Grey squirrels remember how to solve puzzles for two years
If you have ever hung a bird feeder in your garden only to find it emptied by a squirrel minutes later, you'll already know the pesky rodents are smart. Now scientists have shown that squirrels can remember problem-solving techniques for long periods and can apply them to new situations. Research found grey squirrels quickly remember how to solve a problem they have not seen for almost two years, and also quickly work out how to use those skills in a redesigned version of the same test. Animal intelligence is generally judged by how well a creature can adapt to its environment and make use of resources around them. Squirrels have shown they can live almost anywhere, by spreading from North America to other regions, including the UK where they have all but replaced the native red squirrel.
The MachineLabs Blog Our road ahead to private beta
It's been eight weeks since we announced our upcoming service MachineLabs to the world. We've opened the gates to apply for the private beta which is just around the corner. Today we would like to reflect on our recent progress and the road ahead. We are super happy to unveil that we just founded MachineLabs, Inc. After we've implemented a first prototype of MachineLabs, we knew we are onto something and decided pretty quickly after that, to bootstrap a new company as soon as possible. Here's our brand new company logo, carefully crafted with 3 by Judith Kutscheid.
How to Remove Trends and Seasonality with a Difference Transform in Python - Machine Learning Mastery
Time series datasets may contain trends and seasonality, which may need to be removed prior to modeling. Trends can result in a varying mean over time, whereas seasonality can result in a changing variance over time, both which define a time series as being non-stationary. Stationary datasets are those that have a stable mean and variance, and are in turn much easier to model. Differencing is a popular and widely used data transform for making time series data stationary. In this tutorial, you will discover how to apply the difference operation to your time series data with Python.
Global Bigdata Conference
These and other findings are from the McKinsey Global Institute Study, and discussion paper, Artificial Intelligence, The Next Digital Frontier (80 pp., PDF, free, no opt-in) published last month. McKinsey Global Institute published an article summarizing the findings titled How Artificial Intelligence Can Deliver Real Value To Companies. McKinsey interviewed more than 3,000 senior executives on the use of AI technologies, their companies' prospects for further deployment, and AI's impact on markets, governments, and individuals. McKinsey Analytics was also utilized in the development of this study and discussion paper.
Google acquires Bangalore-based AI firm Halli Labs - ETtech
American technology giant Google has acquired Bangalore-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm Halli Labs for an undisclosed sum. The firm which was co-founded by former chief technology officer of now defunct Stayzilla, Pankaj Gupta, announced the acquisition in a blogpost on Tuesday. The firm becomes the latest AI start up to be snapped by a technology giant after a spate of similar acquisitions by firms such as Microsoft, Facebook, Apple among others. "Halli Labs was founded with the goal of applying modern AI and ML (Machine Learning) techniques to old problems and domains?--?in order to help technology enable people to do whatever it is that they want to do, easier and better. Well, what better place than Google to help us achieve this goal," the company said in a blog.
Google acquires Halli Labs, a 4-month old Bengaluru AI start-up
New Delhi: Google Inc. has acquired Halli Labs, a four-month old start-up out of Bengaluru that is developing artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions. Halli Labs announced the acquisition late Wednesday. "We will be joining Google's Next Billion Users team to help get more technology and information into more people's hands around the world," the company said in blog post on Medium.com. According to a bio-note, also on Medium, Halli Labs is engaged in developing solutions to traditional problems using AI, MI, deep learning and natural language processing technologies. "Halli Labs is applying modern ML techniques to old problems and domains to help technology march on in its timeless purpose-- that of giving superhuman powers to all of us humans in letting us do whatever we want to do, better," the post read.

A team of researchers is working to build trust between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) by creating an "interpreter" that can explain how an AI arrived at the answer to a specific... AI has reputation as a threat to our working lives, but it might not be as bad as we think. Research shows that 230,000 jobs in the business sector could disappear by 2025, filled by "artificial intelligence agents". It's widely accepted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have a huge impact on our lives in the coming decades - but what's its value to the global economy? Whether it's renewable energy investment, supercomputers, building megacities or mobile technology, China is spreading its wings and taking flight.
NEWS: ROSS Intelligence Partners with Sedgwick LLP โ ROSS' #LegalTech Corner

Sedgwick will bringing the power of ROSS Intelligence's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to its Creditors' Rights and Bankruptcy group. "We are excited to be on the cutting edge of new technology to provide superior and more efficient service to our clients," said Mike Healy, Sedgwick Chair of the Firm. "Our firm's Creditors' Rights and Bankruptcy Practice is already using AI to enhance our legal research, making it faster to analyze complex legal issues and to discover relevant'connect-the-dots' information that otherwise might go unnoticed. This technology will allow us to best represent, protect and advance the interests of our clients."
Prediction and Control with Temporal Segment Models
Mishra, Nikhil, Abbeel, Pieter, Mordatch, Igor
We introduce a method for learning the dynamics of complex nonlinear systems based on deep generative models over temporal segments of states and actions. Unlike dynamics models that operate over individual discrete timesteps, we learn the distribution over future state trajectories conditioned on past state, past action, and planned future action trajectories, as well as a latent prior over action trajectories. Our approach is based on convolutional autoregressive models and variational autoencoders. It makes stable and accurate predictions over long horizons for complex, stochastic systems, effectively expressing uncertainty and modeling the effects of collisions, sensory noise, and action delays. The learned dynamics model and action prior can be used for end-to-end, fully differentiable trajectory optimization and model-based policy optimization, which we use to evaluate the performance and sample-efficiency of our method.
