LG To Boost Smart Home Business By Acquiring AI Technologies

LG Electronics is planning to go all-out in acquiring AI technologies in an attempt to boost its smart home business. At IFA 2017, the South Korean electronics company disclosed what it intends to do by 2020. Over the weekend, LG's home appliance and air solutions division head Song Dae-hyun spoke at a press conference at a hotel in Berlin about the tech company's move to expand its smart home business. According to Song, LG wants to boost this aspect of its company by doubling its investment in mergers and acquisitions of artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technologies, Korea Herald has learned. "As for the AI business, inorganic growth would be more effective. LG officially seeks to acquire some AI companies. But so far, many acquisition projects fell apart due to market conditions," Song said before noting that Samsung's neighboring rival "is aggressively looking for a good AI company."

The Tesla and SpaceX founder suggests that a war is likely to be started by one of the AIs itself, rather than a country leader. Governments must have a better understanding of artificial intelligence technology's rapid evolution in order to fully comprehend the risks, he said.

This is significant because while the traditional method weeks or a month just to analyze one lens using computer simulations and mathematical models, the same can be done by AI in less than half a second. The SLAC study isn't the first time researchers have turned to AI to study gravitational lensing. Previous works included having a neural network identify if an image showed gravitational lensing or not.


Eyes for AI? China's computer vision tech firms have the answer

Strong interim results posted by Chinese smartphone camera makers may have proven yet again the future of camera manufacturing lies with lenses that are minuscule and A.I.-savvy. The landscape of the camera making industry has fundamentally changed as consumers are shelving their professional cameras and using smartphones to take pictures in recent years. Now as computer vision technology, which uses deep learning scheme to enable machines to understand digital images and videos, matures, smartphone camera makers, many of which are leading the pack in computer vision software development, could displace traditional camera makers' dominance in their own backyard. Companies such as Q Technology, Sunny Optical exemplified the rapid growth of smartphone camera makers in China. Both companies have posted strong first-half results this year, as traditional camera makers such as Canon see a decline in unit sales in digital compact cameras.


GDPR Readiness: Security Pros Counting on AI, Machine Learning for Data Protection

A recent Imperva survey of 310 IT security professionals found that 55 percent of respondents are counting on artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning solutions to bear some of their data protection workload over the next three to five years, and 27 percent said they're expecting the same within the next year or two. The survey also found that 22 percent of respondents haven't yet hired a Data Protection Officer (DPO), a key requirement of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for any organization processing personal data on a large scale. Of those that haven't hired a DPO, 52 percent aren't planning to hire one until the second half of 2018 or later. The GDPR takes effect on May 25, 2018. When asked whether their company is preparing for GDPR, 16 percent said no, and 5 percent didn't know.


Scientists Use Machine Learning To Spot Alzheimer's Before Onset of Symptoms

Scientists then presented the algorithm with a new set of brain scans, some of which were from patients who currently had mild cognitive impairment. All of the scans, however, were taken before any of the patients had developed the disease. The algorithm was able to predict which patients would end up impaired with an accuracy of 84 percent. "This is an example how big data and open science brings tangible benefits to patient care," said Rosa-Neto to McGill News. The biggest benefit to patient care could be improved clinical trials studying the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer's, the most common form of dementia. "By using this tool, clinical trials could focus only on individuals with a higher likelihood of progressing to dementia within the time frame of the study," said Dr. Serge Gauthier, the study's co-lead author, to McGill News. "This will greatly reduce the cost and the time necessary to conduct these studies." Research was funded by the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.


AI Could Predict Alzheimer's Disease Two Years in Advance

The algorithm -- which accurately predicted probable Alzheimer's disease 84 percent of the time -- could be particularly useful in selecting patients for clinical trials for drugs intended to delay disease onset, said lead study author Sulantha Sanjeewa, a computer scientist at McGill University in Canada. "If you can tell from a group of of individuals who is the one that will develop the disease, one can better test new medications that could be capable of preventing the disease," said co-lead study author Dr. Pedro Rosa-Neto, an associate professor of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry, also at McGill University. The technology is still in its early stages, but the findings suggest that AI analysis of brain scans could offer better results than relying on humans alone, Rosa-Neto told Live Science. The findings are detailed in a new study, which was published online in July in the journal Neurobiology of Aging. Developing drugs that slow the onset of Alzheimer's disease requires that the drugs be tested in clinical trials that run between 18 and 24 months, Rosa-Neto said.
