Tesla Is No Longer Alone With 'Full Self Driving' Promises

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

Driverless cars--the kind consumers can actually buy--are inching closer to becoming a reality. The caveat, particularly for Tesla investors, is that this isn't a race any particular vehicle brand is likely to win. Electric vehicles have predictably taken center stage at this week's semi-virtual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but there has been an eye-catching secondary role for autonomous vehicles. In her keynote speech Wednesday, General Motors Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra said her teams are aiming to deliver a consumer-oriented driverless car "as soon as the middle of this decade."

The company used its presentation to outline a "metamobility" strategy where robots augment humanity's capabilities -- to the point where you could even reconfigure whole rooms, or use a robot as a stand-in while you navigate the metaverse at home. Boston Dynamics' robots also played a large part in the event, and Hyundai was keen to discuss everything from exoskeletons through to digital twins for machinery. It's a lot to take in, we know. Thankfully, you can learn about those and more through our six-minute supercut.

Ambarella Announces Breakthrough AI-Based Image Signal Processing

#artificialintelligence

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 05, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ambarella, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMBA), an AI vision silicon company, today announced its new Artificial Intelligence Image Signal Processor (AISP). The company is showcasing this technology at its invitation-only event during CES 2022 in Las Vegas this week, running on its CV2 edge AI perception systems on chip (SoCs). Drawing on its 17 years of experience in ISP processing and best-in-class CVflow AI engine, Ambarella's new AI based ISP architecture uses neural networks to augment the image processing done by the hardware ISP integrated into its SoCs. This approach enables color imaging with low light at very low lux levels and minimal noise, a 10 to 100X improvement over state-of-the-art traditional ISPs, and new levels of high dynamic range (HDR) processing with more natural color reproduction and higher dynamic range. Initially demonstrated on the CV2 SoCs during CES this week, the new AISP will become available across Ambarella's entire CVflow SoC portfolio at resolutions up to 4K.

Sony to set up new EV unit as it considers entering market, CEO says

A 62-Year-Old Paralyzed Man Sent Out His First Tweet With Brain Chip

#artificialintelligence

A 62-year-old Australian man paralyzed following his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has become the first individual to send out a message on social media using a brain-computer interface, RT reported. Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are the next big thing in technology. While some people like Elon Musk want to use it to enhance human experiences as early as next year, others such as Synchron, whose interface helped Australian Philip O'Keefe send out his first tweet, want to develop it as a prosthesis for paralysis and treat other neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease in the future, the company said in a press release. Synchron's BCI works through its brain implant called Stentrode that does not require any brain surgery to be installed. Instead, the company leverages the intentional techniques that are commonly used to treat stroke to implant the Stentrode via the jugular vein, the press release said.
