, and Ph.D. student Ajaya Neupane and former master's student Md Lutfor Rahman, found that a person who paused a video game and logged into a bank account while wearing an EEG headset was at risk for having their passwords or other sensitive data stolen by a malicious software program. "These emerging devices open immense opportunities for everyday users," Saxena said.
