Schaeffler expands robotics portfolio with Melior Motion acquisition

#artificialintelligence

Melior Motion's planetary gearboxes are used in industrial robots with medium to high payload capacities. Schaeffler Group, an automotive and industrial supplier, signed an agreement to acquire all shares of Melior Motion for an undisclosed amount. With the acquisition of Melior Motion, Schaeffler adds more powerful gearboxes for higher payloads to its portfolio. The acquisition strengthens Schaeffler's robotics portfolio. The company began expanding its robotics presence in 2017 when it brought a strain-wave gearbox for use in a collaborative robot to production.

Argonne scientists use artificial intelligence to improve airplane manufacturing

#artificialintelligence

When it comes to manufacturing new lightweight, yet strong components for new passenger jets, scientists are treating the process like trying to brew the most delicious cup of coffee. By using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory are intelligently and automatically selecting the perfect settings for a different kind of hot brew -- the process of friction stir welding, a common ingredient needed to manufacture airplane components. In a new collaboration with GE Research, Edison Welding Institute and GKN Aerospace, Argonne computer scientists are putting the power of the laboratory's automated machine learning expertise and supercomputers to use. By reducing the number of costly experiments and time-consuming simulations with a new machine learning approach, they can generate accurate models that provide valuable information about the welding process in much less time and at a fraction of the cost. This approach, called DeepHyper, is a scalable automated machine learning package developed by Argonne computational scientist Prasanna Balaprakash and his colleagues at Argonne.

Start of the European AI language model project Open GPT-X

#artificialintelligence

Under the leadership of the Fraunhofer Institutes for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and for Integrated Circuits (IIS), the OpenGPT-X project is starting with the goal of developing a large AI language model for Europe. Particular attention is being paid to data protection as well as European language diversity. "International competitors have already recognized the enormous disruptive potential of AI language technologies for business, industry and society. A European AI language model like OpenGPT-X is therefore imperative to ensure Europe's digital sovereignty and market independence," says Dr. Nicolas Flores-Herr, head of the project at Fraunhofer IAIS. Due to the high technical requirements, such as computing power, such powerful language models can so far only be implemented by large companies or consortia.

Meta Unveils New AI Supercomputer

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

The Morning Download delivers daily insights and news on business technology from the CIO Journal team. Meta, which announced the news in a blog post Monday, said its research team currently is using the supercomputer to train AI models in natural-language processing and computer vision for research. The aim is to boost capabilities to one day train models with more than a trillion parameters on data sets as large as an exabyte, which is roughly equivalent to 36,000 years of high-quality video. "The experiences we're building for the metaverse require enormous compute powerโ€ฆand RSC will enable new AI models that can learn from trillions of examples, understand hundreds of languages, and more," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement provided to The Wall Street Journal. By mid-summer, when the AI Research SuperCluster is fully built, it will house some 16,000 GPUs, becoming the fastest AI supercomputer in the world, Meta said.
